I just need a little reassurance. I am over at my mom's house with the girls, and my mom and I just got back from the grocery store. While we were there, my mother went to the deli and picked up one of those rotisserie chickens--that sit for hours under those heating lamps after they are done cooking. Well, Logan just ate her weight in the chicken, and it really makes me nervous because I don't think those lamps are really hot enough to keep the temperature of the chicken at a safe level!!!! All I need is for her to get food poisoning!!!! Does anybody out there have experience eating/buying these meals????

So long as the chicken is not raw in the middle, it should be ok. But it's best to eat real food that you've cooked yourself, instead of this fast food rubbish. Eat free-range chicken, not some poorhalf-cremated battery hen riddled with salmonella.

My family and Ieat those chickens all the time andnone of us have ever gotten sick from them. The grocery store is trained in food preparation and I am sure they make sure the chicken doesn't go bad. I'm sure your daughter will be fine.

oh and jaigopal, I know you meant well when you say "some poorhalf-cremated battery hen riddled with salmonella" but statements like that can scare people, especially when they are asking for reassurance that their children won't get food poisioning. A statement like that would terrify me if I was already worried about food poisioning.

Yes, that really bothered me, as well. There's really not much I can do about the food my mom buys and then decides to feed us!!

We have eaten them before and NEVER gotten sick. Like confused said, these people at the grocery stores that prepare the food are trained to know how to cook it, and how long it is ok to leave them out under those heating lamps. As a matter a fact, the Wal-Mart I have bought ours from have the time written on it when they are put out, so you know how long they have been there under the heating thingys when you buy it. Please try not to worry, Im sure you all will be fine!!

Thanks, Leigh. I've just been a little paranoid lately, you know. . . . We've eaten those before, too, but I stopped buying them because my mom told me a story of a family that got food poisoning after eating roast beef sandwiches at Arby's--and the roast beef sits under those same heating lamps that this chicken does!! Tomorrow is a holiday and my children are so very fond of becoming ill on holidays!!!

I think everyone will be fine, I have never eaten those ( I hate chicken, and not because of emet) but like Leigh said they do write the times on the package, so I would try not to worry. I am sure everything will be just fine. Have a wonderful Easter!!

I know how those paranoid thoughts can weigh on you, Im glad we are here to give you some reassurance though. I myself am funny about expiration dates, so I can understand your concern about the chicken. I also worry about my children getting sick on holidays and such. I hope you all have a WONDERFUL EASTER tomorrrow!!!!

Donna I buy those chickens at least 3 times a month, I call it the fast and easy chicken on a bun dinner we have never became ill. One thing I get very nervous about is buying can foods, if there is no expire date on them I won't buy them!

You'll be ok, we've eaten them too and never gotten sick, nor have I heard of anyone getting sick from them.

I didn't mean to scare anyone. Salmonella is killed easily by heating food above boiling point - in fact, all harmful bacteria are killed in this way. That's why it's best to eat well cooked food and why mostfood poisoning is due to poor preparation of cold food such assalads. And I would imagine thatplaceswhere there is food preparation are regularly inspected by the local authorities for health and safety. But the best way to avoid any food poisoning is to eat healthy animals and through hygenic preparation at home. I've got an extreme prejudice against fast food anyway and come from a family that specialises in organic farming, so I'm coming from an ideological perspective on this.

Well, this chicken isn't fastfood, per se, the chicken is a whole chicken from their store, they just cook it there in the store at the deli department, then put it in a plastic bag and keep it under those heat lamps (that's what makes me nervous about eating them that way, that's a whole chicken, not a little cheeseburger or something being kept warm under those lights!!!)

If it has been cooked before being put in a bag, then I can't see the problem. I assume the heat lamps are used so you can eat the chicken warm. The fact that they are put in bags means that you won't get any flies and vermin on them, so there is no danger of contamination. I am sure that if stores across your country are doing this and people are eating millions of these chickens every day, then it is safe. It's just a matter of taste. I would imagine that after a few hours under heat, the meat would become a bit dehydrated and tasteless - but still safe.

The chicken was fine, usually I am not so paranoid about things like that, but with the way things have been going this winter, I am just freaking about everything, plus I am pregnant and that makes everything 100 times worse than normal!!

We eat those things all the time. So long as their either kept under the warming lamps or put into a fridge (and not left in the back ofone for a good 2 weeks as my mom is so fond of doing) theyre all fine and good. Can't say its the tastiest meat thats ever been brought into this house but i can say no one has gotten sick of them.

home and free them in the Ravine our house backed onto. The poor lil

I dont know, personally i love seafood but i cant eat it too often as i am allergic...

If you are in need of a quick meal though and are an actual fan of chicken (which i am not...) try those chickens...they are decent if you make them with say the swiss chalet sauce (comes in an envelope) and turn it into a hot chicken sandwich. Or barbeue sauce, or basically any kind of sauce you like, they just do need the sauce in my oppinion...

OK--I'm a little late posting. I was off this past weekend and was very busy.

I don't eat those rotisserie chickens, not because of being afraid, but because I just don't like them. I actually do occasionally eat roast beef sandwiches from Arby's and the post above really freaked me out. I don't eat burgers and that is one of the few fast foods that I will eat. Well, I guess I will not be eating them anymore! I hadn't really thought you could get food poisoning from them. Guess I was wrong!

Jesskali: You can only really get food poisoning from burgers if they have gone bad (ie not kept in the right conditions or have gone well past their expiry date) or if they are not cooked thoroughly (minced meat can come into contact with contaminants, whereas the inside of a piece of steak has not been exposed to anything). Unhygienic habits of those cooking food (such as not washing hands after going to the toilet) can also cause poisoning, but any half-decent restaurant will have strict hygiene regulations for its staff.

But bear in mind that most food poisoning cases happen in the home, where standards of cleanliness and food storage can fall well below those expected in a professional kitchen.

Not in the US--restaurants here pretend to be hygenienic!! I would trust my own kitchen above most restaurants!! They just want to make a $ and put on a good face for health department inspectors!

You are exactly right about that Donna. Since I work at the health department in NC, I know that our state is one of the most lenient when it comes to proper food handling and sanitation. We have the minimum standards for inspection! I will only eat at restaurants with a sanitation grade of 95 or above. Forntunately we have a few restaurants here that score 100 every time they are inspected. I,of course, frequent those most often. I have heard that in many states they are not even required to post the rating in the restaurant. I hope that doesn't happen here!

Sometimes I think we, in the West, get a bit obsessed with hygiene. I've done quite a bit of travelling in India and have eaten in all sorts of places - I'm sure none of them are tested for hygiene. I have never had food poisoning. I believe this is because I've always had hot food andavoided salads, cut fruitand tap water. Also, food tends to be freshly made in India, not pre-prepared as in most restaurants in the West. I had a couple of bouts of loose stomach, which I put down to heat, the stress of travelling for two days on a train or drinking too much beer. Nothing an Immodium won't cure.

If you stick with freshly cooked hot food from a popular restaurant, you can't really go wrong.
