Since I can remember, I can always count on catching one sv or another about once every two years or so. Never a good time but you get through it the best you can. However, in the past year, I have managed to contract an sv 3 times in the space of 8 months!!! This is in spite of the fact of meticulous hand washing, food safety precautions, etc. The first two I picked up through my daughter's day care. It's wierd how my daughter only contracted it once, but my husband and I were leveled by it twice in two months. The third sv I have no idea how I got but it was over labor day weekend. This time, my husband and daughter were fine but my parents came down with it two days later. I felt so bad because I made sure to bleach the toilets, toilet handles, sink, clean the linens---anything I may have touched...and they still got sick. So, now I find I am obsessed with learning about norovirus and how to avoid one because they are so incredibly awful! The worst is the anticipation of the horror to come but I also deal with the WORST dry heaves after the v* andmore than once, Ibecame seriously dehydrated (although these times I avoided consuming anything because I was afraid it would make the v* start up again). I have heard that taking very small sips of gatorade or gingerale can actually help stop dry heaves. Is this true?Has anyone else dealt with this? Any advice about how to get through the worst of it as painlessly as possible? At this point, I will continue trying my best to avoid another sv but as you can imagine, I feel pretty defeated.I even went to the doctor's because I was so disturbed and had him run blood tests to make sure there wasn't something more seriously wrong with me or my immune system. The good news is that I checked out okay. The bad news is...the awful sick experiences I've had over the past year have made me become OCD with avoiding germs and waaayyy too preoccupied with getting stomach sick. It's driving me nuts! I so wish they would develop some sort of vaccine for norovirus like they have for the flu. I understand that norovirus' keep mutating but so does the influenza virus. They develop a new vaccine every year for it. I really hope they find a way to do that for norovirus. Sign me up for that one!
