Hye. I dont know if any of you have been watching the news. But one of the main stories today is that anti-depressants are being over prescribed and there should be new laws on who should be given anti depressants.

What do you think about this??

I agree with it to some degree. They put me on so many different
meds...99% of them did nothing, and made me feel worse. Think
about it...how can a doctor, who knows nothing about you, perscribe you
a medication after talking to you for only 20 min? It shouldn't
be that way. People lived hundreds of years without
anti-depessents, and the human race survived. The world is
a crazier place now that we have all these so called "miracle
drugs". You can't go anywhere these days without meeting someone
who's on prozac, or zoloft, or xanax. Don't get me wrong, some
people lead better lives because of these drugs, but I think we need to
stop depending on medication to cure our problems. My mother's
friend was going through a divorce, and she flaunted to everyone that
she was on prozac. It's just an excuse to not get on with your
life. Sorry if I sound like I'm ranting, but I stopped taking
medication 3 years ago, and felt better when I did. Carrie

i kinda agree that anti-depressants are given out like vitamins. i always think depression or whatever should DEFENITELY be treated with some 'talking therapy' but to help someone get thru it anti-depressants can be used. i have to say i dont agree with people giving anti-dperesants if they've just lost a member of their family or smthing (have seen it happen) because ur grieving, its not illogical and u do not need medication for that!

i also think too many teenagers are given them. those who have had relationship problems and think they have depression, go to the Doc and get put on anti-d's... its silly.

my Doctor was quite good, she made sure i had been depressed for a long time... i said at least 2 years... and because of the length of my "issues" she thort in a way it wud save my life! which it probably did...

ok, am i ranting? lol sorry.

yeah i agree to - as i said in the other thread abt stopping cold turkey - its that they just dont have enough other resources. honestly - if i cld just buy effexor online as cheap as i get a prescription then id just come off them on my own. this 60 day reduction programme has been the best thing ive seen - no advice from a doctor has ever helped. i shouted at him too - saying ist it ironic that the reason im on these stupid drugs is coz ive been scared of getting sick and coming of them will make me sick and feel sick! yeah he didnt have much of an answer!

Yeh. I'd say that more focus should be more on therapy and support. Its easier for the NHS to give out tablets than to reffer people to a psychologist. I was given prozac and told that I had a 12 - 18 month wait to see a psycologist. Which is enough to make anyone depressed!! The answer is more psycologists!!! A position that I'm sure some people on this board may fill maybe even me!
