Default Does anyone else gag a lot?

Sooo I've had this problem since about 8th grade. When I get nervous I feel a gagging sensation and sometimes I actual do gag and being an emtaphobic this tends to just snowball into a complete panic attack which sucks. And I've been able to coop and deal with it by carrying a cold drink with me at all times. But latley I'm worried that that won't even help anymore and because of this havnt been leaving the house like i used to. And have classes coming up in the fall and would like to figure out another way to deal with this so i can get back out there. Also does anybody know if gagging precedes vomiting? Or is it a totally different thing. Or is gagging what makes you vomit? And does any body else have any similar issues?

Just a single gag doesn't really have anything to do with vomiting, something just triggered your gag reflex in your throat. Before you actually vomit, you will be gagging/retching a LOT and then your stomach will get involved a little later. I used to gag kind of often, but usually only when I was panicing REALLY bad, but a few times I just was totally fine, then sneezed and then gagged. I still have that tight throat feeling a lot too. But I am sure if these gagging episodes are short and isolated, you're not really likely to vomit. I would say go to the doctor and see what they say, maybe there is something they can do to help you. Mine just kind of went away eventually. Not the sensation that I'm about to gag, but I have stopped actually gagging.

So the gagging/retching feeling in your mouth or throat is what starts the vomiting cycle?

I gag every morning when I brush my teefers! I brush really far back on my tongue and it makes me gag a little bit. This has NEVER made me vomit. You can definitely gag without getting sick.

No. I don't think so. Well, it's not really "gagging" becuase I always think of gagging as being triggered by having something in the back of your mouth. But before you v*, you will "retch" for a while. But normally this is after your stomach has been turning and upset, not just out of the blue like your gagging. It doesn't have anythign to do with your throat.

I gag when I brush my teeth often in the morning too. I don't worry about it, because I do it so often.

I, personally, don't gag nearly ever. But, one of my very good friends has this issue (lucky her she isn't emet and it's more of an annoyance to her than anything) and she carries menthol/mint cough drops and those really strong Altoid mints with her when she has to go out. She says that when she feels like she is going to gag it's like a tickle in the back of her throat and the mint helps to sooth that, almost as if she were going to cough.

This might not apply to you, but if it does then I hope it helps.

It could maybe be panic? I sometimes get a gagging sensation in the back of my throat and I know it's anxiety. I had gagged alot before in 2008 when I had food posioning. I wasn't sick tho. It was still horrible and made my phobia worse.
Sometimes I worry I'm going to gag when I brush my teeth because of association with bending over the sink as you would a toilet if you were ill. Mind over matter though.

This is what keeps me from seeing the dentist often. I am not scared of the drill. I can deal with the pain of the shot in my gums to become numb (though I do tear up a bit), but I absolutely cannot stand getting xrays done on my teeth. They still use the cardboard/whatever ones that they shove in the back of your mouth and they always, always make me gag. Unlike some people here for some reason it only takes me gagging like once or twice before I actually throw up.
