    Unhappy OT- Organic foods?

A Trader Joe's Organic store just opened up near me a few weeks ago and I was very excited to go get a bunch of their goodies and try them out. Course, after my Mom comes home with a bunch of their stuff, fruit, candy, ice cream, pastas, all kinds of things, I hear that a LOT of people get very sick from organic goods. As excited as I am to try all these things I'm worried that that they'll make me sick.... How ridiculous do I sound? Because I know a few of my friends got their greens, lettuces and spinach and such, and they all had terrible D (I don't know how to spell D lol) and nausea and vomiting because their bodies couldn't handle the "pure" foods.... And then the Trader Joe's Peanut Butter and Nut spreads and a few other items just got massive product recall for product contamination resulting in 30 cases of hospitalized food poisoning on the east coast. So I'm scared to eat all these great things my Mom just brought home.....

Trader Joe's is nothing more than prepackaged convienence food that are marketed as "healthy". Peanut butter is a commonly recalled item EVERYWHERE and produce should always be washed, no matter where anyone happens to buy it. I personally dislike trader joes. It's nothing more than clever marketing and jacked up prices.

It's really not expensive over here, not sure if it's more expensive over where you are or not. We've got a lot of pretty expensive grocery stores here, this one's middle cost as far as it goes. I like it, and I've sucked it up and I'm scarfing down their freeze dried strawberry pieces and their gorgonzola cracker crisps. I'm trying their coconut milk ice cream after dinner, which is actually necessary because I'm pretty milk sensitive and this girl's gotta have her ice cream.

yeah, uh, the chocolate coconut milk ice cream is amazing, FYI. I will be making sure there is more of that in my house to eat, no need to worry about tummy aches from too much lactose with this one!! I know it's not the best grocery store in the world, but it's kind of a specialty store and that sort of thing is very new here and one of a kind so I'm just very excited to explore its' goodies!!

I never heard of organic veggies causing any digestive trouble because they're "pure". There's actually no scientific basis for that at all, just like the whole "detox" thing is a myth. It might be coincidental, like maybe your friends didn't rinse their fruits and veggies on the basis they were "organic" and then they just ingested bacteria and viruses from people touching them who had contaminated hands (SO many people don't wash their hands before touching food in supermarkets). I often buy organic food (including meat and milk) and never got any kind of digestive trouble from it. But, there's been several recalls lately about fruit and vegetable contamination in general (so regular, too). So that might be the cause. I say, go ahead and eat whatever you want from there just keep up the good habits of washing fruits and veggies (I use a bit of dish soap and rinse a lot.. veggie cleaning sprays work well too).

I go to trader joes all the time. I don't buy the penut butter but I don't have a problem with the produce. I believe organic means that nothing as altered or was not sprayed with chemicals. I do wash everything before even if it is organic. The prices there are great where i live. They do have a lot of tasty stuff!

yeah Cynna I am going to need truck loads of the chocolate coconut milk ice cream..... I love it. There's another natural foods store opening about 5 minutes from my house, they're just starting the build now, so I have no idea when they plan to finish it. I did eat the food, it was all pretty good, but the Gouda cheese crisps left a stank taste in my mouth, despite how delicious they were going down, note to self, have a drink when I'm munching on those. All I do know is that a bunch of my Mom's friends wanted to try out the organic produce and got really sick, maybe it was just all the excess fiber, no idea. No poop from the organic goodies yet, but the organic veggies come tomorrow, which will certainly tell how it'll change my poop lol. Jarlsberg cheese huh? I'll have to see how much it is compared to the cheese section at the fancy grocery store next time I need to buy food, although I'm not a massive cheese connoisseur, so it's not my highest of priorities. They've got some really fun stuff there, can't wait to go back and buy more!

Organic food is not going to make you v* unless there is viruses or bacteria on the surface of it from improper washing, or if one happens to be allergic perhaps to a specific product regardless of whether it is organic or not. Those people who got "sick" from it probably never ate a vegetable in their life and mistook pooping with d*. Organic food is honestly the best. Tastes beautiful where i get it, but the prices can be a bit steep. However if more people bought it then that would not be an issue.

I actually like Trader Joe's a lot, but I don't like their produce so I get it either at the regular grocery store or Whole Foods if I'm feeling rich that day :P

I agree, if you wash the organic produce correctly then they're not getting sick from it. A change in diet like that will make most people have some sort of stomach issue for a few days, because your body is adjusting to the new diet.
PM me for contact info such as skype, email, or facebook. Thanks!

Hi Rosie, both my wife and I eat A LOT of organic foods and neither of us has ever gotten sick. I still wash the vegetables regardless but honestly, you're probably least likely to get sick from organic as everything is real and natural. None of that man-made stuff!
