Okay.. I am trying to stay calm. My daughter is sick. Day camp called me today at work to go get her. She had a headache and was tired. I got my boyfriend to ride with me to pick her up. A couple minutes into the car ride home she started to vomit. Then she did again soon after. She says her tummy doesn't hurt, just her head and there is no fever. I've never really been through this alone before and have no idea what to do or think. If it were viral wouldn't there be a fever? Or, not always?

I put a call into the doctor asking what I should do. They sound like he's giong to want to see her to check for strep, but I'm nervous about taking her out. She is in bed asleep right now with a bucket by her and I feel semi safe with that. I don't want to take her anywhere. Especially not alone.

I asked the receptionist if anything like this was going around and she said a couple of weeks ago there was a stomach virus. I don't know what to do or think. Please help!

Oh.. and I sent the boyfriend to the store for popsickles, gingerale and gatorade.

I'm so sorry to hear that your daughter is sick. I suppose it could be viral, maybe not a sv, but just a viral infection. I've seen that a lot with children. Does her throat hurt at all? A lot of times when kids have strep, the first symptoms are headache/*v*, so that is probably why the doctor may want to see her. I certainly hope she feels better soon!

Jess, thanks for responding. This is a stupid question, but what is the difference between a viral infection and a stomach virus? I just talked to the doctor and he said that we could pass on the strep test for now unless she develops a sore throat or fever. He said there is a viral thing just like this going around, lasting 2-3 days. He told me to try gatorade (only about a teaspoon) every 10 min. 2 hours after her last vomiting episode. If she keeps it down, I can then increase. He was really nice about it, I was nervous explaining my situation, but I didn't know how to ask the questions I had for him without explaining it.

Ugh... this suck. I hope it's not3 days long. I so don't want to be doing this right now.

Hey Shiva, hang in there your doing great! It does sound like she just has a stomach virus, just keep your hands clean and try and not let her cough on you, and you should be okay. Usually sv's don't last too long, 2 days or so and she should be feeling a lot better. Usually once the v*ing stops then it does for good and then you get better, this is my experience anyways, so hang in there!

Is there any chance she could have a migraine? I know it is rare in kids, but when I was little one of the kids my mom babysat used to get migraines all the time and he v*d with every one of them. If her stomach doesn't hurt I doubt it is a stomach virus. Was she in the sun a lot today? If she got really hot and dehydrated it could happen too. I always gets bad headaches when I am in the sun a lot, and they always make me feel n*.

shiva, I hope that this isnt a stomach virus, but when my children were sick, theirs started with a headache. They also ran fever though. My husband and my oldest daughter were the only ones who complained about their stomach hurting when they had it. They only had the diarrhea though. My son and youngest daughter had the vomiting. However, they only vomited a couple times, and then it was just diarrhea. The diarrhea lasted for a few days though. When we took our children to the doctor when they had it, he said that it was just a viral infection. I think doctors use that diagnosis alot when they cant really pin-point any one thing.

I hope that you are doing ok, and that your daughter gets over the v'ing part quickly. Is she your only child? How old is she?

Thanks so much everyone for your replies and suppor. It really helps me to have people to discuss this with who understand my discomfort.

My daughter is 8. It hasn't been too hot here, but they are having olympic games week at day camp, which means she could have over exerted herself. She took a 2 hour nap and woke up with her head feeling a bit better. She begged me for food, I gave her a bit of gatorade. She kept the gatorade down and asked for food again.. Still no fever and no tummy ache or anything, so I let her have popsickles. The battle went on, so I just gave in and made her a piece of toast and told her untillmorning I wanted her to just have drinks after the toast. (night time always makes me so nervous.. even when she is well!)It has been 9 hours since it happened.

I did wonder about a possible migraine. I don't know much about them, though. It does seem kinda like a sick headache type thing more than a virus.. However, the other tummy virus she had that started with a headache had a high fever and she was extremely lethargic for 24 hours. But, the doctor did say thathe has seen this virus without a fever, soaccording to him it was quite possible. Right now she seems fine, so I really don't know what to think.

If she wakes up tomorrow still saying she feels fine do I just let life go on as normal or do I make her rest one more day and give her easy to digest food? Grandma invited her there, but for the first time I think I may feel better having her with me. (trust me.. odd feeling. But, this is what I've been working so hard toward) I know in retrospect this is no big deal. I mean.. my daughter vomited 2x this afternoon. Big whoop. But, to me it's huge. This is the moment that I anxiously anticipate all year round. I want to make sure I am handling things right and like a good mom should. Like I said before.. This is the first time we've dealt with this alone.

Thanks everyone for listening. I am really glad I found this place.

Yes, I think you should carry on as normal. If grandma offered to watch her tomorrow, go for it. You were there through the worst part, there is nothing wrong with you going back to work tomorrow, especially with her being in the lovable, capable care of her grandmother.

I hope she continues to feel fine and wakes up her normal self in the morning.

Oh man.. I'm sorry you had to go through that! Being in a confined space (your car) makes it that much worse! I would have been freaking out, too! Can you have somebody else take her to the doctor? Does anyone close to you know about your phobia or do you keep it to yourself? I would be nervous to even check on her; I know that sounds bad but it's true. I'm scared of having kids cuz I know they puke quite a bit when they are young. It seems as though she is fine today. No headache.. No fever.. Starving.. I told her I would make her lunch in a bit and am going to take her to her Grandma's later for the weekend. I could use the time to get the house cleaned and yard work done anyway..

I am so glad that she is better. Because it wasn't a huge ordeal, I think it gave me strength for next time. Now I'm not so scared because we got through this little ordeal just fine.

It is hard, but I was finding myself really wanting to be the caring mom, so it was pretty easy to check on her and help make her feel comfortable. I even cuddled on the couch with her and that suprised me. I just didn't want her to be afraid, you know?

It was hard and I am glad it seems to be over. I hope I am not challenged like this again for a while. It took a lot out of me, I am exhausted!

Thanks everyone for your caring words and concern. It means the world to me that you're all here. I appreciate it so much.

    Shiva--

I am glad she is feeling better and I'm proud that you handled it so well.

To answer your question earlier about a viral infection vs a sv. I used to work in a doctor's office and when people came in complaining of things like headache/body aches/fever/nausea, it was often dx as a viral infection--meaning a virus has attacked your body, not necessarily your stomach. They are quite common and can cause *v*, although it isn't quite the same as a sv. Usually with sv, you *v* more than once and tend to have some stomach pain with diarrhea. I'm not saying this is what you daughter had, but keep it in mind for future reference!

Gotcha! So basically a stomach virus only effects the digestive system and viral infections make people feel overall yuk (or can..)? Now that I think of it, that makes a lot of sense. Wow to you working in a doctor's office!!!

    Shiva,

It does not sound like she had a sv. It does sound like something
viral or just "a thing" for her. We have all had off days
where we either have D, headache, or something.

Yeah, I wonder if it's a change of season type of thing-like a new allergen because I woke up at 3 a.m. yesterday with a horrible headache and nausea. I'm glad your daughter is okay and I hope you are too! You handled it great!!

shiva, I haven't had a chance to head through all the posts, but as soon as you said that " her tummy isnt sore" and only her head hurts, no fever, it made me think maybe she may have hit her head at camp? A blow to the head can cause vomiting. And if it was caused by another kid, no one would want to admit to it.

she may not even remember it, especially if its a hit to the head. Kids can be rough and playing outside like they do it could happen. I would take her to the ER and have someone look at her head just incase...

I hope she's feeling better, I doubt this is a stomach virus.Edited by: Babydoll
