Hello all...I was wondering if anyone else is this way too....

Anytime I am at a Birthday party, I always think about having to eat the cake after the person blows out the candles. I mean, while people blow out their candles, I have actually seen spit fly onto the cake!! ICK!

Well, I will tell you...I have been scared of eating other people's Birthday cakes if the candles have been blown out. (unless it is someone real close that I know is not sick)

Well, on to my story...LOL! Last Sunday (Father's Day) my husband's brother was having a B-day party/Father's Day celebration for my father-in-law. Well, there were 3 kids, (besides my 3 that came) and 8 of us adults. Well, as my husband's sister-in-law was lighting like 8 candles on the cake, she told my father-in-law to blow them out. That was no big deal, because I know him well, and I know he was not sick. BUT THEN....she RELIT the damn candles for one of the kids that wanted to blow them out too!!! So one of the kids blew them out, and then his sister had to do it after him too!!! YUCK!! So I was thinking..."uh, one person's spit was enough...but there is no way I am going to eat that cake now!" I mean, in my mind, I could just see all the spit dripping off of it...and all the "kid germs". I declined the offer of the cake. (whick looked soooooo good) Luckily,my hubby's SIL then brought in a pan of chocolate cake also that had no candles blown out on it. "YAYYYYYY!"...uh, until she started cutting it into squares and licking her fingers as she was putting the pieces on plates, and then letting one of the kids stick their fingers in it to taste the frosting!!!!!!!

But....I just took a piece from the way back, and ate it. My gosh...alot of frustration and anxiety for us emets huh???? SHEESH!!!!! Charlotte

Something like that would never occur to me - I love food too much!!! Unless somebody was gagging near the cake I'd be straight in

Well done on having a piece of choc cake though

I've had that issue w/ cake for YEARS. I thought I was the only one who would refuse to eat the cake. It's amazing how many germs are spread just from blowing out the candles. The way we do it in my family now, is we use a small oriental fan to "blow" out the candles. It's much more sanitary that way.

It hasn't really bothered me...I mean, if someone spits all over the cake, i'll wipe off the frosting, but I just love cake so much! I'll dig right in. But it's great that with all of your fears you could still eat the other cake! Way to go!

I love birthday cake, and I have never thought of that before. I just always take a piece and never think about it, I guess.

I see your point. If
little kids have gotten into it, I refuse, or if its been around a lot
of people, or I'm not close to the person who blew out the candles.
Then I get concerned. IE: Wedding Cake. NO THANK YOU! And I also cant
help but think that the bakers germs could've gotten into it. And you
know the icing tube? Some people lick the ends of it, then continue to
ice. EW!</font>

I thought about that before. But as much as I love cake I dont feel comfortable eating much around people so I usually decline in eating birthday cake. Its not the most polite but then again the only birthday parties I go to are my sister's, and my two best friends. My bffs know that I dont so they dont bother with me. Even on my birthday I hardly eat my own cake!

well i don't have that problem with cakes lol. i guess i never thought
of it before, thankfully ^^;; but i am a vegetarian, so i never eat
cake anyway, unless i know it wasn't made with lard. However, i do get
really anxious when i know its a family party and i have to eat the
cake ^^' because i know i am expected to eat [if i just say i don't
want any, i get questioned], i get nervous (thinking that i will be
sick and unable to eat, and eating will make me sicker) so i
practically make myself sick at every family member's birthday ^^;;
however, the next day, I love to eat the cake!

Luckily for me I don't have to think about this much because most of
the birthday celebrations I go to don't have cake since there's a lot
of people in my family who are diabetic.

I can see your point about little kids with their hands in it. That's
just gross. Although I wouldn't worry about whoever blew out the
candles unless you know the person is sick or you see them spit on it.

I have never really thought about that before. Thank you for mentioning that, though, so now I'll know. I suppose, the saliva would only get on the top in most cases, so a person who is concerned could cut the top part of their piece off.

I think that was really weird of them to let the kids blow them out. I mean, it was the father-in-law's party!

Also, that is so sick how she was licking her fingers like that. That should be gross, even to a non-emet person! People really need to think that maybe people only want the cake how it is with the cake and other goodies... Not a taste of other people's saliva! Or germs!

Wow....that is great that lots of you don't worry about that kind of thing! That is great! I didn't start worrying about that until like 1998 when my niece had a sv like 2 days before her Birthday, and of course, we were invited to go. I then thought. "what if she is still contagious??? And she gets spit on the cake??" It worried me horribly, because I didn't want to be rude and not eat it. Well, my kids and husband ate some, and that scared the crap out of me; I mean...I couldn't tell them not to eat it, because of course, this emet is my problem. *Sigh*

Anyways, no one got sick after that, which was suprising to me; although now, I still worry about eating cake after someone blows the candles out, or alot of people have to hover over it.

Like some of you said...it is gross for even non-emets to eat cake after the "cake cutter" had been licking and serving...LOL!! ECK!!! Charlotte

You know, I guess I have never thought of it that way either, but now my eyes are open. I will probably remember this the next time we have a birthday party in my family. We rarely do candles on the cakes unless it is my niece and nephew who are 8 and 13. I'm not a big fan of b-day cake, but I usually do eat a little bit.

I completely agree! And I worry about that, too! Glad I'm not the only one. The real killers are those candles that don't blow out so easily. You know, they relight themselves, loads of smoke swirling around as the person is attempting over... and over... and over... to blow them out. Then other childrenor adults come to help, showering the precious goodness with spittle.Geewiz! They need to put a warning on the labels. &gt;.&gt;; Edited by: peachfeet

I just want to add something here and I really don't want to offend anyone. It makes me sad that so many people reacted like..."I never worried about that before, but now I will!" It's like we all worry about so many (often unnecessary things) that we shouldn't read about someone's fears and then just add then to our list of fears, you know? Maybe we shold think of it more like..."I never worried about that before and nothing happened, so I will not start now! Instead, maybe I will help talk others out of being scared!"

I don't know, maybe that was rude or way off base...if so, just tell me, I can take it! Good luck and try not to worry so much! It's bad for your health!

I never thought about that before, I don't like cake all that much anyway. Every year I ask for a casada cake and every year they just get me a plain yellow one anyway now that you mentioned it I'm going to be paranoid about eating cake. LOL! Don't worry I don't blame you I blame myself for being so paranoid about everything!

I agree with harmonygirl72; if you never worried before about the Birthday cake thing, why start now?? It would be just another worry for you. I just posted so I could see if otherscould relate!

I admire those of you who havenever been afraid of the B-day cakes!! Keep the courage...you don't need to add another useless fear. Charlotte

I haven't ever thought about the cake having spit...if I feel like cake I eat it if I don't feel like it I say no thanks..and I believe I have that choice. The thing is..I reckon there are more germs on a supermarket trolley or on the things we have to touch each day..and our immune system needs these germs to stay strong! Don't you reckon???

You could always eat half the cake..the under half that has no spit! heehee.

Yep! If it's at a little kids (like REALLY little) birthday party, i'll just pick the icing off. That's all that's got the spit (if there is any) on it anyway.

wow, i have never thought of that before!

urgh and i've just realised that at my cousins birthday, these little kids wanted to blow out the canldes, and they were very scruffy kids(one of them kept coughing loudly) just aswell i dont like the icing!! i jsut eat the inside haha. So the icing is sort of a protective layer really......
