Hello. I'm new here, so I apologize if this has been over-asked, but I was just wondering... Does "Emetophobia" pertain to those who are just afraid of themselves throwing up, or can it also mean afraid of others doing it? Because I must admit, I'm equally afraid of both.

I am also equally afraid of both. To me, emetophobia is just a fear of throwing up, of you, or of anyone else. Welcome to the site! I'm Anya, I'm 14, and if you have any questions, feel free to ask!

    <3 Anya--

Hello, welcome to the site. I am much more afraid of someone else doing it, I think because I am very good at controlling whether I do it or not. I cannot control, nor do i know when someone else will do it. That's what scares me the most- other people.

Hello and wellcome. Yes, I'm afraid of both myself and others being sick, although I'm most afraid of v*bugs because I can catch it too; if someone throws up because of alcohol it doesn't bother me so much. But I agree with rcurran, since I'm also very good at controllingmyself but can't control others. When I lived at home my little sister caught every bug that was going around and infected everyone in family but me. Weird.

    welcome to our family!!

i think the way people see it is u r classed emetophobic if u:

1.) PRIMARILY fear urself vomiting... <-- thats me!!

    2.) PRIMARILY fear others vomiting...

so, ur afraid of both.. just often ur more afriad of one than the other.

altho, i do have 2 friends who r bulimic, so naturally are NOT afriad of themselves v*ing AT ALL. but r deadly afriad of others doing it. altho, one of them says that shes OK with doing it herself, as long as she was the one thats caused it. isnt the human mind fascinating?

    Hi and welcome,

Emetophobia can and does refer to any irrational fear of vomiting, whether it's oneself or others. I was only afraid of others (I thought) until I was well on my way to being treated successfully...then I realized that I really only feared others because subconsciously I thought it would make ME sick (in "public"). I wonder if that's at the root of everyone's fear of others...hmmm...

Also, the fear of being sick in public, but not in private can also be emetophobia.

    Hi,

I'm new too but this is something that I've struggled with for as long as I can remember. Of course I hate to vomit but it's something I can deal with because it rarely happens. I can't stand, however, to be anywhere near someone elsewho is vomiting.

My boyfriend went out with some friends for drinks last weekend and I asked him to please not drink much because I didn't want him to be sick. While he was out the only thing I could think about was how I hoped he didn't drink too much. Fortunately, he understands my phobia and is very respectful. We're having a New Year's party this weekend and I'm just praying that no one will get sick. It makes me nauseated just thinking about it.

My question is, how do y'all deal with this? It just seems so irrational to live my life afraid of vomit. Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

    Ali

Think I have to agree with Sage. I tend to get grossed out if some one v* but if I know its from drinking too much, then I am ok.

If I don't know what its from, then I am afraid I can catch it, which leads to the fear I will get sick.

I think its all a nasty little circle of fear and panic for all of us.

For me, I am petrified of seeing or hearing someone vomiting; petrified of myself being sick and petrified of catching the bug

For help with this, check out the "treatments" thread. Read through all the sticky posts at the top, and print out for future reference.

    Good luck!
