OMG I'm so having to retype this LOL! It didnt' take the 1st time.

Anyhow lol. So I guess this is not completely OT since emet is a part of my delimma.

So, as some of you may remember I posted a couple of months ago about getting teeth pulled.

Recap: I'm having 3 wisdom teeth, one "drifting" tooth and a twice failed root canal tooth removed. (One of the wisdom will be cut out YUCK). And the root canal one willget an implant. I feel too young for all these crappy teeth! lol I am having IV sedation (Demerol/Versed combo) and am a bit nervous about it. Now last year I had IV sedation for one wisdom tooth and the tooth below the "drifting" one (hence the drifting) but it was a different doctor, only 2 teeth (rather than 5), took half the time this will take, and I don't know what meds they used.

So, yeah pain flips me out a bit but last time I only used Advil and was fine so hopefully this time too event ho it's more teeth. I don't intend to use prescription pain pills.

But mostly it's side effects of the sedation that I am concerned w/ even tho last time I was fine all the above mentioned reasons flip me out.

So, any and all comments are welcome!

I may not be on much for a few days, since it is end of summer session (WHOO!) and school will keep me occupied thru Tuesday which is good anxiety wise about this but Wednesday AHHH!

Anyhow, thanks in advance for your input!

my best bit of advice for you, TAKE THE SHOT!, it sure cuts pain back, and the needle dont hurt to much :P

other would be, try and relax, dont get worked up, just pay attention to how you are breathing, and try and keep it at a level pace .. and.. lastely, relax, the dentist knows what he is doing, he is payed mighty well to know - and if your there, you would have to get it done way day or another.

    my advice~

    1) take the shots :P

    2) focus on a steady breathing pattern.

    3) relax, try not to get to worked up over any pain.

    4) when its over, it would be wise to close your eyes for about 5 mins, if the doc says its ok - just so you can get your focus back and calm down.

    and lastely, good luck!!!

Well I am the queen of having treatment done at the dentist, lol! You name it I've had it done! It's not that I don't look after my teeth, I do, it's just becasue they are quite soft. I've had root canal work done which went just fineand I've had quite a few extractions too, including wisdom teeth and everything went wellwith not even the slightest feelings of nausea during or afterwards. I don't know what your dentist will do but I've always just had a couple of injections in my mouth to numb the area to be worked on. I'd rather be awake whilst work is done. Since you are having a lot of teeth extracted I'm not sure of the procedure, but I'm pretty sure you have nothing to worry about reagrds feeling nauseous. The only thing that ever left me feeling ill after a trip to the dentist was in the seventies when I was a kid and they put me out with gas to pull four teeth out. That really was horrid.

Regards painkillers, for what it's worth I've tried many of them even really strong prescription only ones, and none have ever left me feeling in the slightest queasy. Some have left me 'away with the fairies' lol, but absolutely no feelings of nausea, just pleasant feelings and the high of not being in pain! Ibuprofen are supposed to be the best over the counter painkillers for dental pain as they are also anti-inflammatories. My dentist always had me take this, if he didn't prescribe something stronger.

I hope everything goes well, I'm sure it will. The biggest problem you'll encounter is eating afterwards - have plenty of soup in!

Thanks for the support, guys. It's getting closer which is what bothers me I think. In a way I wish it were all over already but I also wish it didnt' have to be done lol Did that make sense? AHHH! oh well. Thanks again! I have a final tomorrow and a paper due Tues. so that should keep me occupied for a bit.

I've had Demerol and Versed when I had my EGD and it was wonderful! I didn't even know I was in the world! I slept so good when I had it. I definitely didn't have any n/v. I think you will be fine. I know how you feel though--I hate dental work. I had 2 root canals last year with only local anesthetic and I was just fine!

    Good luck!

    Hey good luck to you!

I had an emergency c-section under general anesthesia and woke up with a demerol drip. I had very little n* and no v*. I asked for Phenegren as soon as I could wake up enough to form words and it helped the little nausea I did have. Maybe you could ask for some phengren to take home just to make sure?

After I was removed from the demerol IV they wanted me to start oral vicodin pills but I said no and they acted like I was a belligerant patient or something. Even my parents who were visiting during one of the nurse's attempts tried to coerce me. I felt so helpless. Dh was back home with our napping 3 yr old and 18 month old and I think he is the only one who truly understands me and he wasn't there to help me! Anyway, long story even longer (LOL) we compromised with tylenol 3 (I had taken codeine as a child and knew it didn't make me n*). It was all I needed--who wants to be doped up anyway if you don't need it?

    You will do great!

I actually used to be ADDICTED to Demoral. It never made me feel N*, as I once said to my friend it made me feel "All Floaty and Nice". I happen to like Demoral a lot because it doesn't make me sick it just makes me feel good. Where are you located? I would like to know because I would like to be able to find a dentist who does a demoral drip for me...my teeth are horrible and I have to get work done once every few months...I need to find a dentist that'll dope me up! Anyway don't sweat it you'll be doped out of your mind and you probably won't remember anything...you'll probably fall asleep and when you wake up it'll all be over. At least I know that's how my Endoscopies on Demoral went!

Thanks guys. They called to confirm my appt. yesterday and I mentioned emet again and asked about anti-nausea meds and she said she was making a note in my chart and I'd have them so WHEW! On that one lol. Getting a bit nervous but not seriously so yet. So, that's good. I am trying to think of things to eat lol. I thinkt he main staples will be mashed potatoes, Jell-o and eggs lol.

Jess, at the risk of sounding dumb what is an EDG? I'm glad you had a good experience w/ Demerol and Versed. If it is what I had last time (different doctor so I don't know) than that is similar to how it was to me and not too worried lol.

mommy0f3, I will be getting anti emetics so that makes me feel a bit better. Good for you for standing your ground about the pain pills. I hate it when people try to push them on you.

Monica, I am in Florida. The dentist I am going to is a Peridontist (due to the implant) but I've seen ads int he yellow pages for regular dentists who use sedation for routine procedures. What do you need done?

Soluene, thank you for your well wishes. It is to be tomorrow (Thurs 8/11) at 10am. BLAH! lol

Thanks again guys! As soon as I am awake enough I will come on and let ya know how it went!

I SURVIVED! WHOO! lol. OK a bit dramatic, yes. So, I went yesterday and really didnt' have any nerves until we pulled up at the office. Then I signed in and used the restroom where I promptly began a bit of crying but nothing that would run my mascara lol. Anyhow I was calling in right away. The nurse was soooo sweet. My heart rate got to 123 at one point but was mostly between 100-105. I knwo that's totally irrelevant but I'm always fascinated by those machines. Anyhow I whined a little but once the drugs kicked in I was OUT! And that was nice. I remember little bits and pieces like them saying to send my Mom in that I could go, sort of walking to the car, etc but not much lol. However whatever the other doctor used last time was not the same as this one because this one I was w/it by the afternoon and walking around unassited. I was tired but not like last time. Anyhow I'm OK, didn't v*, wasn't even n*. Today I'm a little woozy sometimes but I think it's more from not being able to sleep that well proped up. Plus there aren't many things you can eat that don't require chewing LOL. So now I feel a little sick everyonce ina while but I think it's hunger. Also the bleeding was freaking me out because it was more htan I thought but when the dentist ofice called to check on me she said it was normal and nothing to freak about. Today is much less blood. And (knock wood it stays this way) the pain is minimal. I've taken Advil only (tho he gave me a perscription for perscription Motirn I've yet to needed it) between the Advil and ice packs I've been in good shape. If only I could chew lol. Anyhow sorry for making this so long, thanks again you guys for all your support! I was thinking of you guys and your experiences when I went in! Your'e the BESTEST!!! Hi, I'm so pleased everything went well for you - I knew you'd be just fine!

Foods I eat after extractions are such as mashed veggies (mashed carrots and swede together are tasty, so is butternut squash, and of course, potatoes or sweet potatoes); soups (with bread torn up and dropped in soup to soften); sloppy veggie stews/casseroles; scrambled eggs, rice pudding, yoghurts. Also if you put cereal in a bowl with plenty of milk and leave it until it goes soggy, that's fairly easy to eat, or you could just try oatmeal.

Hope your mouth heals up quickly for you, so that you can enjoy your food again!

Simplyme--EGD stands for (esophagogastroduodenoscopy). It is basically an upper endoscopy procedure, where they go in and look at your esophagus and stomach. They give you Demerol and Versed which pretty much knocks you completely out without you having to be intubated (tube in your throat to assist with breathing). They call it being in "twilight".

Anyway, glad to hear you did well!
