Do you have a walkman? Cd walkman anything with earphones? Try that because I know when I don't want to hear certain things I put those earphones and listen to my songs. That should work especially in the hospital, can you try that? I hope you feel better soon.

*hugs* i hope you feel better real soon. i would try the walkman thing (hopefully you have one with ear buds) and if you cant sleep with those in, try to get a small player in your room? i find alot of the new age "solitudes" typed music is great for calming down to. personally, im a fan of the wones with water as a background to the music, but thats because for me water is very very calming. they also have ones with the sounds of wolves (for power) and the forest, etc. the cds and tapes are not very expensive either and someone might be able to grab one from a library for you, depending on where in the world you are.

but most importantly, feel better soon

The headphones are a great idea. Do you like to read? Get your mind interested in a good novel or something if you are albe. Even doing word finds or anything to keep your mind busy would be helpfull.

What I try to do in these situations is to talk to myself as I would talk to a child if he/she had this phobia. I would envision a child in the hospital, scared about the noises and dreams and I would say to them something like "I know this scares you, but you have to be strong. The noises are no more than coughing, and even though it sounds gross, it is nothing more than that. You are safe, you are in a very safe place where people are taking good care of you and you are going to be okay. And about those dreams you are having, I know they are scary, too.. But, they are just dreams and they cannot hurt you. You can do this. You will be okay." And everytime (I don't care if this is all I would recite in my head all day) I heard a cough or felt anxious this is what I would tell myself. Eventually, you won't even have to think about telling yourself this, it will just come naturally.

    Hope that helps.
