How do you guys do it? All three of my children are in school now, and I am terrified of them getting sick. I hate the ride to school every morning. Its about a 25-30 min ride. The school they go to is a great private school, I am so glad that we are able to send them there, but I hate living in this fear EVERYDAY!!!! How far do you guys have to ride to get your children to school? I think I am going to have to go get on something to help me with all this anxiety, ect ........

I just want to hear ya'lls experiences, ect ......

Thank you!!!!

I used to when my oldest daughter started school and she takes the bus. She enjoys it.

My kids are not prone to being car sick so after a few weeks, I figured they were not going to be sick.

Has you any of your children ever been sick in a car?

Well lets see, I give them multi-vitimins and give them hand sanitizers for school. I probably drive them nuts asking them about hand washing. I keep pretty busy up till the holidays and my oldest's birthday are over(January) Then after that I'm in hell. I find myself constantly questioning them and every one around me .... "Oh your freind was out today?Did she look sick yesterday? How sick?Pale?how pale?"I am really really gonna try to avoid listening to sv*stories AS WELL AS asking about sv*stories. Wish me luck-I'll need it!

Im not talking about them being car sick, Im talking about when they have a SV or something.

I did homeschool, but we decided to send them back to school, outside the home ................. We sent them back to the private school my oldest daughter once attended. Its about a 25-30 min ride form our house, but it will be so worth it. For the education, and just the whole overall experience.

madisonsmom, I have been thinking about you, havent seen you on the boards in a while. How are things going for you. PM me if you want to. (Or here is fine too)

Hi guys. Well I am not a model of how to handle yourself with elementary school- age children, because I pretty much just worry 24/7 aboutSV's when my kids are in school. If you charted it, the actual number of times they are sick does not even compare to the time I spend worrying that they will be. Completely irrational, but that's a phobia for you. Honestly Leigh, what you went through with your family this summer is about as bad as it gets. I had a horrible stretch with my daughter when she was 4 years old andcaught 4 SV's in a 6 month period. I could not freakin believe it. That pushed me over the edge, but it has never been that bad since. She is seven now, so hopefully that will never happen again. My son is 9 and only rarely catches them. One every couple of years - still too much for me though. If it's any comfort Leigh, I don't think having your kids in school will be as bad as youanticipate, and not as bad as this summer was for you.

Both of my kids go different private schools so I will spend two hours
in the morning and two hours in the afternoon everyday driving them to
and from schools for the next six years until my oldest enters high
school!!!!!! I have one worry and that is the v****. Last
year they both went to a school that was literally one mile from our
home. I figured if they got sick, I was so close to home.
Now it will be different and I am a wreck about it.

The best thing to do is just teach them proper handwashing, no touching face, give them a Purell bottle and not to share food or drinks.

I am also a nervous wreck myself. My daughter is just starting Kindergarden today. She went to Pre-K last year and that was the most stressing time in my life. She was so sick the whole year long. She missed like 50 something days of school last year. And the worst part was, almost 85% of the sicknesses were SV.

I was so miserable all year long. I worried day and night about when will be the next time she gets sick and it was controlling my life. And, the whole summer, she stayed well. Was not sick once. She wasn't around hardly anyone but family though. And, a few weeks ago, we attended a church function and a day later, she had a fever for like three days. She didn't v or d, but I don't know if maybe she felt like it but never did. She didn't eat very well either though in those 3 days. It just goes to show you that being around all those germs at school and other places is how those kids get sick. I hate that so much. I even thought about homeschooling her just so she wouldn't be sick all the time. But that would be hard because I work a full time job and I don't want her to miss out on any vital learning, I just wish I could protect her from the sicknesses. Does anyone feel like me. If so, how do you cope. I would love to hear some answers.

jennyleigh and maryp,

UGHHHH. I am so not looking forward to this school year.
When my oldest was little and went to preschool three mornings from
9-12, I never worried. Now that the kids are in 1st and 3rd
grades and I have this horrible carpool nightmare, I am a wreck.
My husband travels 40 percent of the time and I am left to deal with
the house, the kids, the old dog and cat, hermit crabs and my
business. It is so overwhelming. It was hard enough last
year when the kids' school was one mile away, but now ------ two hours
in the am and two hours in the afternoon for commuting. Plus
there are 67 days of the school year where my kids have different
school schedules. Last year this town was plagued by the
sv. It was constant from October to May except for a three week
respite in April so I am so nervous about this year. Is it June
yet?

My children are involved in several different activities with the school, so that means even more time on the road with them. I am so glad that they are into sports/cheerleader, ect .............. it just makes it hard on me. I wish we lived closer, but then that would mean being away from family. Whether we stay here, or sell our house and move, I will be sacrificing(sp) some kind of security. I dont know what to do, but I do know that this is the right decision for our children to have them in this school.

stella, are you doing a carpool? I admire you for doing that. I dont know if I could do it .............

I can identify with what you're saying but from a different point of view. I'm a student.

I'm a freshman at a university so I'm living on campus. At two of the
visitations I went to last year there was a bus tour of campus and all
the students who were doing it would comment that during the first year
you'll probably spend at lot of time at the university health center
whenver we passed it. That of course sent off alarm bells so I had to
know what that meant, and when I asked a few of the current students
they said they got really sick their first year. I haven't been able to
ask any of them what it was with that they were sick, but it lurks in
my mind.

I've been moved in for about 4 days and there have been a couple times
when I've been so jittery that I drove back to sleep in my room at my
parents house (that and because I really miss my mattress, the ones in
the dorms are not very comfortable). Classes start tomorrow so maybe
that'll help but I'm so nervous. I really do not want to get sick on
campus it would be so embarrassing. I don't know how I'm going to
handle it either so I can't really give any advice to you parents.
Sorry.

Jennyleigh,

No, I am not carpooling. When I write carpool, I mean I do it
solo. I have to leave the house at 7:00 a.m. to get my son to
school by 8:00. It is exactly 4.5 miles from my house but
the traffic is miserable in the morning. (I live near a big city
so traffic is always an issue no matter how you slice and dice
it.) Then I have to get my daughter to school by 8:15. Then
I do the same thing in the afternoon. It starts at 2:15 until
4:15 p.m. I am so stressed about it.

stella, I thought my ride was bad. Our ride is about 25-30 mins one way, but most of the ride is interstate. I couldnt imagine having to sit on traffic that long, even without having emet, my children would probally drive me nuts, lol!!!! Somehow, we will get through this, because we know what we are doing is great for our children.
I try to keep telling myself this.
