Benadryl has been my drug of choice for both anxiety and n* and v* for years and years. And it's cheap

when i am having anxiety over n* and v* i take zofran. It's not a medication for anxiety specifically but it kind of it like a domino effect it gets rid of the n* and v* and then my anxiety goes away from being n*. I have also taken phenergan for it. Except the phenergan makes me really sleepy so I wouldn't recommend that during the day if your driving or will be.

Antinausea meds are great if you're truly sick but if you're using them just for emetophobia, in my opinion, they cause more harm than good. Most of them cause drowsiness, which makes it dangerous if you're driving or doing anything else that requires you to be alert, and they all have side effects. Some cause chronic constipation which, if you think about it, walking around with poop festering in your intestines probably increases the likelihood of developing some kind of intestinal thing that could lead to vomiting and worse, and any and all meds have long-term side effects that aren't noticeable right away. Also, taking antiemets all the time, like any other medication, will lose it's effectiveness because you'll build up a tolerance so when you really need it, it won't work.

Best thing to do, in my opinion, is work on lowering your anxiety through therapy, relaxation, avoiding stimulants like caffeine, etc.

I really think Phenergan works but the side effects are so horrible (extreme fatigue to the point where I have to go to sleep) so it's a little inconvenient to take unless I REALLY need it.

I also like phenergan. It doesnt seem to affect me in the way it does most people. I can function as normal on 20mg. When Im feeling extremely n* Ive been known to take upto 50mg (max dose) and still only feel a little woozy!!

I take Unison when I am having a panic episode. It is a OTC sleeping pill, but my doctor told me that it was originally marketed as a anti-emetic. The side effect if sleepiness was so severe that they stopped prescribing it for that purpose and used it as a sleep aide instead. I do not take it during the day, only at night if I am too sick or panicked to go to sleep. It will put me to sleep within 20 mins, and it is one those sleeps where you don't move for 8-10 hours and wake up wondering if you were dead! I did take it once when I had noro (last year), that was the only time I did not fall asleep with it because I had such bad D I could not go more than 10 mins without needing the toilet, but I did not V and it made me so out of it that I kind of didn't care what happened at that point.

Those of you talking about phenergan and zofran, how do you get prescriptions for this stuff? Every doctor I've been to is very reluctant to prescribe anything at all much less just hand me a bottle of nausea Meds because I ask! Are you being treated for something where they would be commonly prescribed?

I also have a problem with going to the doctors office in fear of contracting a SV there.

I've been battling nausea due to acid reflux and heartburn every day for the past 7 years and it's messing with my diet as of recently so I went in to the doctor and he prescribed me zofran. I'm active duty Air Force and the military doctors are very lenient as to what they give their people. Vicodin and percocet are given away like candy too!

I'm in Australia and luckily Phenergan is available over the counter without prescription..though there is nothing else really available without one. We have Benadryl here but it doesn't contain the same ingredient that it does in the US. Perhpaps that might be a good option for you?

I take Motillium, & sometime Pepto Bismol, ginger as well. I`m trying to find Coca Cola syrup in the shops, as I read somewhere that Emetrol is made up from that, but you can`t buy Emetrol in this country.

This is to Kristinak - You wrote that you've been using Benadryl for anxiety and for the v* and n*. Can something that simple work for us too?? How much do you take? It really can keep you from v*ing??

Unisom is awesome. I take it to help with my insomnia and it's a huge bonus that it works as an anti-emetic as well. However, I believe it has to be the Unisom sleep tabs as opposed to the other types. It works really well in terms of easing my anxiety and panic attacks as well as the nausea.

It DOES take away nausea. I've been using it forever. If I'm pretty nauseated, I will take two. I also take it if I have any twinges of anxiety. I had a psychiatrist tell me to take it because Xanax made me VIOLENTLY ill. I've never come so close to throwing up as I did when I tried it, and it was a tiny dose!

If you take the liquid or the dissolving strips, it seems to work faster, and I have actually taken up to four at a time when I was feeling really bad.

I just have a question regarding the prescription anti-emetic/anti-n* pills -- how do you guys get your hands on these? In my case, my doctor would ask me why specifically I needed a med before prescribing me something, and if I said I needed meds for n* he'd just run the gamut with a bunch of bloodwork to try to get to the root of the problem & rule out illnesses.. I just wanted to know how you guys present to your doctors that you need these meds and how you get them.. I've tried over the counter anti-emetics & they made me feel crazy. I hated it. And I just slept for hours..

I too have prescription anti emetics. I have Compazine and Phenergan. The compazine is less likely to make me drowsey. The phenergan makes me very sleepy but I can still function. Benadryl helps with anxiety for me but not as well as the xanax does. My doctor knows about my fear and he said that I needed to get past it but he wouldn't give me any meds to help. He did on the other hand give me a prescription for just 5 pills.. So, I switched doctors and explained to the new one about emetophobia. I now have a prescription for 20 phenergan and she told me that if I needed more to call for a refill. She also put me on prozac for the ocd and fear... needless to say I stopped taking it after 5 days of hell from side effects...

just an FYI, if you think the over the counter meds made you feel like that and you slept for hours, the prescribed medications are the same if not worse.

I'm from Aus and my name is Kim too! I'm assuming you're asking about anti-emet meds available here? Well phenergan can be purchased OTC in any pharmacy (it's marketed as an allergy medication so incase you're asked why you need it) and to my knowledge that's about it without a prescription. But other things such as ginger and peppermint tea are often helpful with mild n* (or ''anxiety'' n*). Some travel sickness meds can also be used as an anti-n* measure.

I feel like such a loner! For years I took nothing except for Tums if I had an upset stomach. When I got my prescription for Meclazine (for my Vertigo) I used that a few times. Then I learned that 99% of the time, the upset stomach was anxiety. I now have a prescription for anti-anxiety that I take only when I need help getting through a situation. I've only needed it once, but it's nice to have. It helps a whole lot more than anti emetics IMO, because it's helping the actual problem if I'm not really sick. If I am really sick it usually needs to come out and I tend to not freak out while it's happening, just before.

Phenergan is the only thing that works for me. It does make me very tired, but I'd rather sleep for hours than vomit.

I agree with Paisley - I think it's best to avoid anti-emetics unless you're in pretty exceptional circumstances e.g. recovering from a general anaesthetic. I don't think they're good for you and I think it's way too easy to become reliant on them, which adds to the phobia and control that emet has over your life. I drink peppermint tea for nausea (which works instantly for me - even the smell of it makes me feel better). For anxiety, hugs or relaxation tapes work better for me than medication I've tried in the past, and don't have the side effects!

Its kind of the same thing. Its the "new" xanax. I used to take xanax and it never worked. But i switched to nirivam and it worked sooooo good. Its for nausea yes, and helps you calm down. nirivam is the extended release of xanax. Really worked quick with me

To kristinak, yeah that is one of the side effects. That's why I was asking niravam for anti-nausea because the side effects is nausea. That's why I am confused. Also Xanax/niravam is addicting

yer basically phenergan..which still worked for me. you caould also try motion sicniss tablets like kim said. but i got a prescription off my doc for bad indegestion ad reflux and when i had a tummy bug a couple months ago the doc gave me some as well. maxalon is the one that they like to give (Or pramin). and it works very well. I do not rely on it though! i rarley take it. only when i can rule out anxiety and indegestion and im very naueous.
