It sounds like a lot of us have IBS, so I wanted to share with you all what I found. My IBS started around four years ago - about the time my emet got REALLY bad. It came and went for the next three years, but beginning when my husband was v*ing for a week (and my emet got horrible), it flared up again, but this time never eased up. I went to the doctor and they prescribed antispasmodics, but I was always too afraid to take them because a possible side effect was v*ing.

I found this website remedyfind.com and I noticed that the only treatment that seemed to work for a lot of people was self-hypnosis. One program was mentioned over and over again. I was a little skeptical, but figured I had already spent a ton of money on drugs I was afraid to take, so what was another $90?

It really worked for me! The program lasts 100 days and they give you a schedule of which CD to listen to which night. I was suprised at how good it made me feel. I went from having an IBS attack every other day to maybe once every couple of months. When I did get them, they were very mild. I was no longer afraid to be more than 10 feet from a bathroom. They also helped me sleep, which was something I hadn't been able to do in a long time. I would listen right before I went to bed for the night and I could sleep through the night without waking up in a panic over my stomach. I always fall asleep while I listen, so I don't really know what the CD's say, but there is soothing music and a guy's voice that somehow make it all work.

I finished the program in October, and lately, because my emet has been getting bad again, I have re-started listening. My IBS has already noticeably decreased. I know my IBS is related to my emet, and I wonder how many of you have the same problem.

The website I got them from is IBSaudioprogram100.com They were definitely worth the money!

Oh, and I used to get really bad problems around that time of the month - d*, nausea, to the point where I basically stayed in bed for a couple of days. That pretty much went away too! I can make plans now during that time of the month without worrying whether or not I will be spending it in the bathroom!

I don't know how they work, but they do!

As I mentioned in another thread, Paxil is what cured my IBS. There is evidence that there is a physiological reason for this as well because Paxil (and other SSRI's) affect serotonin levels. From what I have read, approximately 95% of the body's serotonin is in the gastrointestinal tract and is responsible for peristalsis or intestinal movement. The other 5% of serotonin is in the brain and is responsible for mood etc. I'm not saying that SSRI's would help everyone because IBS is one of those ailments that doctors do not really know any one cause for, and maybe there are multiple causes for it after all. So different things probably help different people.

Based upon the serotonin idea, it seems like the relaxation tapes would help because they would probably increase your relaxation and thereby increase serotonin levels and some of that might be an increase within the intestines as well as the brain.

My IBS was not too much related to emet for me; they don't really coincide for me personally, but I can see how they might for others.

Just make sure you're certain its IBS to begin with, a lot of doctors diagnose it (overly) because they don't want to persue other options. I had stomach aches every day for years, one urgent care doctor wrote it off as IBS and gave me a prescription (bentyl). Luckily I did persue further, the bentyl makes my condition that I DO have, worse. From what it sounds like, every time someone complains about a lot of stomach aches, they DO write it off as "just stress" or IBS, without further testing to see what it really could be.

I was diagnosed with IBS about a year and a half ago. I was started on Prevacid and Zelnorm twice daily and it worked wonders for me! I've had very little stomach problems since!

Yeah, the first five days on Paxil have strong side effects, but those for me disappeared entirely, leaving only the positive effects. I stopped taking it at first after 2 days because of side effects. Then, six months later I tried it again, but I cut it in 1/4 of a pill so that I was taking a tiny sliver. I would take the little sliver for a week, then 2 slivers for another week and so on until I got up to a full pill. In this way, I didn't notice any side effects because it's so gradual. This is the method that I use for any antidepressant, and I would use it for any other pills that I could because it gradually introduces your body to the pill in low doses so the body can adjust.
