I just read the post about dry heaving, and now I don't know what to think. I would completely freak out if I were to dry heave, and alot of you can do it and it doesn't bother you at all. I count the last time I dry heaved asbeing sick, but something that I got through by myselfand was proud of it.

Well, as someone who has vomitted probably a lot more recently than most of the people on this board (I think my last time was in April....could be a little sooner or later, I don't care much, so don't keep track of these things), I can attest that dry-heaving is not at all similar to actually vomitting. When I actually vomit, I will get the intense nausea, and about 2 or 3 minutes before it actually occurs, I will know that it is coming.

With dry heaving, although I usually feel some degree of nausea, it is not near as intense, nor do I get the same feeling of "oh my god, I'm going to vomit". For me, it usually occurs when I am really hungry, when I am motionsick (interestingly enough, more often once I have finally set-foot on non-moving land), or when I am cleaning something particularly disgusting. It can be kind of embarrasing, as I usually can't talk when this happens, because there is just waaay too much going on in my stomach and throat to be able to form coherent sound.

If you are proud of your previous experience- then remain proud of it! Everyone deals with things differently, and if the gaggy feeling you get when you dry-heave is related to your fear, then you should be proud of working through a previous experience.

Some people's emet is worse than others'. I started the other post and
I'm alot like you about it. I hate it (definitely not as much as doing
the real thing) and it's scary to me, but it doesn't bother some people
    at all.

Anyhow, you should definitely be proud of yourself for getting through
that! It's an accomplishment for you, so don't let other people's
reactions to the same situation take away from that!

Yea I agree, we are all at different levels with this so what may not bother someone else as much may freak you out horribly, and if you get through what freaks you out okay, then yes I would definately consider that a great accomplishment. Its not a competition or anything, and we all come at this from our own angles and experiences.

I panic a lot when I dry heave. This happened to me 4 weeks ago and I was in such a state that my Mum had to call the doctor so you are not alone. The worst thing was I don't know if it was a bug or pregnancy so for the next 19 weeks I am going to be terrified of it happening again.
Today is the tomorrow I dreaded yesterday and I\'m ok.

I used to get a lot of dry heaving when i started eating the first time back in april for a while, in the end after the dry heaving, i had to make myself v* as i wanted to get rid of it, and it felt so much better!!. I don't always think if you dry heave it means you will v*, i have dry heaved many times before from being hungry or crying to much.

Would gagging and dry heaving be the same thing?

Nope...gagging is more in the throat, whereas dry heaving involved your stomach contracting- it feels kinda like it's trying to jump outta there (for me anyway).

Hey Kristin, that's how I feel about dry heaving. It's pretty much the same as v*, but there's just nothing in your stomach. If there were, then you would v*.

Kelly- You can dry heave without vomitting, even if you have food in your stomach. I have dry-heaved with food in my stomach, and nothing has come up- I have also vomitted on an empty stomach, which is not pleasant in the least. I would have to say that food doesn't play a factor in dry heaving vs vomitting.

I dry heave multiple times a day and yes, it is very annoying. I dry heave when I'm nervous, when my stomach is empty, when my stomach is over-filled, when I drink too fast or too much fluid, when I am trying to burp and a burp won't come out, and the list just goes on... It is very digusting andreally painful. They often leave me upset or unsettled after it they happen too. They are very embarrassing when they happen randomly and in public, which often induce panic in me.

I have, however, gotten to the point where I usually don't have to leave the room when I'm dry heaving - meaning, I can actually sit through whatever I was in the middle of and just spot a trashcan so I can feel "safe". Sometimes when they get rather severe, I have to physically get into an open space or where I can get some fresh air (outside, away from people, the bathroom, etc...). I had a pretty bad case of them in Wal-Mart less than an hour ago. I almost went running out of the store because they were so bad, but they eventually subsided and I went on with my shopping.

The panic usually sets in when they just don't seem to stop or last more than about 20minutes. I also start to get worried that I will actually V* if my throat becomes very raw and I start gagging, all while having a case of the dry heaves. The gagging freaks me out the most! Acid reflux + dry heaves = painful

I also have an eating disorder that is not directly related to my emet and dry heaving often occurs as a complication.
I\'m always a shade of purple...
