Hi.

Im a christian and Ive just been watching the passion of the christ and the main reason i was watching it is to get a clear idea of the crucifixion of Jesus. I'd never really studied it before and didn't have a clear idea so I read the relevant verses in my bible and then i watched it. I never had any idea how much pain Jesus had to go through when he died. I now realise how much Jesus has done for me. I am so unworthy and I love his for what he has sacrificed for me. Has anyone else seen this film and then they'll probably know what im talking about

I saw it. I knew he had but not from what was said in the bible. I think, though as detailed as it was, that everyone should see how awful it was. To see that he was scared at first. I cried when I watched the movie. I wish my husband had been with me to see it. Though he is quite religious (his father is a reverand) so he realizes it all.
Don't say you are unworthy though. You are worthy. You are here and you are a wonderful person.

I haven't been able to see that movie yet....I hope I can soon. My mom wants me to wait till I get a little older. I think it's great that Mel Gibson made that movie; it shows how much Jesus cares about us and loves us and whatHe's gone through just for us! I'll never lose my faith in Jesus; He's always there for you!

The movie has kinda opened my eyes to how much Jesus needs to be thanked and praised for what he has done. I love him for what he has done for me and what he is doing to me and what he has planned for me.

I haven't seen it yet because I was too afraid that someone near me would throw up in the theater. I had heard about people doing that from the emotion and bloody scenes. It really stinks that emet had to go and ruin it for me. I'm sure I will watch it on video soon, but somehow I don't think it will be quite as powerful on my tiny tv. But I'm looking forward to it.

I dont want to start any sort of flame war but i find that religion is a handle for people to hold on to (in a very very bad way), because of fear of the unknown. its used so that people who have nothing can give their life meaning, but i think that as a person you should be better than that. blind faith in something is dangerous and foolish.

I hear what you're saying and i respect that its your opinion 1rly. I always find religion something to hold onto as well. It is always easy easy to slip away from faith. Although the christian faith promotes not giving up on your faith in god. It takes ages butive found its so worthholding on to. However, it is your opinion andI am appreciative of it -I'm not really a fan of starting a flame war either lol.

one thing which does not make sense is whyshould we use time togo to church and praying and all that other stuff, shouldnt it be good enough to be a nice person to help others and not do anything that harms anyone?

damn sorry for forgetting things. an example: it would be better and for more useful of you time to work at a homeless shelter rahter than spending time praying and singing.

HI 1rly. Am happy to answer any questions you have so dont worry about forgetting things!

It isn't just being a nice person all the time which gets you safe from hell and into paradise/heaven (whichever way you look at it) its through faith in God and letting him enter your life that secures with him. You've got to show that you rely on him and enjoy following him. Faith is the largest sector you should focus on in religion as well as following it which is why time is devoted a lot to praise. Jesus deserves as much praise as possible. After all, who else would give their life for me and everone else to live? That's just my view point though.

Happy to answer anymore questions if anyone has any. Best Wishes, Chris

i have often slipped in and out of faith. I beleive there is a heaven, but i am not sure who i perceive to be God.
My family are not overly religeous, and they don't exactly encourage me to be, although they wouldn't go against any decision i make to attend church etc.
I do agree with 1rly, many see religion as a comfort, because they have no idea about their fate.
However, we can't judge, because we have never experienced an encounter with "God,"not consciously anyway
Sorry to change topic, no i have never seen the film, Chris, but i would probably enjoy it.

I find that when I "give up" on God, my life gets worse. It's the times when I have faith that I feel secure and peaceful. Without my faith, I'd be lost. In Alcoholics Anonymous, we have to turn our lives over to a higher power of our choice. Without it, we end up drunk again.

It's true that for some people, religion is primarily about performing their little rituals to stay on "God's good side," but for others it's so much more. I'd rather have blind faith than have an empty hollow feeling I have without it. But everyone is entitled to their beliefs. If it works for them, why put them down for it? Live and let live, right? I thought the movie was ridiculous....and to top it off, mel gibson has gone off his rocker..what a disgusting man he is now. I think he has a messiah complex, or at least the beginnings of one.

religion of any sort, even the "cool" ones right now like buddhism and that qabbalah nonsense, isan insult to all humanity. I fear cultural phenomena such as this wretched movie will only retard humanity's progress even further.

Okay, now I'm mad. Athiests or agnostics are entitled to their beliefs, but to consider peoples' religious beliefs nonsense--that's "intolerant." Liberals call conservative fundamentalist Christians (or any other people who stick to their beliefs) intolerant, when atheists are intolerant themselves. You are all forcing anyone with faith to give up their beliefs--taking down the 10 commandments from federal buildings, prohibiting prayer from schools, or any other public place, removing the cross from any city flag or symbol. We founded our countries under Christian principles. I don't know about Canada, but our constitution declares we have freedom of religion. But when that freedom of religion--or athieism--forces another to give up their founding fathers' beliefs, it's INTOLERANCE.

It's disgusting. How can you say that someone with religious beliefs of any kind are stupid? If it gives them hope for the future, a dream to believe in, a goal to reach for--why is that stupid? What makes our beliefs so wrong? Are we hurting you by believing what we do? Do we threaten your security? How dare you declare yourself to be better than someone else because you don't believe in a Higher Power! That's arrogance! Don't the atheists preach that all people are equals? Well, you obviously are claiming that you are better than your fellow man because you don't believe in something so "stupid" like a Creative Intelligence, Higher Power, Mother Earth, whatever.

I'm sure you have your own goals and dreams. You think you're so intelligent because you don't believe in a Higher Power. How arrogant you are. Where did we come from? Some weird phenomenon that just happened to build an entire universe by chance? We are decended from monkeys, right? What created the monkeys? What/who created Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, and countless other stars and galaxies?

Think about medical science. Doctors peform countless operations to save the dying everyday. But what is the healing power behind it? They use their tools to save the dying, they put in the stitches to close the wounds--but what or Who does the healing? What about broken bones? What is the driving force behind patching together the cells, marrow, and whatever is necessary to heal those broken bones? There is something out there greater than you.

I won't preach Christianity down your throat, because I know how we are so "hypocritical," but for goodness sake, believe in SOMETHING!

What makes you better than me? Am I stupid for believing in a power greater than myself? Well, I have an above average IQ. Does that mean anything to you? Some geniuses out there believe in a Higher Power. Does that make them stupid? George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Ben Franklin believed in God. Are they stupid?

The explorers believed that the earth was round, even when no one else did. Does that make them stupid? Nobody believed them, because they couldn't SEE that the earth was round. But they went out there, "risking their lives" because they believed in something they couldn't see.

Now before you preach your message of intolerance and superiority, think for a minute about what you're saying. You're "better" than a stupid Christian, Jew, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, or whatever, because they believe in something they can't see.

Can you see atoms? No. But you believe they exist, right? I guess that makes you "stupid," doesn't it? Think a little bit before you speak your message of intolerance next time, okay?

That is a beautiful post Heather

I have been sort of scarred by all things religious. My Grandparents are so religious and have spent years trying to put those beliefs on me and make me feel crappy for not believing. I have many views and theories on religion but I do not post them or push them on people who are religious. I have also learnt myself about different religions because my Grandparents way of being Christian made me believe everyone would be that way (They preach how you should love, but then just look down and hate people and judge them) But i know that not everyone is like that now.

Whether I believe in God or Buddha or whatever is irelevant, religion gives people hope and strength to get through each day. It gives people a purpose. As long as people are not forcing their beliefs on me or using faith as an excuse to be prejudiced in anyway (that doesn't apply to you guys here just some people I have met lol) I couldn't care less what they believe. If it helps you live your life as a better person and be happy how can it be wrong?

It may not be something I believe in but I wont condemn or insult those who do. That is narrow minded.
Be courageous, believe in yourself, and be the best woman you can be. I'm with you all the way.

I am open minded about who people call the higher power. I can see what you mean hippy chick. My husband was raised by a reverand and there was a lot of stuff he HAD to do and COULDN"T do.
I know people that go to church and sing to the Lord, but they are by no means "nice people". We dont go to church anymore as I don't think it is a "necassary thing" I think that by honoring him, loving him, and beinga good person that is what is important. We do go once in a while but we both realize that it is out of respect and that a lot of the churches now a days do have a "culty"feel to them.
I am fine with people that are athiests, I dated one and almost married one....BUT he always pushed it down my throat about how "stupid" it was and that it was only right to believe what could be proved.
He made me feel bad about who I was. what I believed and when I tried to follow along with him my life went down hill.
My husband and I pray that my phobia will either get better or that I will have the strength and nothing but the best things have happened.
Mel Gibson is a wonderful man. He had been through many hardships before he became an actor. In fact he almost commited suicide. Then a pastor took him in and taught him about faith and confidence. He turned to God and his life got better. The movie is his tribute. I am babbling now and I should be going to work. Anyways Peace out all and may God (or BUddha or Allah...etc) be with you

*is slightly worried about getting into this* Ok people please do not take this in an offensive way or anything but even though I believe that there is something out there that is more powerful than I am,if God wants us to be happy then why did he create emet? Or any of those other phobias or diseases or terrorism? I'm not trying to be insulting I truly want to know peoples opinions on this. Please don't yell. *hides*

I agree with you heather. It is almost like people are saying fundamentalists and conservatives are stupid which is an unfair statement. People just say that because they want people to "slam" christians which is unfair to "slam" someone with particular beliefs. I believe that the power of equality can exist if people let it.

Plus, people believe that science started the world not god. Well who started science? Who caused the big bang? Someone had to start it; Some sort of power had to kick in and i believe it is god who did that.

I also agree with you in the sense that when i turn my back on god, i feel like an empty shell and feel depressed. When I get back to him, i recapture that relationship i had and i love that feeling.

    Hi, Heather (and everyone),

Like Hannah, I am afraid to get into this. All I want to say is please don't take what Skon said to be the opinion of all liberals, agnostics, or atheists. I personally am a very strong liberal, and also agnostic, but I pride myself in NOT being intolerant. I agree with you that there are some who call themselves liberal that are in fact going against their own beliefs by judging others. I would never do that. Be careful when you make statements like "you are all trying....etc." based on the comments of one person. (Sorry, Skon....some of what you said I agree with, but you said it in a very insulting way!) I would NEVER call someone stupid for their personal religious beliefs. I admire and respectyou for them, even though I don't share them. And, I would certainly never profess to better than you or anyone on this planet!

So, there are my two cents....(please don't yell, as Hannah says!)

    Peace,

    Mary

Wow, I'm not sure I want to add either but I will lol. I agree w/ Mary, please don't assume all liberals are judgemental. I am a Christian who happens to be Liberal. And I agree also that everyone is entitled to their own beliefs or lack thereof so long as they can be respectful of others. It's so unfortunate that wars have been started over soemthing that could and should be beautiful and simple. Whether you believe in God or not doesn't it sound lieka good idea to be kind to each other and understanding and loving?

Hannah, I don't know the answer to your question. There are many things we will never know. My opinion/belief is that bad things and difficult things happen to teach us, to make us stronger, to pull us closer together and when all of this seems irrelivent I remember God knows all and I know nothing and He also gave us free will so when someone does soemthing horrible (like terrorism) it is their act but God gives us each other to lean on. I mean I can think of plenty of times I have thought "God why am I going thru this." whatever "this" may be at the time but truly there have been many times I was able to look back and say "wow I really learned from that tough lesson" we aren't our best or who we will become w/o hardships. Imagine a world whereeverything was handed to you? How could it be appreciated then? So whether youbelieve in God or not, I hope you can see the optimism in the bad times.

Hmm, this is always a sticky topic!! Heather, that was a good post.

I feel that tho I may not agree with other people's religious views, it does not give me the right to call them stupid or ridiculus or downgrade them and treat them badly. I respect your right to have a different view than I do, tho I may not agree with it.

I would like to say something tho about religion being a crutch. To be honest, in my life I have found religion to be ANYTHING but a crutch. It has made me face some of the hardest toughest things about myself, and scrutinize them with brutal honesty. Its a very hard process, and to be honest it would be (in the short run anways) a LOT easier for me to just say "hey forget God" and go do what *I* want to do and forget about improving myself in the way God would have me and forget about all those responsibilities and such. I think those who say religion isa crutch for people dont fully realize what it is. It makes you face some really tough things about yourself, I wouldn't have faced these things about myself without religion, and it would have saved me this hard road of self-analysis in making myself a better person in God's eyes.

Thank you for the support. I meant every word.

While I do not like to start arguments if they are unnecessary, I will defend myself if being attacked, and I felt attacked. However, I did not retaliate with as much hatred and ignorance as he did. I simply defended my belief in a Higher Power (I call Him God/Jesus/Holy Spirit), but I didn't even try to force Christianity down anyone's throats. People will only accept it if they are willing to listen. Some people who call themselves Christians have destroyed the image of Jesus. Christians are supposed to be Christ-like and many of them are anything but, so I understand why there is so much anger and intolerance toward them. But if anyone is curious as to what Christianity is really about--and I promise it isn't about bake sales and churches begging for money, lol-- feel free to email me.

Mary, I'm sorry that I offended you. I realize there are some people with liberal viewpoints who aren't as intolerant and I respect that and thank you for it.

Thanks to those who aren't intolerant. It's nice not to be attacked once in awhile.

Whoa there buddy, it's not like this movie just popped out of no where and everyone is like "whoa, Jesus died for my sins". People have known this story for ages ages and ages and we seem to be progressing pretty well (though some could argue otherwise with all our fast food, cell phones, and hatred towards each other) This movie isn't even a phenemonon, it was in the spot light for about 2 months and that was it. No big deal, slow news day so they had to find something to broadcast. I believe you're just taking things a tad out of porportion. I respect the fact that people have different opinions, but next time let's try to keep it all on a mutual level, so we're not all at each other's throats.Edited by: r311dude

It's things like this thatconcern me; To answer a bunch of posts in one general sense, I'm a Liberal Christian, I have seen the movie and I thought it was extremely powerful. I just don't understand where all this hostility comes from, Skon. So we believe in a higher power, so what? I'll take blind faith anyday if that's what it amounts to, because with Faith, I feel secure in myself in that I can turn my problems over to God and I feel better in the world.... me personally, just me, and I'm not hurting anyone else doing that. Humanity has from the beginning looked for a higher powerto get through life. It ranged from ancient Gods, the moon, nature... Christianity, Judaism, etc. etc. but humanity is progressing exponentially. How is that retarding progress of humanity? I won't get into all my beliefs because I don't believe pushing mine down anyone's throat, but this is intolerant and THAT will retard humanity's progress.

Listen to the news and you hear war, disaster and disease. Look at the lives of many of your friends, and you see tragedy. Consider your own life, and you may well wonder why some sad or even awful thing happened.
It must be clear to all fair-minded people that a loving God could not possibly will that these things should happen. But if God is all-powerful, and all loving, why do they still happen?
The simplest answer is man’s freedom. God created us with the hope that we should become loving human beings. Freely learning to love God and each other is the key to happiness. And the very purpose of creation is a heaven from the human race, where God from His love can make us eternally happy. But to compel someone to love you is impossible. You can’t make your married partner love you. You can’t make your kids love you. They freely choose to. That’s the nature of love; it is freely given or it isn’t love at all. Unless we freely choose to love God our love won’t be real.
We are not robots. We are human beings, free to choose who and what we will love. God won’t make you do what is right. To do so would be contrary to His love and His wisdom. It would be contrary to the very purpose of His creation. Therefore He permits evil. He does not will it.
Permission of evil lets us see the consequences of our faults. It is an invitation to change our ways. Take for example the coach of a team. On Monday morning he shows the team a video of how they played. He certainly doesn’t will the mistakes that show up on the screen. He hopes that each player will learn from his mistakes and play that much better the next time. And the better they learn to play the more they will love the game and respect the coach and their team mates. In the game of life, we can learn to love and respect our Divine Coach and our neighbors on the team. When we do, we really enter into the joy of life.
Or again, parents sometimes quite wisely let their children try to do something, knowing that they will fall down, and maybe even in measured ways hurt themselves. Why? Because they hope they will learn from it. The Lord, our Heavenly Father only permits our falling down, if good can come out of it.
Last September we saw a national tragedy. At that time we tried to remember that all the good people who died are now finding their way to an eternal and happy life in the Lord God’s heavenly kingdom. Now they love and serve each other as a wonderful team. They are living in a world even more real than this, because they are surrounded by all the things they love. In Biblical terms they are entering into the joy of their Lord.
With some time behind us, if we look we can see some of the good that has come out of September 11 for us as a nation. Many people have taken a more serious look at their lives. Many have played down their differences. It is harder to see, but even those who have suffered a direct and personal loss can learn from it. After their grief, perhaps they will think harder about eternal life. Perhaps they will discover a love and longing for their partners or friends that is very precious. Perhaps that longing will become the core of a new way of life for them, a way founded upon a belief in the hereafter and preparation for it. We do not always see the good which comes out of tragedy, but one thing we can know is, that it is never permitted unless it can be turned to good, if we let it be turned.
The Lord God does not will human suffering, but He does permit it. Indeed seeing the consequence of evil is the only way our hearts can be turned freely to a life of good
Dance like no one is watching. Sing like no one is listening. Love like you\'ve never been hurt and live like it\'s heaven on Earth.

I don't know where anyone gets off calling my statements "intolerant". I also don't know how atheists have "beliefs". Belief is a weakness, faulty logic, primitive, burying-the-head-in-the-sand.Atheists have no beliefs. This is not intolerance. I let people do whatever the hell they want, I don't care. I can't change them.

That doesn't mean that I have to agree with something as silly as taking hold of "beliefs". Normally I keep my mouth shut because its pointless, but since other people started voicing their opinion I thought I'd give it a shot.

"Christianity, Judaism, etc. etc. but humanity is progressing exponentially. How is that retarding progress of humanity? I won't get into all my beliefs because I don't believe pushing mine down anyone's throat, but this is intolerant and THAT will retard humanity's progress."

Again, this is not intolerance. PC nonsense like this is getting old, really old, really fast. It's logic, pure and simple. Pragmatism. Reality is not always "tolerant", but this doesn't mean I am being "intolerant". Anyone is free to give up their mind to belief, I don't care, I don't expect to change anything, nor will I try. My fault for being born in such a primitive era.

Humanity is not progressing as well as it could, and part of that is because of mind-prisons like religion. Many scientific discoveries are being hampered because of silly ethical constraints, many of which originate within religion. Socially we're no better off than a few thousand years ago, with the exception of laws and things..People can't even handle seeing other people naked even in 2004..this also stems from conservative religious thought.

Another fatal error commited by religion is claiming to have answers to something which is not currently possible to have answers to. It's ok to ask these questions, asking these questions is simply "metaphysics". But, once you start answering them, then you are getting into religion. There is currently no way to accurately answer these questions, ergo, these answers being sold, are incorrect.

So, I don't really get how people can still accept antiquated ideas, ones that conflict with what we know about the universe currently. Christians would have us believe that dinosaurs didn't exist, and that the boneswe find are a "test from god" or something like that. Give me a break!I'm supposed to believe the earth is what..only 12 000 years old or sobecause some guy told another guy that god said that?I would hope in this day and age we'd move past such extreme leaps of logic.

There is absolutely nothing to lose from discarding any and all beliefs, and to concentrate on real things that can improve the world. "ooh but religous organizations help people" right? Well, so do secular ones, just as much.

Anyway, what I meant about the stupid movie was, that it seems to fire people's "faith" up even more, clouding judgment, then they get all proud of themselves for being in their religion, then they vote for a certain dickhead just because of his wearing of faith on his sleeve and not because of his competence....It's more like some fanatic for a sports team rather than a "spiritual" persuasion. That's all I meant when referring to this cultural phenomenon.

yeah, so don't get your panties all in a bunch just because I have something to say once in a while..I only did it because others were too so I thought you guys had maybe grown up a little and were able to handle a different view. Call me "intolerant", whatever. I'm not the one going around looking for ways to be offended, for it is nearly impossible for me to be offended by anything. In this way, I'm really living by the "golden rule" (which people think originated from the bible but it really didnt..it originated in china...interesting trivia bit for ya) here, because..nothing anyone can say will offend me, so...I just dish it out like I see it.
what a horrible night to have a curse.

I shouldn't even respond since this thread is so hijacked, and I apologize to Chris for my perpetuating that, but I just have to respond. Now Skon, you're lumping everyone who has a religion into one big pot, and you just can't do that! Plus, why do you have to be so f***ing rude and self righteous about this whole thing?

You don't know me, and don't know what I believe, and I think alot of your ideas are based on some generalized, ignorant assumptions. I don't like to be generalized. I am not here to try and change anyone's beliefs because frankly, I don't care and I don't think that anything that anyone else thinks or does is any of my business. I am sorry to disappoint you, but I'm also not easily offended, and you didn't get my panties in a bunch over this. I can handle as many different views as you can throw at me. I like to hear other opinions, because then maybe I can learn from other people, and hey, I may even be wrong, so I welcome differences. Just don't make statements about people when you don't know facts.

You come here on this thread titled "Christian faith post", perhaps with the intention of letting off some of your hostility towards religion on us. I don'tcare for the fact that you called what I believe "nonsense",or the fact that I even have beliefs as a "weakness". If you're such a live and let live type of guy, you're totally going against your own character! I thought I'd set a couple of things straight so that it'd throw a hole in your ignorant statements:

I am a Christian and I know that dinosaurs existed. I have a struggle alot of the time meshing my faith and my career. I've been schooled heavily in science and physics and by nature prefer things that are tangible. But this is the exact definition of having faith.

I'm a Christian and also believe in the separation of church and state. I'm trying hard not to make this political, but the gay marriage debate is exactly what happens when people get government and church jumbled up. I don't think government hasany business regulating religious issues.

Maybe you're having an off day, but you sure don't seem to be living by the golden rule by how you portrayed yourself here.... I remember your posts from the other site, and I seem to remember under your old name, you were quite rude there too. Differences I can handle, but rude assholes I can't.

Skon you may have your opinion and you may of course air it but you will find people listen a lot more to what you have to say if you drop the hostile attitude, as soon as you start using offensive language and hostile ways of speaking no one gives a damn what you have to say because they feel attacked.

Maybe you would have some good points but you hide them in arrogance and patronising tones and no I am not trying to offend you just trying to point out that if you dropped the attitude for 30 seconds people would probably be more than happy to discuss things with you. As it happens no one wishes to.

Further more attacking those, which is what you are doing, for what they believe will not be tolerated here. No one should have to justify their religion or put up with hostility from you. I suggest you find ways of re-phrasing what you say.

Everyone has the right to an opinion but sadly some people think that they can be insulting and mask it behind honesty. Well not here.Edited by: hippychick
