this if for all of you who drink diet coke. Take precaution. Check out this link. http://www.dorway.com/jcohen.html. And next time you drink a diet coke, look at the label. There is actually a warning on the can. It says "Contains Phenalaylanine and pneukontronics which is the scientific name for aspartame. Aspartame is bad stuff and can worsen pre-existing conditions such as anxiety.

Just wanted to share this with you all. I stopped drinking diet coke about 5 years ago and noticed that my panic attacks became less frequent and less servere and did not have nearly as much nausea or random headaches too.

I do not drink or eat anything with artificial sweetners. It is bad stuff. I drank it before and it caused all these weird problems. Janet Starr Hull wrote all about it. It is really crazy to read her stuff cause so much of what I read was so much of what I was feeling!!! ~Brandi~

Hi there!!

I love Diet Coke!! But I do try to limit my caffiene intake and don't drink it in the afternoon or evening. In the morning I am a zombie without it! But I have noticed if I drink too much I feel like crap---shaky and ill. Maybe I need to cut down more.......
Mary, I don't like plain old water either, so I get the flavored kinds. Not the sparking, carbonated water, but something like Fruit2O which is just water with natural flavors. My favorite is Walgreens brand---they have Peach and Grape flavored water and it tastes amazing. Fruit2O is good too, and you can get it at just about any store around. Propel is another one, but I personally think it's too sweet. I also drink a lot of Crystal Light. They have those little "to go" packets that you can put in a water bottle---love it. It is the only way I can and will drink water!

Thanks! I do like Fruit20 and other flavored bottled water. And, I like Wylers and Crystal Light type stuff. Maybe I will just try to cut back on diet pop....Is Diet Pepsi just as bad??

Thanks for the information. I saw the connection with my anxiety rising and having n* after drinking that stuff so I don't drink it anymore. I can't stand all diet drinks. I usually drink water or juices. The only soda I drink is Ginger Ale (gee, wonder why..haha)

Yes, anything that has "diet" in the title as far as beverages go contains it.

I don't drink anything that has caffeine in it. I gave it all up earlier this year and I've gotta tell you that my stomach has been so much better since I stopped fizzy drinks. I used to just drink Coke all the time. It's not easy though. The first day after I gave it up I was fine but by the second day I had the WORST headache and was exhausted haha. It passed, the cravings passed and I feel so much better for it. If I have any caffiene now I notice straight away it makes me jittery and anxious.

Well- there is no real conclusive evidence that aspartame is harmful. Everytime a study says that is it, another study is conducted that debunks the previous one. Some of the problem is that a lot of studies are conducted on rats, and they are given a higher dose than any human would/could consume. The results just aren't generalizable.

I can see the caffeine in soda making anxiety worse- which means that an excess of soda can be the culprit, just not for the sweetener. I know that if I have a lot of soda or coffee, I am more easily startled, and can get the shakes. LOL- I can't see that being beneficial to my anxiety

In my head both aspartame and caffeine are very bad and should be avoided. *drinks from her bottle of dr. pepper*

I have been eating and drinking for s*** lately and I feel like crap. Caffeine definitely makes anxiety worse. I'm once again addicted to caffeine and waiting until after finals to once again kick that habit. But, it's all bad stuff.

Diet Rite doesn't have aspertame. I remember a couple years ago, when my MIL was on a diet, she wouldn't drink any other diet beverages. Personally, I cannot stand diet drinks. They taste disgusting to me. When I'm dieting, I pretty much drink water or unsweetened iced tea. If I MUST have soda, I'll drink diet Dr. Pepper. But not very often.

If aspertame causes cancer or whatever, I'm already screwed because I smoke. Everything causes cancer nowadays.

I also love Diet Coke but stopped drinking it for years due to the apartame. BUT they now make Diet Coke with Splenda, the same used in Diet Rite. The box looks the same as the regular Diet Coke so be sure to look for the little Splenda label on it.

I NEVER drink diet coke! I hate all sodas/pops, just grosses me out. My sister hates them too. My mom, on the other hand, is addicted to diet coke/pepsi, whatever... and she's a nervous wreck, if you ask me, lol

Unless you suffer from phenylketonuria, are allergic to aspartame, or
drink 12 cans* of Coke a day, aspartame is pretty benign. A lot of the
"science" you can find online is hooh-hah-- take the new
anti-Splenda/sucralose movement, for instance. They scream OMG POISON,
but if you actually read the scientific papers and do the math, you'll
find you'd need to eat over 10,000 packets a day to reach the toxic
threshold. LOL. And if you want cancer, just eat 70 pounds of french
fries in one sitting. Pepsi One and french fries ALL THE WAY!

Anywho, I'm with Amber. Five bucks says the problem is caffeine. X)

*Everybody's tolerance is different. The limit for me is about 6 cans
in under 12 hours (no caffeine) before I start to get a headache. No
horrific permanent damage, just a headache.

I just wanted to add something : while scientists are on the fence about the effects about aspartame, its been proven that the caffine in the coke is a stimulant - caffine can cause people to become jittery and anxious, and high strung.

Its possible that your decline in anxiety and panic attacks could be caused by a more limited amount of caffine in your diet, and not the aspartame.

or it could be something else entirely different - maybe you've learned to control your anxiety and haven't realized that.

I do agree with you on the fact that its probably not a good idea to drink pop anyways, and if you can cut it out of your diet, that's great. I only have one once in awhile, due to my IBS. I do notice however, that I can drink the defaffinated diet coke/pepsi, while the regular diet coke upsets my stomach.

* just read through all the replies and realized I'm just saying what amber did. lol. Anyways, I'm with her on this one haha,

I don't drink or eat Diet anything because I hate the taste. I usually try to drink water bottles, tea, juice, or milk. I doget pretty fussy if we don't have Dr. Pepper or 7-Up in the house though.
