I just read this in the current WomansDay magazine and also found it on their website! This MAY be very hopeful info!!

Disclaimer: I am NOT posting this to start a war, and I am just posting what someone else wrote, so I didn't make this up myself.

    Hand Sanitizers Get A Thumbs-Up
Everybody knows a germ-phobe who carries around her own little bottle of hand sanitizer and uses it constantly, after shaking hands, touching a doorknob and so on. Turns out, she’s not so crazy. According to the Mayo Clinic, hand sanitizers, which kill 99.9 percent of certain germs that cause illness, are actually more effective than soap and water in ridding your hands of bacteria and even viruses.

Other studies have shown that regular use of hand sanitizers reduces absentee rates in elementary schools and universities. Pediatrician Thomas J. Sandora, M.D., M.P.H., of the Division of Infectious Diseases at Children’s Hospital in Boston, conducted a five-month study of 292 families with at least one child in day care. The families given hand sanitizers to use in the home experienced 59 percent fewer secondary gastrointestinal illnesses and 20 percent fewer secondary respiratory illnesses than the families without the product.

“Hand sanitizers are actually more effective than soap and water against rotavirus, which is the most common cause of gastroenteritis or stomach flu among young children,” reports Dr. Sandora. “They’re also faster than regular hand washing, less drying and don’t require access to a sink.”

One warning: Read the label before you buy. Not all hand sanitizers on the market have enough alcohol content to do much good. The FDA recommends a concentration of 60 to 95 percent ethanol, isopropanol or ethyl alcohol.

Well I would use hand sanitizer but I can't because my hands are already raw and fried from washing them so often that the hand sanitizer feels like salt to an open wound.

Sorry for the run on sentence.

I do wash them often...too often perhaps.

I think the issue with them is that they do kill germs, buta person needs to encounter a certain number of germs on a daily basis to build up immunity, if you become reliant on sanitizers every bug that does get through will have more impact.

Yeah...but they still don't kill norovirus. Although I suppose all we really care about is getting gastroenteritis less so it could still help us. Just be aware that handsanitizers are not effective against noroviruses which cause most adult sv's.

I use hand-sanitizer but I don't trust it much anymore, ever since coming on here and reading about how it doesn't kill norovirus. However, w/ the sanitzers and wipes, I've still been able to remain sv*-free. I mean, I try to wash my hands whenever I can, but when I'm somewhere where I can't access a bathroom, such as school, I use the wipes b4 I eat. I do gotta say though, in 7th grade (when I started) I was catching a lot more respiratory viruses than b4. But after that everything was fine. See in elementary school I always used the sinks in the classroom.

    Doesn't everyone?

Interesting thing. My sister is gross. She never washes her hands and she works with people and money all day and yet she hardly gets sick. My mum thinks it's probably because she's built up such a high immunity to germs. I always worry that if I wash my hands too much and I stay too clean then my immune system will SUCK at fighting off germs when it needs to.
Be courageous, believe in yourself, and be the best woman you can be. I'm with you all the way.
