Hello all!!!!!
About this Purell/ hand sanitizer thing (sorry to keep talking about it) ------ This was awful news to all of us EMETSwho use it as "peace of mind".The news ruined my day.&n bsp; If you haven't read it - I am talking about the Matt Lauer story and another about Purell.
IREALLY started reading and even have a call into the CDC (I think someoneelse has done this too.)
I found a site where there is a scientistat a university in Montana that has been studying the Norwalk and similar viruses. These nasty bugs aremutationally ingenious.Number 1 - they ARE viruses which aresmaller, yet stronger than bacteria. Bacteria for sure can be killed with antibiotics, alcohol, bleach, etc.
These Norwalk (stomachviruses) have a protective protein coating around them. Isaw a picture of the virus and it is round. The coating is only shed once it is in the intestines. At that point the virus starts doing it's thing. It can then multiply and cause the problems that we are all so fond of.
From thisinfo I would conclude that, THAT is why handwashing is moreeffective at irradicating these disgusting creatures --------they just get washed off ---- protective coating and all. Send them on down the drain. Just an educated or maybe... un-educated guess.
Personally, I will - like many of you have said - will keep using handsanitizer in conjunction with hand washing. I will just use MORE hand sanitizer (when water is not available) It justHAS to help. Bacteria causes plenty a stomach problem and we DO know that hand sanitizer works on bacteria.
I hope I didn't cause any further panic. I know from this that I will become a better hand washer. I had become pretty dependent on hand cleaner alone.
Take care and stay well
