Exclamation Gotta go hopsital soon for surgery (terrified)

hi, i have to go in hopsital on December 18th for oral surgery, and have to be put under general aesthetic, and 1 side effect can be *V* ikno not everyone gets it, but i am so scared, my surgeon said to me that about 1 person in 6 months that he had dealt with has got sick, i am not the sort of person to feel sick tho, like i dont get travel sick at all, the doctor gave this as an example, also i have a huge anxiety disorder and i am soo scared of hospitals, they have said they are gunna try and get me my own side room becuase i could not cope on a ward epecially as i dont know if other people are going to *v*, also they siad my mum can stay over, as she is a big source in reassuring me all these years while i have this annoying phobia, i was just wondering what other peoples experiences were like, how they felt after surgery and just before, and how quickly did the general wear off, dont know if it helps but i am 17 by the way,

any help, would be greatly appreciated

Im 16 and recently had major surgery which required a ton of anaesthetic and further drugs like morphine, etc. and I didn't get sick once - and they said even with the amount I have not many people do. Also, check with your parents if they have ever had any side effects to it cause that's what they asked me and I assume that means it gives some indication. It is true that people who get motion sickness/weaker stomach is more likely to v* from it and so I'm sure you will be absolutely fine! Keep in mind they have a TON of anti emetics which they can give you and in my case they said if the worse comes to the worst and I feel like I'm going to v*, they can quickly pump my stomach. Not saying you necessarily would want to, but just to let you know that there are so many ways to tackle it if you were faced with n* so no need to worry

When I had my wisdom teeth out, I was completely fine when I woke up. I just felt a bit dizzy and lightheaded for a while afterwards. I didn't feel ill afterwards at all. I'm the same as you though, I don't get motion sickness or anything like that. I'm sure you'll be fine.

Don't worry, I had the same fear this past summer when I had my wisdom teeth taken out. Just make sure you don't eat or drink anything (no water, no gum, no mints, nothing) after midnight the day before your surgery.

When I arrived at the dentist's office the morning of my surgery, my mom told the head assistant my fear of getting sick, and the assistant said that it's highly unlikely that any sort of nausea or *V* will occur after I wake up, but she suggested (since I was so worried) that I ask them to add in some Zophram (something along those lines, lol can't remember the exact name!) to the anesthetic; the Zophram prevents nausea and *V*.

When I woke up from the surgery, my head did feel heavy and my body felt light, but I had absolutely no nausea whatsoever. I healed quickly and the pain wasn't that bad at all, I didn't even need to take a painkiller! Some advice on those prescription painkillers, though, some of them may cause nausea or *V*, so you may just want to either tough it out or take some over-the-counter ibuprofen (not Alieve, because that's a blood-thinner and you'll need your blood to clot so your post-surgery wounds will heal quickly).

    You'll be fine, don't stress!

Morphine can make you v, especially when given through an IV, because it goes straight into the blood. Injections aren't quite so bad. Oral morphine might make you n, but because it is absorbed much slower, if you do start to feel n you can take an antiemetic. Tramadol and codeine are other oral painkillers they might give you when you get out, or if you don't get on with morphine, the max dose might make you feel a bit spacey but not n. Also I was told always take them with paracetamol (acetaminophen) because it enhances the effect and so you can try a smaller dose.

Yes morphine can make you v* but that does not mean it will! Even in the IV there is still only a small chance if your family haven't reacted to it or the anaesthetics. If you don't feel like taking other medication if you are n they can give it in suppository form (yuck, I know but better than v*). Also, do you know how long the surgery is? That also can give some indication of how much n* you may experience.

The first time i had surgery i did v* from the anatheisa but thats because they gave me no anti emet drugs before hand. So the last time i told them i was emet and very scared and they gave me 2 anti emet drugs and a motion sickness patch behind my ear and i was fine. So ask for some meds before and you will be good.

Hi, I know the feeling. A couple years ago I had to have my wisdom teeth surgically removed. I had to be fully put under.

This was the first time for me to get put under anasthetic, and I was very very anxious about it. I actually forgot to ask about anti-emetics.

After I woke up, my mouth was packed with cotton and stuff; and I felt totally 'out of it' so to speak.

As I was getting more and more alert, I became aware of my stomach. It felt totally normal and calm after fasting for a day. Not even a hint of nausea. If it were not for my mouth being full of cotton and string - I could have easily eaten anything I wanted!

Never once did I have any feelings of sickness after that surgery.

I'm an adopted child so I can't ask mom and dad if they had problems. I do know for a fact that I'm not one who gets sick easily, so I shouldn't have expected this to be a problem. And it wasn't.

Hope you find peace and the operation makes you feel better in the end!

    Sincerely,
    David

the surgery is gunna last about half an hour they said, i will be in a great deal of pain after because i am having a malignant tumor removed, but its only 1-2cm so he said it shouldn't take long, might just put up with the pain because dont want any medicine that will make me *V* or feel *n* he said while i am having surgery they are also gunna numb the area with local aesthetic so it wont feel bad when i come round, tbh with all the crap going on atm with my health and the surgery, its only the thought of *v* that scares me, but at least afer the surgery i shouldnt have to worry about it again because it will be done with, god just bring on the new year ( didnt think i would be excited at the prospect of new year, it used to be my worst fear with all the drunk ppl but now totally looking forward to this one thanks for helping ppl

Whenever I have had surgery, I have asked for a medication so I dont get sick. They were very willing to give it to me, and I was just fine. They put it in my I.V.

Oh, wow it's good you are getting the malignant area removed.

Depending on your pain tolerance, you may very well not need any additional medications after the surgery.

One thing to keep in mind, pain medications work best when you take it before the pain gets unbearable. I would really recommend you get the pain medication prescription filled and have it available in case you need it.

    Sincerely,
    David

You'll be ok! No matter what drugs they give you, emetophobics don't vomit from them! Just let them know you have a phobia of vomiting and they'll give you some drugs so you don't. Good luck!

My brother has the weakest stomach ever. Cannot hold his liquor, etc... anyway he recently got his wisdom teeth pulled & had all the drugs & he was absolutely fine. No n*, no v*, no NOTHING. He's had many surgeries actually & every time, no other effects.
The more you panic, the worse you'll feel. Try & think positively. "I'm not going to be sick, I'm going to make myself feel sick if I keep thinking this way."

I have never even felt sick from it and I don't know anybody who has! And they will give you anti-emetics.
When I had five teeth removed, I didn't even need to take all the pain pills. Try not to worry, it won't do you any good. Stay positive.

I had my wisdom teeth out a few years ago and I was worried about V* after waking up too. However, I didn't! It all went smoothly and when I woke up I felt sort of weird and n* but I drank some water and ate breakfast finally and it went away. Certain painkillers can make you feel n* but mine didn't. I had hydrocodones and it was fine, they made me tired but that's it. Good luck! I am new to this by the way!
