hey people. this is my first post. iv bn really badly scared about v*ing or seeing someone v* for years...im 14 and seeing as i want to be a midwife when im older, i dont want it to affect my chances...anyway...

SO...yeah...in a few days im supposed to be going down to cornwall with my friend and her parents. seeing as its going to be a long drive (5 or 6 hours) I am really scared that I am going to be car sick. I have been car sick before, and feel nauseous when im in a car for an hour and a half...maybe less. I was just wondering, is there anything I can do in the car or eat/drink before/during the journey that will help....either prevent/stop me feeling nauseous or being sick??

I'm worried and want to know, for the future too.

PLEASE HELP!! thankyou...x

I know the mild foods like plain toast and saltine crackers work. Basically don't eat anything that's heavy on sugar or fat.

I also know that some people swear by ginger ale but I don't have any
personal experience as to whether it works or not. If worse comes to
worse you can always take an antimotion sickness drug like dramamine.

Another thing you can do is mind over matter. Ask if you can sit in the
front seat, pick a non-moving spot on the horizon like a water tower or
something and focus on it. Don't look out the side windows and try to
distract yourself with a conversation or something. Don't read or play video games.

If you do start feeling sick it can help if you get out and walk for a little while.

I know the feeling. Long car trips frighten me. Now that I
am older...28...on long road trips, I do ALL the driving. But
when I was younger, I wouldn't leave home without my Dramamine. I
never once got sick or even n* while I was taking it. Try eating
something small and mild for breakfast. Like a granola bar or
toast. I would stay away from things that could make your
stomache burpy, like orange juice, or greasy things like bacon.
Something else I ALWAYS bring with me on the road is bottled
water. You will be fine. Once you get on the road,
you my even enjoy the trip! Good luck. Carrie

You can also take medication for travel sickness, found in any drug store - just ask the pharmacist (chemist, druggist)

Ginger remedies are supposed to workreally well. Ask at your local health food store about them or you could just buy some ginger travel sweets. You could also take some travel sickness tablets as a precaution. Another tip I've read about is to use acupressure to alleviatenausea - by pressing your finger against the middle of the inner wrist about three finger widths above the crease where the wrist joins the hand. You can actually buy special travel wristbands that do this job for you.

I remember going through a similar thing when I was about your age. I went on holiday with my friend and her family, like you down to Cornwall, and from where we live it is at least a six hour drive. Thankfully I have never suffered travel sickness, but my friend did and I was so worried she was going to be ill during the journey. All that worrying and she was absolutely fine! I'm sure you will be just fine too, especially if you take some travel tablets.

If your friend and her parents don't already know, I think it would be a good idea to just mention your concerns about being ill, and I'm sure they will understand and if need be just stop for a break now and again.

Regards breakfast just have a couple of slices of lightly buttered toast or a few plain crackers. Don't skip breakfast thinking if you don't eat you won't be ill as an empty stomach can sometimes cause nausea.

Remember, many travel sickness sufferers grow out of it, particularly by the age of twelve, so if it was a few years ago you were last ill whilst travelling it may not happen again.

Hope everything goes ok, and have a fab holiday!

You could try mints or chewing gum too, peppermint is good for the stomach. There are plenty of travel sickness medications out there, try Boots or somewhere to see what they have going. Some of them make you drowsy too, so if your friends parents wouldn't have a problem with you sleeping, that would definitelyhelp the journey pass faster.

Whatever you do, don't read!! I've made that mistake one too many times, and though have never v'd, reading in cars makes me feel icky.

Your best bet? Sit in the front seat and look out of the window. Sit up straight, if you can, keep your head up, otherwise your senses will be all muddled, and you'll feel ill (like with any kind of motion sickness). Chew gum, perhaps, keep you feeling fresh. It'd also be great if the people you are going with could take some breaks say every hour and a half, or so, for you to stretch your legs. When you do get a chance to do that, take some really deep breaths of fresh air. Distracting yourself is good too- listen to the radio, or talk.

You're gonna be fine!

Have a light meal about an hour or so before you go, have breaks along the way if possible andcarry bottled water. I find sucking on hard sweets veryhelpful and not talking too much. Hope you have a great holiday! xxx

I used to get car sick on road trips ALL the time. Try bringing some music to listen to that sometimes helps. I always listen to music when I'm in the car, even on a short trip, because it helps take my mind off the fact that I might get car sick. Try playing word games with your friends, or stay up really late the night before and sleep during the trip. Have fun!

Hmm, is it just me or does looking straight out the front window help?

I get REALLY dizzy in cars when I look out the side windows and feel like I'm going down a roller coaster. It's best if you sit in the front and look straight out the window.
