hey!
i was considering something today, when my mum was complaining of feeling stuffed up..
a family friend had told her to sniff lukewarm water with a teaspoon of salt in it..so that it would supposedly clear her nose.
my mum absolutely hated this, said it felt exactly the same as the experience you get when you go under water without holding your nose..
however, it made me think, because my mum has what she describes as an "aversion" tovomiting.
point being, i always used to despise going swimming, because of the sensation i experienced when water went up my nose..it always reminded me of being sick.
im also like this with pain, and i was wondering whether there is any connection between how you deal with a physical pain, and how you cope with a fear..
i have a "thing" about pain..i can't laugh if i have injured myself (ironically?!) wheras some people can dismiss an injury as soon as it's occurred..
it seems to me,as though people who can deal with pain quite accordingly, are less likely to become phobic?
let me know what you think..i could be completely wrong

to be honest, I dont really understand your thread, lol. Ofcourse if i cut my arm, my first impluse isnt to laugh.... haha Im sorry, Im lost!

I think people who are more anxious experience a higher degree of pain than calmer people - thats kind of shown with a midwife using natural childbirth, rather than the mother using medicaton. a midwife helps the mother understand and deal with her pain so it is berable, and she is more calm. A more anxious mother may have more pain and compliactions. Does this make any sence...

yeahh that makes sense.lol..hmm, i guess what im trying to say is, those who are more affected by pain, are more likely to be phobic??
putting that into context it sounds stupid..but it sorta makes sense

I actually have a very high tolerance to pain. I had surgery a couple of years ago and didn't take one pain pill after. When I was a kid I had tonsilitis so many times my tonsils were mostly eaten away but I never, not one time, complained that my throat hurt. A year ago I had an ear infection but my ear never hurt. It is kinda strange. I do have a BIG aversion to taking pain pills because of the chance of it making me sick, I think maybe that is why I can handle pain so well. I know I have to deal with it so I do. In a way I think my phobia is the reason I can handle pain.

Just my 2 cents...but...I have a high tolerance for pain...in fact...the only kind of pain that really bothers me is stomach pain. What I think is that when I do have any kind of stomach pain my fear of being sick makes the pain seem worse than it actually is. Fear heightens pain...the anxiety that something is bad or harmful actually makes it seem more intense that it actually is. Well, that is what I have found to be true for me, anyway. Pain is what it is...your body's way of signaling to your brain that something is wrong. But each person perceives different kinds of pain according to their own experiences and make-up.
It\'s all right to have butterflies in your stomach. Just get them to fly in formation.

Strange...

I am actually happy when I get hurt, because it completely takes my mind of of my stupid ass phobia! I have an extremely high pain tolerence. I broke my leg in several different areas last year and I had do go a week with it just in ace bandages. I was scared at first to take Vicaden, so iwent a long while just taking the pain.

I understand the connection you are making, and it may be true for a lot of you, but for me it is opposite.

Also if i get a bad head cold or non-stomach flu, I am soo happy (while being miserable) because I know that god wouldn't be cruel enough to strike you with the stomach bug on top of it.

I have a fairly high tolerance to pain, I suppose. I guess it all has to
do with what areas of the body has more nerves, but I can really
hurt myself physically and not really feel it as intense pain anywhere
except my upper-sides of my torso, and on the back of my upper
legs. Heh, in this assembly thing for the whole school that we had to
go to on Friday, I scraped a bunch of skin off my finger, for I was
nervous because of the 1000+ people in the room. Of course it's a
bloody mess now, but it doesn't really hurt all that much.

I too have quite a high tolerance for pain. The one kind of pain that I just cannot tolerate is the pain I get from a migraine. I think that the main reason I can't tolerate that is because not only is the pain itself excrutiating, but that it comes along with near blindness, sensitivity to light, noise, and smells, and also... nausea. When I get a migraine I just curl up into a ball and cry and pull my hair or shake my head... it's horrible (

Other than that though, I tend to do relatively well with pain...I mean, pain is pain and all of it sucks, but I think it takes going through absolutely agonizing pain(for me the migraines)to realize that most ofthe pain I experienceisn't too horrible.

I have an amazing tolerance to pain!!! I have had IBS pains that have felt as bad as labor, and I just sit and smile....no one knows there is even anything wrong. In fact, I had 4 out of 5 childbirths naturally. With my 2nd child, I told the doc just to stitch me up without the numbing meds, simply because I was tired. The nurse said I was crazy. I told her, "well, it feels like heaven compared to what I just went through"...lol.

I guess when pain comes along, I feel like I have to deal with it, so I do. With emet, gosh...I dunno why it is so hard to deal with.

I have a great tolerance for pain, except nausea. I'm afraid of pain, which is maybe why I have such a high tolerance, becuase I'm expecting everything to be so much worse than it actually is.... I broke my tailbone (OUCH) last February, and that hurt so bad, but I actually usually work thru pain, if that makes sense. THings still hurt but I can go on with life.

I always thought I had a high pain tolerance - me and my sister (who was bigger and stronger than me used to have competitions who could hurt each other the most and I always won!). But last year when i came off the anti depressants I found that the slightest bump or knock would cause me to shake with pain. It was as if the anti depressants numbed me because now i am back on them again I hardly feel any pain.
Today is the tomorrow I dreaded yesterday and I\'m ok.

I have an incredible pain tolerance, at least for some pain (not things like menstrual pain, for example) I am also a self injurer and can hack myself tobits and hardly feel it. Sometimes I make things out of strong wire mesh, and just shred my hands on the process, without noticing until there's blood all over the work site.

And it goes without saying, I'm very phobic, though I'm a thousand times better then when I was a kid.

So far in my life, the only kinds of pain that I become a baby about are headaches and any kind of pain in my mouth... like canker sores and such. Of course I become a baby when it comes to nausea too, but that's completely different. But, I'm also only ninteen, so I haven't experienced child birth yet! Oy vey!

The only time I have ever had a problem with pain was when I had a
toothache last April. I swore I was going to smash my head
through the mirror in the bathroom. But it was cool because for
that horrible week, not once did my phobia get the best of me. There
was one night, when the pain from my tooth was so unbearable, that I
actually would have rather gotten sick, then deal with the pain in my
tooth. No kidding..I said it to my boyfriend. It was that
bad. Carrie

Wow lots of you have high pain tolerance! I dont think I do, but Im not sure tho, I did have my wisdom teeth (all 4 out, and were impacted and had to have surgery) and I did not take any of the prescribed painkillers, and one nite the pain was pretty tough, but I was ok andjust worked thro it. I dont know if that counts, I wish I coudl like "compare" pain to see if I really did tolerate a lot or not.

pain is almost a distraction from nausea, i find that *so* odd..
i'd much rather feel some physical pain than lie down with nausea (i really dont like doing that)
it's almost like waiting for it to happen when you lie down with nausea, bleugh..

i dont think i have much tolerance for pain. i have ibs and migranes and when i have an attack i go crazy. i cant cope with the pain. i also had braces which gave me constant toothaches. However a few months ago i dislocated my shoulder and had to go to hospital. The doctors tried to give me really storng pain killers and anaesetic but i refused both because i was scared of getting sick. the doctors thought i had gone mad because i refused. i had my shoulder set back with nothing and the pain was unbelievable. so i think i have a low pain tolerance, but i would much rather have pain then v* or nausea
