Have any of you ever heard that you cannot catch a stomach virus by just being around someone who has it? My doctor told me that if you wash your hands after touching the sick person or something like a cup or something that they have touched, then you want get it. I find that hard to believe. I always thought that it was in the air. I am a Lysol finatic and spray like two cans in my house when someone is sick V***. I was just curious to know if any of you have ever heard that saying. Response would be helpful!

I never heard of that before. I know washing your hands when a person is supposed to and keeping your hands away from the face helps prevent them. I always thought that just being around someone who is sick can make someone else sick. Especially, if they v* by you. I guess the spores in the v* are in the air for awhile, but I'm not sure. Maybe your doctor is right, but I don't know for sure. That's just my opinion.

I also heard that you cannot catch it if you wash your hands for atleast twenty five seconds with a good soap--like anti bacterial. And always keep your hands away from your nose, eyes and mouth. And to be extra safe I keep my dirty hands away from my ears and cuts as well. I wish I knew if this was true or not. I always thought also that if someone v-ed and you breathed in the air that was contaminated with v then you would catch the illness. I wish I knew if this was true or not. Maybe when I head back to my doctor I'll ask her.

I don't know, but I HOPE it's true! That would ease alot of my anxiety about being in public, that's for sure.

I heard that only the Norwalk virus can be trasmitted from particles in the air from v*, or another bodily fluid. Washing your hands after touching something that person touched is a good way of preventing the virus from being spread. Also, if the sick person is a family member or close friend, encourage them to wash their hands after pooing or v*, as that can prevent infection too.

My mom used to spray the entire house with Lysol too, if me and my sister were sick, but according to those Oust commercials, spraying Lysol doesn't kill germs in the air, but only on surfaces. But now they have Oust air sanitizer, and Lysol made their own brand of air sanitizer, too.

By the way, I've read from numerous sources that anti-bacterial soap is not any better than regular soap. The motion of rubbing your hands together vigorously apparently helps to slough off skin cells that contain germs, or something like that, and the soap itself doesn't do that much. From what I've read, if soap is unavailable, then using a hand sanitizer, like Purell works just as well. And I've heard this from many different magazine articles, Internet sites, etc.

So, good hygiene will most likely prevent you from catching a virus.

I hope it's true -a friend of a friendI know has a virus at the moment and although I haven't been anywhere near them it still bothers me as my friend might see them and then i'll see my friend....

How do we get so paranoid? These are the times when I wish I could have normal reactions to vomit

I've read that any soap is good enough to remove germs - it doesn't have to be antibacterial.

according to my best friend who is a biology major, viruses and bacterial cannot live in the air and those commericals for Oust and all that are a bunch of crap.

thanks to everyone who responded. I feel a lot better about it now since more than myself has heard this. If it is definately true, then at least we know what to do to try and avoid getting sick. If anyone asks a doctor to confirm this, let me know what they tell you. I am really dying to know if this is a true factor or not.

I also read the same thing about the soap, it can be any kind, its the scrubbing that counts....and a nurse friend of mine als o did say that as long as I washed my hands before eating or touching my face then I would be ok, and she said it isn't airborne, I'd like to believe in her!

My dad always told me that germs are heavy, so unless a person directly
coughs into your face or something, then you can't catch something from
them. I don't know if it's true or not, but it has comforted me a lot at
times. I always make sure to wash my hands A LOT when around
someone who's sick, and so far it works.
