Need advice about medication

I know someone has posted about this in the past...


I was prescribed Ativan yesterday to take as needed for anxiety. I don't plan on taking this med very often, but I have also never taken it before. I know many people who do take it. I was wondering how I will feel after taking it. I asked my doctor if it would make me sleepy and she said it was definitely possible. I know a lot of people on this site use it, so I was just wondering how it effects everyone.

Ativan is a very low grade 'sedatitive'. I have taken Ativan in the past, and found that is really helped me. It calms down your nerves, and takes the edge off panic attacks. Depending on your dosage (mine was 0.5mg), you may feel no effetcs at all, but it will not harm you. It simply helps to calm you down and you will begin to feel relaxed. I don't believe that Ativan is addictive, as I have never had any problems with it. Your doctor may prescribe the disolvable pill, which is very small, that you place under your tounge, or the kind that you swallow.


Ativan did not make me feel groggy at all. Again, it all depends on the dosage. Mine was the lowest and most prescribed dosage.

Hi Jess...I take xanax...and I think it's in the same family....it can make you sleepy....sometimes it does me more than others...sometimes i will actually have to lay down and go to sleep...but I also take it at work and it just make me a little bit sleepy....maybe b/c i am busy...i don't know...but it kind of gives me a calm feeling...a feeling i love....and sometimes floaty feeling...if I haven't eaten anything before i take it...i absolutely love the little pill...works wonders for my anxiety....good luck to you....Kate

Does it make you hungry or cause weight gain?

I take ativan as I need to, and when I first started taking it, I would get sleepy, but not anymore. Perhaps I was confusing the relaxed feeling with feeling tired. It just really makes you feel "smooth".... relaxed, without a care in the world.... It's nice when you're in a panic. It doesn't make you hungry or gain weight, from what I've found.

i take it too. i love the feeling it gives you. almost like a semi sleepy relaxed happy state of mind. it never made me hungry or gain weight. it helps sooooo much

Jess...it has never made me hungry or gain any weight....don't worry about that part....just go on and take it....it just gives you the best feeling ever.....Kate
