Unhappy My sister threw up all through the night, what could it be?

As a emetophobic it was such a horrible experience for me. The last time my sister V, was one year ago when we went on holiday, I was sick that time too. My family doesn't get sick that often.

So last night all of a sudden, 1 hour after dinner, my younger sister tells my mum, her stomach is feeling very strange and she thought she was hungry. So she ate some rice pops and milk. 20 mins later she goes to the bathroom and I can hear here her just moving around. I didn't hear the actual event, only a loud cough which I don't mind, its the gagging that I can't stand. I was getting nervous and told her did you throw up. She said Yes I did but I feel a bit better now.

My mum, sister all have one fairly large bedroom. So my sister sleeps on the top bunk. I was getting so nervous because I could hear my sister tossing and turning in her bed, whimpering because had stomach pain as well as nausea. I just wanted her to V because I hated the build up to all of this. Then my mum went to the bathroom and thats when my sister V in a bag in the dark. I ran out of the room, stood in the passage way with my IPod in my hand, listening to loud music to avoid hearing the sound. My sister asks me "turn on the light!, I can't see anything. So I quickly turned on the light without looking or paying any attention. All her dinner came out.

Then another 2 more times she V in the bathroom but she said it was only water and even though her stomach is empty she doesn't know why she feels like gagging and her stomach hurts.

The whimpering, soft groaning continued through the night. Because we share a bedroom my mum didn't get any sleep. I didn't get my sleep worrying about my sister's ordeal, my muscles ached because I so tense in bed. I also had to have my IPOD ready when my ready to V.

So from 11:30PM to 8:45 am, no sleep for me. I just lay there in bed but I wanted to go to sleep but just couldn't .

Its the morning now, my mum said for my sister to stay home because she is sick but my sister said she felt a bit better but she still feels "bad". So now she is at school and I don't know how Im going to get through the rest of the day, especially the night time because I want to sleep and I can't run away from this. We all also have a small house so I can't just go and hide in another room.

What can make my sister stop being sick?

It's hard to say but it does sound like either food poisoning or a virus of some sort. Did she have the runs as well or just vomiting?

i think you coped amazingly well, especially as you saw it happen so well done!

Just keep your hands clean before eating or preparing food as a precaution. if she's tossing and turning again tonight and keeping you awake could you take your quilt and go and sleep on the settee? It sounds like she is over the worst of it now though.

Thanks for your support. I didn't see it happen but I did hear it a few times, I tried blocking the noise with music and that helped a little. She doesn't have the runs just V, stomach pain and feeling a little cold.

The bag which she V in is actually sitting in the bedroom bin, I had this weird tendency to glance at it and I saw nothing. I told my mum if she could empty the bin, she said she would but she was in a rush to go to work so its still there. I don't like seeing the bag as its a reminder of what happened so I just ripped out some old magazine pages and just put it over the bin so it is out of sight and out of mind lol.

My mum gave my sister some home made saline water to drink and apparently this made her feel slightly better and I don't think she has been sick in the morning. She does look a bit pale and rundown though which makes me nervous as I don't know whether it will happen again.

Right now my sister is at school, she will come home early. And Im afraid of being in the same room as her so I just go and watch TV, listen to music etc, make up a convo with my dad who is loud and will not stop talking. So thank god for that .

The thing which Im worried about the most is

    a) If she will V again throughout the day
    b) The Night time, people feel more nauseaous in the night because they are laying down. Its worser because everything is so quiet so even if im in the other room, some noise will still get through the walls.

I was actually thinking of the sleeping on the settee or on the floor with a mattress if my sister is still not better.

Ok well, first off, unless it's an expensive or nice bin i'd just put the bin in the wheelie bin and get rid - unless you will get into trouble that is, or, put a black bag over the top of the bin then turn it upside down so the contents falls into the black sack without you having to see, then lift the bin off, ties the black bag then bleach the bin out afterwards.

Yes she might indeed vomit, but you sound like you've got a strategy worked out with your ipod and nattering to your dad etc so just do what you did last night and you WILL get through it.

Lying down doesn't really have much effect on nausea unless you had acid indigestion or something where it would be preferable to be sitting up, i think it's more to do with the fact that most illnesses feel worse at night anyway and alot of emets feel sick in the night due to worry!

i think if she's still being sick at bedtime, then yes why not sleep on the settee for the night, but if the vomiting has stopped then I think you should at least try and sleep in your own bed otherwise your own bed will become a scary place to be and you don't want to end up sleeping permanently on the settee for months - trust me I did that and did my back in!

If it is any consolation I think she will not be sick anymore. If she was still nauseous enough to throw up there is no way she would make it through a day at school. I had noro two months ago and it was very obvious to me when I wasnt going to throw up anymore. I have to say though, she shouldnt have gone to school because that is exactly how these things get spread around!

Thanks everyone for your kind words and support. Definetly makes a difference when I am reassured here .

My mum was the one to take the metallic bin out. So its done and dusted with a fresh new bag inside the bin. The V was inside a carrier bag which was placed in the bin which had its own carrier bag so it was pretty intact and the bin was clean.

So this is what happened yesterday when my sister came home. By the way she just turned 18 and has her A Level exams coming up in a months time. So my mum is worried because she doesn't want for her to fall ill as it will be tough on her to revise.

She came home and bought Lemon Lemsip which her friend had kindly gave her. At that time she looked better, she said she felt very cold , she ate lunch and went to sleep at 5PM. I was watching TV with my family and I heard her V in the bathroom at 9:30 PM. TV sound drowned it out. . After a while, she ate her dinner along with Lemsip, saline water & a raw piece of ginger.

My mum, myself and my sister all went to bed at 11PM. Of course this was the most anxious time for me, I had myself ready with the IPOD by my bedside. We all slept like a baby and my sister did not V!. The medicine did work.

As everyone has said on this thread, that the V was probally over that night. So it was definetly true. I am glad the worst part is over and I think my sister is recovering from this horrible ordeal. She didn't go to school today but I guess thats because she felt lazy having gone the other day.

Glad everythings settled down now! You say she was drinking saline water though - do you mean as in salt and water? Because drinking salty water can actually induce vomiting! The ginger was a good idea I'm really pleased you went to bed too and that it all worked out ok and you slept well. I think you've done really well through all this! i hope your sister is feeling 100% again soon x

Salt and sugar water can help to replace fluids lost through v'ing or d. You only need something like 1/2 a teaspoon of salt in a litre of water, nowhere near enough to induce v'ing!

I think it was saline water, my mum said she mixed in alot of sugar and just a tiny bit of salt.

Thanks everyone again. My sister is eating normal foods but less of it as its only been 2 days since she V. Everytime I hear her cough loudly, I jump though & get paranoid thinking its happening all over again. But I can rest assured that, today I will definetly have a good nights sleep.

Heck, even when anyone in my family coughs, I get nervy as I think they are going to V .
