Thumbs down Are incubation periods becoming longer for noro??

I posted a little while back saying my friend wanted to go out with my family and hang out. But, we ended up getting busy and couldn't make it. She texted me a couple days later saying thank god we didn't because her little girl got the sv* that same afternoon we were supposed to see them.

I saw her the other night and found out 5 days after her daughter was sick she got it, and later that day her husband got it too!
WTF? Is the 72 hour incubation period out the window now?! That has always been my guideline but now I'm nervous it can be longer.

I'm hoping (mostly because I was exposed about 53 hours ago) that when people say they caught the s*v* more than 1-3 days after someone, it's because they picked it up through the process of cleaning or using the same bathroom as someone who was recently sick. S*v* germs can live on surfaces for up to 2 weeks I've heard! So I think that is the time period in which one can get infected if they are in the same place as the germs, touching those surfaces, etc. I'm no expert and perhaps I am wrong, but it seems like the most likely story to me. I have been around s*v* a LOT this season (3 family members over Thanksgiving, 3 different family members last week) and it seems that the typical incubation period after first exposure is right around 2 days.

That said, I think you are right, that 72 hours is still a safe bet!! I have NEVER known anyone to get it after that long when they weren't around the germs. (After being exposed at a specific time and not contracting it from that experience)

You can shed the virus through stool for up to 10 days.

And it can live on surfaces for up to 2 weeks! So this puts it in perspective...say she helped her sick daughter and didn't properly wash her hands then sat down to her computer did something and went on with her day...few days later she was on the computer (now infected with the virus) and then she makes a sandwich for lunch and her and her hubby eat essentially the virus...that's why bleaching after someone is ill is so important!

I got noro 5 days after my daughter and that was 2005. I think when its in your home it can hang around onger. I wasnt as emet back then so my cleaning standards were not what they are now, but deep cleaning should get rid of any lingering germs.

It all depends on when that person picked up the virus. The incubation period still remains 12-48 hours. However, they may have picked up the virus 3 days later. It all depends if they were lacking on their hand washing.

i still like to believe that after about 48 hours, if I'm feeling perfectly fine I'm ok...but i think it all depends on how they picked it up.
If you try and tell me a phobia is unreal. I dare you to live a day, and feel what I have to feel.

Well I love her to death, but she isn't the most hygienic. We are so alike yet when it comes to that we are complete opposite. She lets her little girl sleep on the floor of an airplane, and she got sick 2 days after they returned home from a trip. I get on an airplane and I spray the whole area down and sanitize it!
Anyways, her girls are always v* and she seems to think nothing of it. So, you all are probably right she just didn't clean the way we would have! I think in an emets home the typical incubation period is 48 hrs. 72 hour tops!

well to be fair your really not in the clear for up to 10 days, the 72hrs thing is for an onset of symptoms.

Fixxxxer you look at things do negative. It's not inevitable to get a sv*. I know lots of families who don't share it. It's all based on personal hygiene and cleanliness of your home. I'm not saying you are not clean but it's conpletely a false statement and probably would scare the hell out of people on here especially you saying the 10 day period. If someone in your house gets suck you clean up properly and have taught and enforced proper hygiene then it's highly unlikely anyone else would get sick. So if all those steps are taken 72 hours is when someone can feel safe. Don't give false insecurities. It's not cool especially in this forum...

I have 2 kids a almost 6 year old and a 17 month old...my 6 year old have been in school since 2.5. I taught my kids proper hand washing, at age 12 months they started washing their hands before eating. By 2 no putting hands in mouth, we eat a healthy well balanced diet. My hubby & I got a sv* awhile back the hubs v*ed all over the living room floor, and kitchen sink I sprayed lysol and bleached everything 3 days later my 2 kids sat in that same area and played and have everyday since then. My mother in law even came over while we were sick to pick up the baby after my hubby's v*ing started and she had the baby all night and didn't get sick. Moral to my story just because someone in the house is sick does NOT mean ALL will get sick, yes there will be times germs will be shared but not every! Proper hygiene and cleaning STOPS the spread of germs.

I agree it's all about good hygeine and clean up. When I was younger my little sister got S~V all the the time and it was rare that anyone else in the house ever got them. Same with my son, when he was 1 he caught at least 3 in one winter and only once did we all catch it and that was because I didn't realize that he was sick with one thinking it was just dinner not agreeing with him and it was just an older baby spit up or something ( I was completely naive), needless to say I didn't disinfect or clean up as I should have and a few days later I was s* and my sister was s*. Every other time he got it I lysoled everything and I mean everthing, and I washed all his clothes blankets etc in very hot water and it never spread. Same when I was going to college, everyone in my class was getting this s~v that was going around and one by one were absent from it, I never caught it because I was extra extra cautious and germophobic lol.

It seems that Fixxer is speaking in "I-statements" and as he admits himself, his perspective is also colored by his fear. That's fair enough. And while it might be scary the truth is that no matter how hygienic you are there is still always a chance you can catch something. That's why it's not a good idea to spend your whole life energy trying to avoid vomiting. While you may succeed, because there's always a chance you won't, you'll still have a phobia.

I really think it varies. My boyfriend came down with some kind of a virus and was sick to high-heavens for two days, I didn't catch it in spite of sharing the same bathroom. I caught some kind of a stomach flu for 3 weeks with proper hand washing. I also have caught c-diff, hand foot and mouth, and pneumonia. I think it depends on immune system, sleep, hygiene. It's not all due to whether you are exposed or not.

i agree that cleaning/washing hands to an EXTREME degree can help prevent the spread of SV. i do all of this when the SV hits our home. however, because of my fear, and also because of how much effort is involved in doing this (particularly when you have a baby who touches EVERYTHING), i often get this feeling of hopelessness and, quite frankly, doom. i sometimes feel like i'm doomed to get it no matter what i do. sometimes i'm surprised and i don't get it, but there are times when i've done everything right and still get it (and I have no idea why). anyway, my apologies if i'm scaring anyone - that's not my intent, just saying how i feel...
