Hi everyone! I know there have been posts on here about the dentist and lots of reassuring about how the dentist isn't that bad and will be okay. Well, I've had a cavity for months and haven't had it taken care of because it didn't hurt that bad, I'm broke and didn't want to pay for it, (although if it was thehusband or kids, it would have been done a long time ago) and I'm scared of the dentist.

Well, I didn't know that if your tooth absesses, not only does it hurt, but it makes you feel really icky and if it goes on untreated the infection can spread through your body and you can die. I've felt really sick for about a month and just in the past couple of days realized it's becaue of my tooth! So now it's Friday, I tried calling around for appointments today and didn't really get anywhere, was having panic attacks this afternoon, and didn't eat dinner. I don't know if I can get it taken care of tommorrow or not. I'll have to take antibiotics now too, and I really hate that.

I feel like a total idiot, and really wish I had listened to everyone and gone to the dentist a long time ago! The brief discomfort in the dental office would have been better than this!

awww Misty sorry to hear it has come to this... but at least this has taught you a lesson -- dont let the phobia interfere with your other health.

ive done stuff like that many times before... like ive run out of anti-d's and not gone to the doctors because emet/social phobia wudnt let me.... which made me worse and worse and was a real risk to my health.... will never ever do that again.

Sorry to hear about that. I am ok at the dentist and go regularly, but there were my years in college when I didn't go and am paying for it now, with my first cavity at age 29!!! I just had it filled last Friday! Really the dentist isn't that bad, it doesn't hurt at all and nothing makes you v*. I hope you get some relief real soon!

I tried to get an appointment today, couldn't get one, I'm going to have to wait until Monday. I guess I will know next time not to put something like this off!

I can relate to that story. I let a cavity go for too long because it didn't hurt that bad and I dread going to the dentist, not because of the work being done (I don't have much of a gag reflex), but because I don't like being reminded of how bad my teeth are. I eat too many soft foods, but I can't help it. Anyway, the infection was so bad that I had to have some of it squeezed out through the opening in my tooth to drain it. That was the worst pain I have ever experienced in my life and I was given novocaine beforehand. The dentist told me in another day I would have been hospitalized. I think I learned my lesson. At least, I hope I have. I still am terrified of being told how bad my teeth are when I go to the dentist. It makes me feel awful.

Hey, Misty, I totally feel for you and have been there also. You are sooo right, a few minutes of discomfort int he chair is worth it! Not only comfort wise but financially too, a cleaning every 6 mos or so and fillings are waaaay cheaper than all the craziness of root canals, crowns, extractions etc (am learning this the hard way lol) Anyhow I hope you get an appointment for Monday and can have it taken care of and be done with it. Do you have a dentist that you are comfortable w/? that makes all the difference in the world. Let us know how it goes! PS not to scare anyone but they are finding now that many illnesses/serious ones such as heart problems are being linked to unhealthy teeth. If thats not a good reason to go I don't know what is

Well, I went to the dentist, and the results were not good. I have to either have a root canal or get it pulled. I can't afford the root canal and was denied credit. My husband is out of work. I don't want to get it pulled and have an ugly gap in my teeth. And I was told the root canal would take an hour and a half. I can't even go shopping for that long without having a panic attack! I can't imaginesitting there in that chair with my mouth open while someone tortures my mouth for that long! They say the laughing gas is good stuff for your anxiety but I've never had it and don't know.

This has been the worst possible year for me. A year ago my husband was working a good job with benefits and we were looking at buying a house. Then he got fired and it's all gone downhill from there. I'm trying to keep a positive attitude but I've felt really ill for over a month now, I hardly eat, and I'm wearing down. I'm going to call around to some other dentists and see if there's anyone who'll finance me. This whole thing is not helping my depression at all!

I have had laughing gas and it worked well. It kind of makes you feel dazed. You know what is going on but it doesn't matter. I need it for routine work because I am scared of the dentist. Not like emet, but I did freak out the last time I was there, which is why I needed the nitrous oxide.

My husband has been seeing the dentist to treat the results of his neglect (1root canal, 2 crowns, 2 cleanings, and many fillings) and his dentist is so wonderful!. They have TVs in the ceilings and they give you headphones so you can listen to the TV (any channel you want) and you don't hear the drill.

I recommend finding a dentist that caters toward people with fears, they are out there.

    Good Luck. Carly
