    Smile Beating it back.

For almost 20 years I've fought the idea that I might throw up from any thing at any time, for any reason.

The only true problems I suffer now are stress and general anxiety. I tried counseling, I tried medicines, I even threw up at one point. Nothing helped. Nothing changed.

Honestly, the thing that finally helped me was my Dad. He told me that I would NEVER beat a fear. All fear is engrained in your mind--hardwired as a defense, part of the animal section of the brain. However, if I simply gave into my fear, I would die. Plain and simple. Or, I could simply stand up and say No, and not learn to make it go away, instead, learn to control it. He told me that NOBODY wants or likes to throw up. He told me that he himself hadn't thrown up in close to 20 years himself.

To clear this up, my dad is no doctor, not a shrink...my dad is a Mechanic, like myself.

He is, however, 60 years old and raised himself from nothing. So his words resonated hard in my heart and yes, I still suffer a fear when I eat too much or feel sick on a boat, but I learned that this fear is a natural reaction to a biological response.

So, I came back to these types of forums, not looking for help, but to help others. I want you all to see that you CAN do this. You don't need medicines or therapy. The strength comes from inside you, and you can truly do anything. You can definitely PM me if you have any questions or would like to chat. I'm happy to discuss my methods.

That's wonderful, thank you for sharing your story. Your dad is a smart man and knows what he is talking about. I'm glad you have over come a powerful phobia and willing to share your triumphs.

Congratulations! What an accomplishment to have overcome the phobia on your own. And I agree with alisha27, your dad sounds like a very smart, insightful man. Best wishes!
