I am a newbie. I live in Houston, and we have wonderful hospitals here, and a ton of medical research.

Anyway, at my college shuttle stop a few weeks ago there was a flyer hanging asking for healthy adults to participate in a study of Norwalk virus. It sounded very involved, and the flyer warned that you should expect to be ill for at least 24 hours. It involved something like a two week inpatient hospital stay and then returning to the hospital periodically over a six ? month time frame. Anyway, I know that they compensate for these studies, but I'm sure that many of us could not be paid enough.

Yeah, I'm not sure what they are studying specifically. The flyer listed a 1-800 number to call up for more information. Since they warned that you should expect to be sick if you participated, I think that they must be having people agree to be infected with it. I actually wish that I could hear more of the details. The study was supposed to start at the beginning of February.

But maybe it will help doctors learn something good.

WHO in their RIGHT MIND would ever WANT to do that???!!!! NO ONE I know, emet or otherwise, would EVER want to be voluntarily ill that way! At least they have the courtesy to contain them in the hospital for 2 weeks so they can't infect the population!

It may be for a future vaccine. That would be SWEET!! One less thing to worry about.

These people are nuts!! I would never do that! But if the
study does have something to do with a vaccine, then these people, who
are being injected with the virus, are helping all of us. But I
still think they are crazy! Carrie

I had read about a study that was done where volunteers were given water that had the norwalk virus in it to drink, and then they studied these certain genetic markers in each person to see which ones would not normally allow you to be infected with norwalk. It made me queasy just thinking of these people who came in to drink that nasty water. It still makes me queasy.

If it's for a vaccine they're making, that's great, but definately count me out. YUCK!

That is nuts!!! But then you know, there are some people out there who actually LIKE to vomit!!! None of my friends/family is an emet, but 6 weeks ago when they had that virus like Norwalk (and who's to say it wasn't Norwalk??) they were miserable and said they NEVER wanted to go through that again!!!! Even my sister who v'ed twice and not for 12 hrs. like the rest of them!!
