Hi all, I'm suffering atm beause I have a lot of pain. I sometimes get really bad pains in my torso, not stomach ache really, but not muscular. I don't know what causes them but normally I cna slep them off. Well last night the pains started about 9.15 and although I managed to sleep through the night they are still here this morning. It started as very low in my abdomen but now the pain seems to be sort of "tucked up" behind the bottom of my ribcage, which is where it is when I normally get the pain. Does anybody have any ideas what it might be or how I can relieve it? (Painkillers don't work and Rennies aren't helping so I know it isn't heartburn.)

I think I also may get these pains if I am understanding what you are describing. The only way I had to describe it was that it literally feels like labor pains, but I know there's no baby When it happens to me (if it is the same thing) The only thing I have found to help is deep breathing, relaxation, a heating pad and like you mentioned... sleep. I've only ever had it last like a few hours, though.

The only thing I can think is it could be Diverticulitous (sp?) My husband was diagnosed with this a year ago and the symptoms sound the same. He would get really bad sharp pains usually only on one side of his body. The pains made him feel like he had to go to the bathroom. He actually was hospitalized for it for about a week (only because he let it go so long). Diverticulitous is when your stomach can not process certain foods like corn, peanuts, or any type of seed and so these foods go into pockets in your stomach and will for lack of a better term....start to rot. So know he watches what he eats and has not had the pains in over a year!

I have been getting something similar sounding to that for the past few
months, i get a pain (cant really describe it) just below my ribcage in
the centre, i've had it all day today and had to come home from work,
there doesnt seem to be a pattern with regard to what i eat or drink,
which is annoying, im resigned to chalking it up as another thing on a
long list that the doctors wont be able to diagnose.

Let me know if you have any luck getting to the bottom of it Yenn.

Thanks. I started getting it about 4 years ago, the first time it happened the pain was so high up I thought I was having an asthma attack. From there I get it so randomly - it ususally happens on a night, and it doesn't seem to follow at pattern from food or anything. My mum thought it might be stress or being overwrought or something but again, it doesn't follow. A couple of times when it happened when I was away at uni, I'd spent the night drifitng in and out of either sleep or consciousness (think it was the latter) and i actually v* after it twice, but I think that was out of the pain being so bad rather than anything being wrong with me. When I mentioned it to the doctros, they said that it's probably IBS but it isn't really a stomach thing, it doesn't co-incide with needing the toilet, or being constipated or anything like that so I'm not really sure.

My dad says next time it happens I should let him take me straight to casualty so they can have a look at me but when it happens I just daren't go anywhere, it hurts so much, and then afterwards, it's so difficult to describe what's happening.

Doctors make me so mad! Everything is either IBS or "a virus". Can't they do some actual work and diagnosis to figure out what is wrong???

I think your dad's idea is good.
