I just went to the doctor and talked about my reflux and nausea. She scheduled an Upper GI Series. She told me they will make me drink something and then will Xray me. She said it only takes a few minutes. So I came home and got online and started talking to another emet from a different site and she said that they sedated her during hers and that it took about 40 minutes. IS THIS TRUE? Is she talking about an endoscopy because what I'm having done isn't an endoscopy. Will this stuff I have to drink make me nauseous? Has anyone here had an upper gi series? If so, tell me about it. How long it takes, if you're sedated and all that jolly crap. IM SCARED. I go on Tuesday at 8AM.

Umm...might it be barium? It's something you drink and it makes your bones/whatever more visible through the xrays.

You might want to ask your doctor these questions!

Sounds like a barium swallow to me. Like crazybeautiful said you drink this stuff (barium) which enables clear x-ray images. I have had a barium enema (up the bottom!) and that lasted about 30 minutes I guess. It was a bit uncomfortable cause they pump you with gas but I am sure a barium swallow will be painless. It is important to have it done if you have been advised to. Hope that helps a bit hon.

Welcome back! I've been wondering how you're doing!

My husband had to drink that barium stuff and get checked out, I think the most uncomfortable thing for him was drinking the stuff, it's like a thick malt but tasteless, so not easy or fun to drink. Everything else he said was painless, the barium stuff didn't make him nauseated, and he gets nausea/indigestion easily. He did have a nice healthy turd afterwards tho, but I remember him saying it wasn't urgent or diarhea, just pooped alot after.

Try not to worry yourself. You'll do great! Let us know what happens.

I had an upper Gi and had to drink the barium, I HATE DRINKING THINGS, but it really wasn't that bad and I didn't feel nauseated at all, but it did diagnose my nausea as reflux!! And made me feel a lot better mentally!!

well, I can tell youa few facts about it, I worked in the hospiital where they do these procedures, and Ive had it done myself.

an upper GI isnt bad at all. they make you drink this thich stuff ( thats the worst part) but it isn't really bad at all. then you wait and they take pictures of it travelling down your system. its pretty cool. my mom actually did it for me ( she's an xrazy tech) so I got to see the pictures.

they won't sedate you. thats a whole different procedure!

I've had about 5 upper GI series. You do not need to be sedated at all, actually, you are awake and can watch the entire procedure. It is noninvasive, pretty much it is essentially an X-ray. The thing you need to drink is barium. It is this white chalky liquid that shows up on x-rays. It will not make you sick at all. It tastes kinda gross, but that's it. Actually, recently I had one flavored (pineapple) it was a nice touch. It will though, make your poop hard and white. USually they suggest taking a laxative afterwards and/or drinking LOTS of water because it can constipate you. the GI series will help her see how bad your reflux is. You'll actually be able to see the liquid go down your throat, maybe come back up, and down into your stomach. It's pretty cool.

Good luck, nothing to worry about!

Yes I also had to drink the chalky stuff and it wasn't that bad, but I also had the camera down my throat because they couldn't detect my hernia with the liquid, and well I have to say that it was definately a worse experience, but it wasn't the worst either, anyways we'll talk about that one when it comes to that, and you probably won't have to.
