I've spent far too much of my life (now over 10 years) dealing with this stupid phobia alone, I'm tired of it taking over my life and causing me to worry about things that normal people don't have to give a second thought to. I'm ready to be rid of it. I'll be starting from scratch though, I've never seen a doctor or anything about it before and I have no idea how they can even treat such a thing. Any ideas? Tips? Words of encouragement? Personal experiences?

    I really appreciate it all!

    Best of luck to you!

I see a counselor and the reason why I wanted to see her was for my phobia but for some reason she's focusing on my eating habits, depression and self injury.

Again, good luck. You CAN beat this.

Our insurance pays it all but 25.00. They pay 80.00 and then I just pay the 25.00 copay every weekly visit. Pretty affordable.

i dont know if things are differnt in Canada Laura. can i ask how old you are?

i basically got the ball rolling by going to see my GP and she referred me to a psychiatrist e.t.c e.t.c

just try not to be ashamed by it. i didnt go to the docs for years on end because i felt too humiliated to do nething about it. but the longer u leave it the harder it is i guess! so try and think what u want to do as soon as possible.

btw - welcome to our family =) hope u feel u can come here weneva for support.

    Laura,

Check out the Treatments section of this website - the sticky links on the top. I wrote a couple of papers on how to find a therapist and another that's info for professionals.

In Canada the best therapy is private, which is only partly covered by some extended health plans...you may not want to just go for 10 visits to some counsellor on your extended health plan. That seldom treats emetophobia, or even scratches the surface. Depending how bad the symptoms are, it may take 50-100 hours to treat successfully.

You may be lucky enough to get your doctor to refer you to a psychiatrist who does psychotherapy, as opposed to just drug management. I know a couple of people who have these...and they are covered 100% by your Canadian medical plan. But they're rare. I personally have paid for private therapy, so I could interview them and get just the right person. But I'm 45 and have a good job, and I put it as a priority in my life so I can afford it.I've very grateful and fortunate. Most people are not in this situation. Nevertheless, there is quite a bit of help out there if you really look for it.

If you're in Vancouver, let me know cuz I am too!
