Default Freaking out because Mom is sick

Hey guys, I just signed up for this site.

I just learn about emetophobia and was like, "whoa, there's actually a name for what's wrong with me?!" I am actually a lot better than I was when I was younger, I can usually talk about it and even see it with minimal uneasiness. Working in a school has actually helped big time, because kids throw up all the time, lol. Pretty much as long as I don't smell it I'm fine. But that's only if its unlikely that its contagious. If someone is sick and it looks like its a bug that I might get, that's when I really start flipping out, like I am right now because my mom has suddenly come down with something.

It makes me almost envious because she's throwing up and has diarrhea but acts like she's perfectly fine. I feel bad because she's sick, but am close to an anxiety attack hoping its not something I can catch. I keep trying to rationalize that since she doesn't seem ill, just nauseous, that maybe its not a bug, but its not helping much. Plus she borrowed my Mylanta, which I take tiny sips of when I'm feeling sick to my stomach and is the only thing that really helps, and now that I'm feeling miserable I wish I had it but don't want to ask for it back.

I hate being so paranoid, it makes me feel like such a weirdo and a hypochondriac (which I guess I am) whenever I've tried to tell anyone how badly it effects me when I even just think I might be sick, they either don't get it or are just like, "yeah I hate getting sick too".

In the meantime, I feel horribly nauseous, and I'd give anything for a "quick cure". Or at least something to get my mind off it.

i've tried to find some distractions to get my mind off the n and carry on with a semi normal life.......some are good and easy ....some are just weird. i play trivia online in a chat room......really takes concentration, i knit while watching tv, do crossword puzzles........the weirder things are like i pinch myself....i do this mostly if i'm driving somewhere and start to panic.....tiny pinches (that usually leave a bruise)...usually do the tops of my legs which will be covered by my pants......the pain distracts me from the panic. i'm also a hair "twister".....and a smoker.

i say whatever it takes to get me where i need to be......work, dinner out, movie ,etc......

i also have a prescription for phenergan for the really really bad times......thankfully this only happens a few times a year.....cause it definitely puts me to sleep for a whole day and i get nothing accomplished.

i've had alot less anxiety since reading and posting on this forum..
i hope you find some help and comfort here....

I felt the same way, I think it was 02 or 03 when I stumbled upon the name and realised it was what was wrong with me. I always just thought I was being weird.
