Can someone provide a logical explanation for this? (Gross toilet paper)

I went to my university bathroom today, and I wasn't wearing my glasses. There was a piece of TP hanging down a bit, I grabbed it, and then I realized that it had been dipped in some light brown liquid, which had dried. I don't mean a few drops... it was completely saturated (albeit dry). I used the roll below it instead, and washed my hands really well (but I obviously had to touch my pants and belt first). Ew ew ew.

The thing is, this is the 2nd time that I've come across toilet paper dipped in brown liquid this school year! My mind immediately thinks 'diarrhea' or 'v' (eg. the custodian dropped the roll into a dirty toilet)... but is there some other explanation? What do you think I touched? Should I be concerned?

A university prank maybe? I doubt anyone would put a roll that had fallen into the toilet full of poop or vomit back on the roll. They'd throw it in the garbage IF they were going to bother scooping it out.

Hmm... yeah, that sounds reasonable (definitely more reasonable than my mind's instant irrational assumption, haha... I tend to assume that any and every stain is vomit).

The rolls are in locked dispensers, btw. So I don't think a student could have dropped it.

Hey Im in a university shared house, this mysterious stain has occured frequently! Wash your jeans and belt, and ensure you thoroughly wash your hands, and be careful what you touch before you eat, i'm sure you have nothing to worry about, just take precautions

That is yucky. I'd probably jump to the same conclusion. However, if you washed your hands, then you are probably fine.
