I was in the ER last night.

I was at work last night and about 8pm I started getting this pain in my chest. It hurt in my shoulder too. So I just passed it off as heartburn. Well I am still orienting and the nurse I was with said "Are you ok?" (This was 1 hour later) I said "Why do you ask?" She said you look like you feel bad and your very sweaty." Which I was sweaty. So she sat me down and took my bp at it was 157/80 which is high for me. I normally run 110/60. My pulse was in the mid 100's (which is not good) I was having pain and pressure. So she calls our nursing supervisor and she comes up and says "We are calling 911." I was like . "I dont think I need that." She insisted. So I went for an ambulance ride for the first time...hope its my last. They gave me nitroglycerin, 3 baby aspirin, put oxygen on me and started an IV access. UGH! Basically treating me as if I was having a heart attack. They hooked me up to an EKG and the reading was normal.

I get to the ER and my bp was down to 135/76. Pulse still high in the mid 100's. Well they did a complete cardiac workup and my heart is fine

The bad news is they think I have a stomach ulcer. They gave me a "GI cocktail" and it eased the pain. Then the doctor gave a prescription for Protonix - an H2 blocker...that means is helps reduce some of the acid in my stomach. I have to go for more testing I need a stress test (cardiac) and some more testing on my tummy! When the doctor pushed on my stomach...UGH! It hurt!

What an eventful night! You dont see many nurses being taken out on a stretcher from their job. On top of that I had to call a taxi and pay $5 to go down the street from the hospital to my job to pick up my truck <IMG class=inlineimg title=">:" alt="" src="http://talk.sheknows.com/images/smilies/mad.gif">

Its all from stress. I worry constantly about being sick, my kids being sick and other personal stressors. I go the doctor on Tuesday so hopefully something will come out of that (psych). Stress and anxiety are really getting the best of me!!

Thanks for listening...sorry to ramble!Edited by: madisonsmom

That sounds horrible! At least you found out now, though, before the ulcer got really bad. I was on Protonix for a while too, and it made me really dizzy for the first couple of days. It wasn't bad enough to stop taking it, and it only lasted for about 2 days then I was fine. Just to let you know!

GI cocktail isn't that when you drink this stuff and it makes your tongue and throat go numb? They gave me that to drink they called it Pink Lady. Helped my gut. So I am on medication for my ulcer everyday for the past upteen years. Are you ok now Debbie? Let us know how you are ok. Thinking about you.

I am sorry you had to be rushed to the hospital by ambulance.

I know what you mean about the stress, we all are so stressed all of the time, and sometimes I wonder if I will ever have a heart attack too.....

Anyways I'm glad to hear it was nothing serious

    Take care of yourself!

    Debbie,

I'm so sorry that you had to go through that. You have been pretty stressed out lately. I hope everything gets better for you. Keep us posted on what the GI tests find.

The good thing the doctor said is that my heart looks young. I am not old so I am not sure what she means. She said my chances of having heart problems are so small. Thats good. BUT the stress and anxiety are causing it to beat irregular sometimes. My tummy is a different story

Debbie, geez, what a night!!!! I hope that you are feeling better, but sorry that you are having to go through so much!! I know that I worry way too much about my own health and the health of my children and husband, and I know that the stress of worrying is not healthy, it seems like a vicious cycle!! Please keep us posted on your progress and tests. You will be in my thoughts!!

That stuff that they gave me put me in a panic! They didn't tell me that my tongue and throat would be numb!! You have to take it easy Debbie. I know that ulcer and gall bladder attacks can make you feel like you are having a heart attack, the pain, the hurt when you breathe, having the sweats, it is scary. Thank god I haven't had one since I had the gall bladder taken out. Watch what you drink or eat with caffeine, caffeine isn't good for the stomach and can make you have heart palpatations to. I am sure they will put you on a diet that consists of bland foods until your stomach feels better.

AM I GONNA HAVE TO TAKE THAT PLANE RIDE EARLIER TO TAKE CARE OF YOU!!

I have a problem with caffeine. I usually drink tea (not decaf) I cant stop drinking it. UGH! It might be a contributer to my heart palpitations especially when my anxiety is acting up!

That would be very nice Rhonda, take a vaca and come on down. Its nice here and you wouldnt have to take care of me

I know the de-caff tea bites. You can't taste the tea. I drink de-caff green tea, it tastes ok and it is good for you. I would like to go on a vacation, that sounds funny because I don't work. Maybe the day will come and I will visit you! Maybe that should be one of my goals, going on a plane visiting out of the country!!

Debbie, I am so sorry I haven't replied until now!! I truly hope you are better now, how scary!!! Yikes!!! I'm not supposed to drink caffeine, either, it makes me feel nauseous when I am pregnant, but I can't live without my iced tea, I drink it every day with lots of sugar in it (also not good for you!!)

Stress does not cause ulcers, can only aggrivate them. A virus causes them. Hope you are feeling better, sounds like an eventful night.

Yes stress does cause ulcers I am living proof of that. There is a virus that causes them to but stress, smoking, drinking way too much alcoholand eating certain foods that bring it on. With medication eating properly helps 100%.

Debbie sure come to Canada my door is opened!!

I have had problems in the past with gastritis too. I am not saying that the stress wore a hole in my stomach. I dont even know if I have an ulcer. Its probably another bout of gastritis. Viruses arent the only cause. Bacteria do too! I have been under tremendous amounts of stress and that can cause a lot of acid to be secreted in the stomach which in turn does cause inflammation of the stomach, hence the name gastritis.

I started Protonix tonight and will be on it for 8 weeks. We will see what happens. I will be referred to a GI specialist.

My mom has a lot of stomach troubles. Her's started with the h-pylori bacteria and went from there. LONG STORY! I dont want to end up like her.

Thanks for all of your get well wishes!!
