i'm sorry i hate posting about this because i don't want to cause anxiety to any one, but i have to vent....so today i go into work and my coworker tells me she had food poisoning over the weekend...she was vomiting so much on saturday, that her husband couldn't get her to go to the hospital..she couldn't leave the bathroom it was that bad...she said that it continued into sunday...nonstop vomiting!!!!...finally on monday her husband said we gotta go to emergency...they diagnosed her with food poisoning....she said she was so sick she thought she was gonna die!!....she said she couldn't stop throwing up.....she still hasn't eaten anything to this day other than a litle bread and crackers....i'm thinking this is a virus...this is what they do to people nowadays!!!violent nonstop vomiting is what i always hear...all non-emets always say food poisoning...i'm not buying it....what do you guys think?...don't you normally have diahrea with food poisoning?....the norovirus causes vomiting like this, doesn't it??...i've been so freaked all day...i can't stop thinking about it....this is what i fear the most...me or my children getting a virus that causes nonstop vomiting

i am with you. that is what i fear the most as well. what i always try to tell myself in these kind of situations is that many times when people tell a story they exagerate it a lot. maybe not on purpose, but sometimes it just happens. maybe she wasn't quite as sick as she is saying. i know that doesn't help much, but it's all i can think of. also, i have certainly had food poisoning before with no diarrhea and just vomiting. it was the last time i was sick and it was pretty bad. so, maybe she really did have food poisoning. the good thing is that it seems like she waited a good time before returning to work. (was today her first day back?)

try your best to relax and do not give in to the what if's. i hate the what if's as much as i hate the yukkie stuff because just thinking about the crap can make me feel as bad as actually going through it.

thanks for the response..no actually she returned on tuesday, but i was off that day... i asked her why she came back so early and she said she needed to get out of the house!! she was flat on her back in bed for 3 days...the good thing is her husband didn't catch it and the doctors said it wasn't contagious...i'm sure!..how could they possibly know that!..i hear you on the exaggeration thing, like the vomiting probably wasn't nonstop, but the way she described it it sounded pretty close to that...the thingthat's killing me is the what if's, that's my main problem...what if i caught this, what if i couldn't stand up to get to the doctor?....she couldn't even stand up she said, i would call an ambulance i'm sure!!

wow... yeah. i couldn't imagine enduring that without calling an ambulance or something. i don't know.. i just don't think a virus would make her that sick. mabye i'm naive, but i am still wanting to think food poisoning on this one. and what the heck? she wanted to get out of the house? she should have taken a short walk, not come into work? ugh. people are strange.

did you know an actual symptom of food poisoning is feeling like you are going to die, and actually wanting to die? anyway, i believe it could have been food poisoning because it's often more severe, and you said she went to the hospital right? well they can actually test for bacteria or a virus... so maybe it was just food poisoning.

OK...My Banker got food poisoning a few months ago...She told me the story and I was very anxious because I thought, "How do they know, this is a sv*". Come to find out, It was food poisoning...

My Mother works in a lab...She tests blood/urine/fluids all day for this type of thing...YES, you can diagnose food poisoning with lab work...

I am sure that the Doctor she went to did this and was able to test for either bacterial or viral.

    Don't worry...She had food poisoning.

Please try to relax and get some good rest. You are fine.

i'm freaking out!!...i read that norovirus is diagnosd by the prominence of vomiting and litle fever...she never had a fever...this means to me that norovirus ( a really bad one ) is in our community now and she got it from eating out, because she has no kids and wasn't around any sick that she knows of....food poisoning symptoms always include diarhea, norovirus is persistent violent vomiting...i'm obsessed with the fear of myself or my kids catching this!!do you think that not everyone will vomit with norovirus??

Argh thats rough. To be honest thats what scares the tar out of me too, just the non stop being sick. Usually tho we tend to be more careful about foods and being sure it wasn't left out and things like that.

What gets me is a scenario like this poor lady went through would scare anyone, even those who are not afraid to get sick. I mean its scary to feel like she did, so how are we to get feeling okay with something that its normal to feel freaked out by (what I mean is her extreme case).

I think that if they diagnosed her with food poisoning that they probably ran labs on her. My nephew had a sv a week and 1/2 ago and when my sister took him in to the dr. they ran a blood cluture and discoovered it was viral and not fp.

Yes Sheri...FP* and SV* can be diagnosed with labs.

Try not to worry...I know easier said than done.

thanks guys... i don't think they ran labs on her, because i asked her how did they know it wasn't a virus and she said, i don't know that's just what they said... you guys are right, doctors cant know fp or sv without lab work
