Question Family History of depression, anxiety, any mental illness?

I'm just curious as to how many people have a family history of mental illness. not actually sure if emet is considered a mental illness, but for many it ties in with other cognitive problems. (for me i have an anxiety disorder centered around emet.)

Sooo, personally i have a strong family background of mental illness, starting from my great-grandpa, who suffered from bi-polar. 2 of his 3 kids eneded up suffering aswell, (one of them being my grandma.) of my grandma's 6 kids, 3 have depression or anxiety, and of my 18 cousins, 5 of us struggle with problems aswell.
we're a really tight knit and open family though, and we actually joke about our problems alot :P

    so how about you guys?

Absolutely. Lots of anxiety, alcoholism, basically just mental health issues and health anxiety and obsessive compulsive tendencies. Bad combo but helps me understand somewhat why I feel this way. Good question.

My fam too. My grandma who i was very close to was a manic depressive. I remember times she wouldnt get out if bed for days. They even gave her shock treatments. Back then they thought it would help. We have alot of addiction in our family too. I think mental illness has link to genetics.

My mother suffered with depression in middle age, I don`t know if it was genetic or not, as she had a lot to put up with, having angina & a husband who could be a right pig at times. One of her half-brothers had depression, but I`m only depressed if something bad happens, like the tv being broken or losing something I value.

My mom's and father's ENTIRE side (except maybe a few 3 or 4 people) ARE ALL ADDICTS. Most of them either to alcohol or heroin. I just got off Benzo's and I am still not off alcohol. My father was BELIEVED to be schitzophrenic but never diagnosed with it and also depression. My mother had anxiety at a young age and so does both my aunts. Any phobia's though? My father can't be closed in (clausterphobic) in which I haev to a certain extent. I can't be enclosed in someone's house or office for long and hate elevators. My father also has an EXTREME fear of heights. My aunt on my father's side is bi-polar and has anxiety. My mom did heroin and painkillers along wtih my uncle, other aunt, many others...

I have dealt with clausterphobia, emetophobia, alcohol and pill abuse(started smoking marijuana at 12 and smoking cigarettes and drinking at 13), self harm at 13, anxiety, panic attacks, slight agoraphobia(fear of people), and depression, and slight OCD symptoms regarding my phobia of v*.
