Lightbulb Is there anyone else like me?

Yes, I hate vomiting. But I am not terrified of it. I try to avoid it. But I don't go out of my way not to eat certain things because I am afraid of vomiting or whatever.

I'm absolutely terrified of seeing or hearing other people vomit though. While going through the posts, most people seem to be scared of catching viruses or losing control or skipping meals. Just wondering if anyone else is like me where you are not too bothered about vomiting yourself, but freak out over other people doing it?

I feel like a bit of a minority!!

I am terrified of it, but my mom seems to be more scared of other people who might vomit.

I'm like you. I can handle getting sick myself, I hate it, but I don't freak out. It doesn't terrify me. It's other people getting sick that terrifies me.

I am definitely more panicked if someone else is sick.

At my worst point I was also only afraid of someone else vomiting. I have one or two clients who are like that too. It doesn't matter. If anything, it's a bit easier to treat!

Sage, how do you treat it? I'm doing CBT, and I mean, I think it's helping a bit... but I feel like my therapist doesn't really know how to deal with it... Is there anything I should suggest to her or anything?

Nope, I'm the same exact way...while I get some anxiety when I feel nauseous and having to do it myself....I would much prefer (for lack of a better word) do it then hear or see anybody else doing it....for example, when my husband gets sick, I freak. I put up the TV loudly, I put my MP3 player on full blast in my ears so I don't hear anything. That makes me the most nevous when other people get sick. I could actually crawl into a corner in the fetal position...

Unfortunately, I'm both afraid of it myself and seeing or hearing others do it. More afraid of it myself. I'm afraid of others more if I think I could catch what they have. But for instance, today I went to the fair with some friends. My friends Dad said he might go on the rides but he was bringing a plastic bag in case he got sick. I immediately wondered whether I should even go or not, I did not want to witness that or be around that. But I had my xanax with me and knew that it wouldn't be something I would catch and I could walk away from it if I had to. So yea, I'm afraid of both, but deathly afraid of doing it myself. Isn't it funny how people experience it differently?

EXACTLY like me!!! I also use earplugs sometimes if it's night time.

I feel a little better knowing a few of you are like me! I hate feeling like I am the only one who is scared of people vomiting.

For example, I never use public toilets. It really is most inconvenient, but I would rather hold in my pee for hours until I have stomach pains and wait until I get home, rather than use a public toilet where there is a risk someone might be vomiting. How stupid is that? I never really thought about the public toilet thing until my cousin told me a story about a girl who was making herself sick in a bathroom at LAX airport... if she knew about my phobia she might not have told me the story lol.

I'm not sure. First of all I hate the sound of it. It's just such a gut wrenching, horrible noise. I hated it even before I had the phobia.

Secondly, I hate how it looks. I don't know why at all. When I was little, I used to be scared of blood and guts in TV shows. When I saw it, my heart would start racing and I would get such a pang of fear and disgust that I immediately had to look away. I no longer have that feeling with blood and guts, but I get that feeling if I look at someone vomiting or if I see a picture of someone vomiting. I just can't look at it. It freaks me right out. It's horrible.

Not sure why I feel this way, but that's as good a description as I can come up with for how I feel about it. Well, I'm sure I could describe it better, but I'm sure you don't want to read a whole page of writing.

I'm definately afraid of seeing it or hearing it. I will probably never go on a plane again. I was on a plane once and my experience was really nice(before I had the phobia) but now I realize how many people get sick on planes. I can use public restrooms but as soon as I walk in I'm scoping out the whole place. I'm cautious of who's in there and I'm ready to bolt if anything I don't like is going on in there. I open the doors to stalls slowly in case it's disgusting. I've never had a bad experience in a public restroom, thank goodness.

I am more terrified of myself being sick then seeing someone else become sick. My only fear about someone else being sick is that the sight of it might make me want to vomit.

I used to be horrified to hear someone vomit until I moved in with my very sick flatmate who vomits all the time. Now I can hear it no problem but if I saw I... I don't want to think about it. But I am ultimately more afraid of vomiting myself. I'm afraid that f I see it happen, I will get sick too.

Oh god.. I have a flight from London to Australia coming up in less than 3 weeks. I have made this journey 7 times before and never had any problems, but I'm terrified of having a sick person next to me. I don't know what I would do if someone started throwing up in a bag right next to me. And I would feel like an absolute knob asking to be moved elsewhere because I am scared of vomit.

I'm afraid of v*ing, too, but the worse of it is to see/hear someone v*. That will always make me spiral out of control.
