as some of you may already know, a couple of weeks ago i started working as a babysitter. i look after a 5 year old girl and her younger brother who is 1 and a half.
The little girl can be a handful to say the least, but recently iv been managing to get her to bed,on time, and even get her to sleep! ( result! )
However, her parents went out last night, went for a meal, and they left us blocks of aero chocolate each. now, you guys must know how large an aero is in proportion to other chocolate bars, and i don't eat chocolate anyway, so i was a little apprehensive about the little girl having it on top her tea..anyway
she's in her snuggly pj's and we've been playing a game, it's 10 minutes until her bedtime, and she asks for her chocolate.
i have to consider this for a moment, and so i tell her that ill put it onto a plate.
she has a whine about this, whilst i cut off 4 little blocks of it for her, and stick the rest into the fridge. After eating the chocolate, she makes a start on cheddar biscuits ( what a dodgy combination ) and then goes absolutely mental.
i ask her to brush her teeth, which is responded to by " NO NO NO NO!"
By this time, im really mad because iv asked her 3 times to finish her biscuits and brush her teeth, because it was getting late. She continued to defy everything i sed, so i lose patience and calmly wander up the stairs to check on her brother, who is wonderful and sleeps like a log.
So, im stood at the top of the stairs, after i have just been ordered to get the rest of the chocolate. Being emetophobic, ther's no way im letting her have the entire bar.. so i say that she's had enough. i don't think i was being unfair, because it was already 5 minutes past her bedtime, and she hadnt expressed an interest inher foodall night.
So i come back down the stairs, and the demon has locked the gate so that i can't get into the hallway. not only that, but she's swinging on it and pulling tongues at me lol.
I climb over the gate, and once again, she asks for the bloody chocolate bar, and when i respond to the affirmative, she goes and puts the tv on.
I storm into the lounge and turn it off, then continue to stand infront of the television whilst she has this big grin on her face. One of those "im really getting the better of you" smiles. By this time, im getting frustrated. I KNOW she's not hungry, she's just being a pain in the neck.
After trying to get her to brush her teeth for a solid 15 minutes, I use the toilet, intent on ignoring her.
Whilst im in the bathroom, she turns the light out on me! Im sat there, in the dark trying to pee :'(
Iv had enough, so I stop her from screaming and phone her mum. Her mum can't reason with her to get to bed, so after two phone-calls the parents had to come home..During this time, she suddenly turns and says, " i feel sick!!" i just rolled my eyes and handled it without panic becus i KNEW this was fake.
I was called boring and unfair, and was issued ultimatums by a 5 year old! I was so stressed out by the end of the evening, that i went home in such a mood. The parents took me home, and was GLAD i had phoned them!!
Just to round off my babysitting experience from hell, I have to go back on tuesday :'( help!

Eek, that must have been very frustrating. 5 year olds can be like that. Hope Tuesday goes better, though.

Yes 5 year olds can be like that. Believe me I know. I have a 7 year old. I have had the joy of dealing with her tantrums at that age, and she still throws those kind of tantrums. Kudos to you for handling that so nicely. If it were me, I would not have treated that episode as a false alarm like you did. And yes I have been there. Very stressful.

I remember that one time I was babysitting these 3
girls, ages 9, 7 and 4. They were very good girls. I was about 14 then.
The 4 year old told me that her stomach was upset and I freaked out. I
said to her "what do you mean your stomach is upset?" like grilling the
poor kid! Thankfully all she had was some d and felt better after. Even
though I was able to handle that, I didn't want to babysit again! Just
in case the real thing were to happen in the future.

aw, im sorry that you got so freaked out. im also 14, but i know what *I* was like at 5 years old, and i know how good i was at fibbing.
Iv had two experiences with her now, when she's claimed that she's on the verge of vomiting. I even think the first time was genuine, which is even more unnerving.
I think something thats making me dread tuesday even more, is just knowing how crap she behaved on saturday..i didn't wanna have to phone her mum and dad but she gave me no option.!
Can i ask all you mums what you would do with a stroppy refusing 5 year old?
This kid is like putty in my hands on a good evening, but give her chocolate and she's like a forest fire..literally.
