you're right! we have the "power" of having "control" of our health (not the panic attacks but..) and we should be proud of that![]()
From the stories I've read from several users on here, and from my own experiences, I'd say yes, we emets tend to have stomachs of steel! But that's probably due to a mind over matter complex....the fear of vomiting may become so ingrained that our brains are more willing to stop it from happening. However, that's not to say we're immune from ever vomiting again; if one's body really needs to do it, it'll happen whether we like it or not. =P
Other than that, I think our cautiousness may have something to do with our longstanding vomit-free records! As emets, we're a bit more hygienic than the average person, plus we make it a habit to steer clear of sick people, and some of us literally obsess over food safety. All of those extra precautions probably contribute to our knack for avoiding illness.
Although, our infrequent vomiting may play a factor in fueling our phobia....it's human nature to fear the unknown, and since most of us emets have had very few experiences with vomiting, we seem to be more likely to fear it than others who vomit more frequently. It's almost as if our phobia wouldn't exist if we got sick as often as other people, since then it would just be a common event in our lives, nothing to be afraid of.
But hey, nobody likes to throw up, nor would anybody like to experience it frequently, so I guess emetophobia does have some "perks" to it if it helps stave off sickness a bit. =)
Panic at the thought of doing something is a challenge to do it.
I've wondered this too. It wasn't until not too long ago that I learned that I wasn't the only human being on earth that felt this way. After having learned it I've come to realize that this amazing resilience for holding long records with throwing up isn't only me and can be quite frequent among people with emetophobia. So many of the friends I have had throw up several times a year. They are so much the opposite of me. I can't even imagine being sick and as sick as they are. I've eaten really weird things and haven't gotten sick, like, one time I was a camp counselor for this camp my church was doing and the drinking water had bleach in it. Even though I could sort of taste it, I hate the idea of being sick from dehydration and exhaustion so I drank a lot of water. So many people got sick that year, but I was perfectly fine. It's weird.
And I'm going to have to agree with TheSweetThinker. If I were sick more often, I may not have much of a problem with it. The longer I go without throwing up, the more anxious I become that I will get sick.
Yes definitely. If we were sick more often we probably wouldn't fear it the same way.
