    Question Do you believe...

That we can force ourselves not throw up? That there's been times when we should have been sick, but forced ourselves not to?

I find it interesting how some people get sick really often, like my friend is sick at least once a month (she can't handle pain and is sensitive to flus etc) whereas my dad threw up once in the 30 years my mom knew him and it was because he was totally drunk. My dad isn't even that cautious nor is he emet. I'm hoping I can be like my dad lol!

    I believe this.
I can't count the time's where my stomach was truely upset, and I was aware that this wasn't just my anxiety, but after hard coaxing, and after a long while, the ill feelings simply dissipate.
But it's the complete opposite with some people. Some people who tell themselves that they aren't going to be sick, end up becoming sick anyway, because they're thinking about it so much.
I guess it just depends on mental strength, or what kind of person you are, or something like that.

McMorbid - Im just wondering where exactly 'The most isolated province in Canada is'?

To answer the original question, I really hope its a case of mind over matter! There have been many times when Ive been totally convinced Im going to get sick and I havent. Perhaps someone who isnt afraid of v* would have given in to the feeling whereby we emet fight it with everything we've got. Saying that Im sure that if our body really really needed to v* we wouldnt have too much choice - unfortunately!

I think it's kind of a forcing, but it's more the desperation of doing whatever it takes not to. Most people would probably give in, but not us emets! For example, one evening I started feeling TERRIBLE n* followed by d*, followed by my whole family getting the same sv* and v* - except for me! I put it down to careful control of breathing and movements. I was in a kind of trance not to, just staring at the same spot with no movements or talking. However sadly there are probably cases when that wouldn't work...

i would normally agree to this question. i have had bugs and svs and fought off horrible n* and it would eventually pass. but recentley i have done all the breathing and calming techniques and i just started retching. i lost complete control over my body and it just happened. i even took an anti emetic at one stage and it still happened!! i think when our bodies really need to do it, they dont have a choice but to say, im sorry but i have to. that was a very bad virus though. there was no physical or mental way i could of stopped it from happening that time. so not necessarily can you fight it. depends whats causing you to feel sick i guess

when you say that, do you mean someone who already has a bug, or someone who just may be worrying as a general anxiety thing?

I beleive that you can suppress yourself from vomiting; to a certain extent. We're all differently able to do this.

Some people are more vomiting prone than others. One who is already unlikely to vomit (due to their biological makeup) could probably muster enough willpower to not vomit under most situations.

I've had 2 severe tests where I was able to NOT vomit; when my peers did vomit. I know that after years of emetophobia and building up the willpower not to vomit - I was able to keep my cool during these times.

    Sincerely,
    David

    Interesting responses

I don't know... I just feel like maybe over the past 9 years (9 years ago is when I was last sick,) I've had some really, really wicked stomach aches, nausea, d* etc... I know I have stomach issues but I think that there's been some times when potentially people would v* but I never did.. I personally believe that if you fight it hard enough then you won't v* because my brother swore that one time he was almost going to v* (he could "feel" it,) and he held it down.... I don't know.

I had a sv in highschool. I was about to vomit..I was really hot, my mouth started to water. I was in the bathroom and a tiny bit came up, but I managed to force it back down and I just spit out the little bit. That's the closest i have been to vomiting in years and I managed not to. Even though I didn't vomit completely, I actually felt better like i had? It was weird.

I think the answer to this is both yes and no. It depends on why you're nauseous. For example, if you feel sick to your stomach because you're having a panic attack then yes, I believe you can suppress it and not vomit. This isn't the only situation in which you can do this.

BUT if you have a serious case of food poisoning, I don't think there's anything you can do to not vomit. Not even taking the strongest anti-emet medication. I truly believe that in this kind of situation, your body is going to do what it needs to do to get the "poison" out of you and it will bypass everything else, even meds, to do it, because life always finds a way. In this case, not vomiting might be life-threatening so your body's going to do what it needs to do to get you back to health and keep you alive.

Just my opinion from personal experience. I may be wrong.

One time I had food poisoning & I was up all night with d* & a sore stomach but never v*d. I don't think it was that serious or something though... I had some bad chicken at this restaurant, I knew it was bad but my friends parents were paying & it was a really really expensive restaurant and I felt horrible for complaining... I probably should have for the sake of my health but I ate it anyway & felt horrible after about four hours. But yes I know what you mean, if your body wants to vomit enough, it will vomit.
