I hate it when people go shopping or whatever when they know they dont
feel good. Yesterday I was at work and I heard a group pass buy and a
father/grandfather says to a young girl 'you feeling better yet? I hope
that mint I gave you helped' she quickly said 'im fine.' well about
half hour later, Id ont know if this was related or not, but I heard
that some customer V* outside of the store on the pavement or
something. UGH! Idiots. At least it wasnt in the store. But same kind
of thing happened to me at another job when I was really young (14 or
so) I worked at a grocery and had to clean the bathrooms... this lady
runs up to me and shes like I was just sick in the sink and the toilet,
I tried to clean it up but I Thought I should tell you. Also on the
floor in the shoe dept! I freaked out so bad.. I went and got someone
else, there was no way. I quit the job shortly after. No more restrooms
for me. I just wish people werent so stupid.. if you dont feel good,
dont go out shopping. Iiiidioootsss

Yuck--well at least you had warning to not go outside at that time. It would have been worse if you had just walked up on it.

I understnad what you mean and it can't have been nice for you but....I have to say I see the other side of it. I panic constantly about being sick in public, I constantly feel sick, partly due to stomach problems (which have never made me v* just n*) and partly due to anxiety. I have told myself that I have to get on with life and if it happens then I will have to deal with it then. otherwise I would spend all my time in my room and never go out - just in case it happend. I'm sorry but I worry that people would look at me and shout at me for doing 'it' in public. i imagine them thinking exactly what you do.

I had to go to the doctors once and there was this woman in the waiting room bieng sick in a bucket! Why diddnt they put her in another room as if we want to see that, even people that havnt got our phobia would find that off putting.

I remember one time I showed up at the Dr's to see my therapist about emet, and a woman came into the waiting room, she told the receptionist she couldn't stop being sick...yeah that helped me feel good! Thankfully they DID put her in another room. I don't know why people go out when they are ill...even with things like flu. They seem to wanna carry on and deny they are sick. Newsflash: they just spread their cold/flu with us!Edited by: hippychick

I hate that too! I remember once going to the mall and I went into one of the resturants and the cashier was talking about how the girl behind her (The other Cashier) Had gotten sick all over the place and they JUST cleaned it up. After that I didn't want to eat in there anymore! If you aren't feeling well DON'T GO ANYWHERE! Don't go to work! Don't go to the mall! Don't go ANYWHERE!

You know I really see both sides to the argument. People should stay
home when they're actually sick, but then again there's people like me
and probably many other people on this site who if they stayed home
everytime they felt a little sick they'd never leave the house!

I was at a dr's office once, and a girl came in who said that she could not stop v*ing. Her sister was with her and was talking to the receptionist, and I was looking at this girl, and I swear she was turning green. I interuppted the sister and told her that her sister was not looking so hot, and they quickly went to the bathroom. She did not stop v*ing!!! I have to admit, I felt horrible for her. It must have been so painful.

I definitely see two sides to this because I am a single woman. I live alone. I have some friends and a sister, but I don't generally like to call on them to run my errands. My sister lives 1 1/2 hours away anyway. If I were sick and needed food, medicine, or other supplies, I would either have to go out to the store and get them, or I would have to go without. So, unless I were completely immobilized, I would wind up going out.

This really confirms my fears that people would not be helpful and make you feel worse - if that is at all possible. My mum always tells me that if 'it' did happen in public then someone woud help you but now i really don't think so.

Willow, we just think this way because we have a phobia, there are many other people who do not have emet who would help out if you were to get ill in public, I'm sure. Someone who had a phobia about blood would not be likely to run to somebody's assistance that was bleeding, whereas that wouldn't bother me so I would help out if I could, I'd just have to let a non-emet help out if v* were involved.

There was an incident once, where I was waiting for a bus and as my bus pulled up the driver was shaking his head for me not to get on. I didn't know what was happening -turned out one of the passengers had taken really ill, had passed out, come round and v*ed everywhere. The bus was evacuated, apart from the ill lady and her husband, and a replacement bus sent. A lady who had helped the ill person sat opposite me and asked if I had any tissues as she had v* all over her and needed to clean herself up a bit. I gave her the tissues and she just kept saying, "That poor lady, I hope she will be ok" - the fact she had a stranger's v* on her didn't seem to bother her that much! So you see, there will always be somebody around who will help out, just probably not an emetophobe!

Oh for petes sake make me feel guilty willow.

Im saying this because it IS stupid to go out if you feel sick. If you
have a mental illness like most of us do, yes most of you are going to
want to stay home when you dont feel well, and sometimes force yourself
to leave even if you dont. We have to do that, but Im not talking about
emets. That is different. Im talking about normal everyday people who
know the difference between feeling sick and not feeling sick, which is
something most people can tell by at least age 10, much like knowing
when we have to go to the bathroom or not. The other people at work
helped the person out apparently, they ran up there with a plastic bag
at least, but me being the way I am, of course Im not going to support
them. Im going to say go the heck home and be sick there, not at my
store so that Im floating in your germs and panicking all day. I cant
begin to tell you how much thats ruined the past two days for me, Ive
had to medicate myself way too much just to stay at work. I just needed
to vent about it because my life has been made miserable by people like
that, just because they wanted to shop for shoes when their stomach
hurt and they shoudlve been at home resting. Same with people with
colds, thanks for coming in and leisure shopping while you sneeze and
hack and blow your nose so I can float in your germs at my workplace
all day. Bah! Adults should know better. Period.

Another one! I work pubs and Ive had to clean up some terrible stuff including v. I once had to walk someone out to a taxi and she did it all over my shoes! Why dont they go home when they have had enough, I wouldnt have served them in that state, but the other barstaff do on their shift and when I come on duty they are already barfing! .Next day the customer comes in as if nothings happened. Cheeky!

Willow, honey, you sound just like me. While I agree with the other posters that if you KNOW you are sick, i.e. have a virus or any other illness, you should NOT go out. But, like you I am always feeling very sick and nervous too due to anxiety when i am otherwise healthy, and sometimes it comes on very suddenly when I am out in public. Although in my heart o hearts I know it is likely to never happen (if it hasn't yet, why would it?), it would still be comforting to know people woldn't look at me likea leper if God forbid my nervous stomach ever got the best of me. it is traumatic enough to do it in front of people without having people scorn you. But in my experience, most people, even strangers, are genuinely concerned about others well being. I've heard more "are you oks" in my life then "disgusting!!"

Even emets are good at heart. if you saw someone throwing up in public, whats the worst you would do? Run away? I woiuld actually prefer it if people would run away from me when sick!!

That's a good point actually. Even an emet probably wouldn't scorn
someone for being sick although they might run away crying....atleast I
know there's a good chance that's what I'd do.

I also identify with what you said about wanting them to run away. I
don't like the thought of people staring at me while I'm being sick
either.

I dont mind anyone been sick, but when people get drunk and know theyve had too much it annoys me cos theyre too drunk to care about where they do it, if someone was genuinely ill or panicking Id help them without question, most people thatsaw anyone being sick would forget about it and carry on with their shopping as its not headline news is it.Edited by: suzy.o

wow I totally understand about people like that. I am so tired of
hearing these people come to school and then spend all day whining
about how they feel awful and were sick last night or w/e. If my
friends say things like that, I'll say something like "Do you want to
go home?" and they'll always say no. -_-;;; its so stupid.. I remember
this one time, my friend came to class, told everyone how she was
really sick the night before, actually being sick, and that she still
felt horrible. Then she went home. Now what is the point of that -_-''
except to get others exposed! (pretty sure she just had food poisoning
though). It would be great if people just stayed at home if they felt
sick. But for me, sometimes I think I feel sick, but when I go out I
realize I was just nervous about something.. but then again, I guess
emets really don't count lol. I don't go out if I know I'm sick with
actual symptoms though.

i remember going to a club in new york city when i was younger, and i
had to go to the bathroom so bad, i drank like 5 bottles of water
because it was so packed in there you sweat if you think too hard.

i went into the bathroom and EVERY toilet had v* on it somewhere. i had
to go so bad i just held my breathe, hovered, and did it. i seriously
was panicking the rest of the time there. all though i know this was
because there was underage kids there drinking, and so many drugs
because at this club it was like drug central... i know it was from
that but when you see it you panick. i do anyways

dont do that sh*t if youre going to make yourself sick.

i have a friend who said to me once "just drink til you throw up" im
like"why the hell would i want to do that" and he goes "throwing up
drunk is the best cuz you can keep drinking after you throw up" thats
so gross!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It so annoys me when people keep on drinking and drinking and just v* right there for all to see in the pub. Why the hell don't they at least go to the toilet?

I have even come across people who drink too much, go and v* in the loo, then come out saying, "Right, good, I can continue drinking now." Do they realise they v*ed because they had poisoned their systems and to continue drinking is putting their bodies under harm.

I do love a drink like the best of them, but if I feel even slightly queesy (or suspect another drink would make me feel ill) when out I would absolutely not let another drop past my lips. It's lovely to feel merry, but what's good about feeling so out of control you can hardly walk?

You're absolutely right about it being harmful to keep drinking after you've thrown up from drinking.

When I was at orientation they did a whole big presentation about
drinking because my school is kind of a party school. Anyway one thing
they showed us was the steps of intoxication and vomiting was pretty
high up there. I think the only things that were higher then that were
loss of bladder control, unconciousness, coma, and death.

So if you get so drunk you throw up then you definetly don't want to just wipe your mouth off and move on to your next round.

Not only that but most of them are on benefit, and spend all their money on it. I love drinking and it helps my anxiety but I would never go so far that I,d v. I t would put me off it for life and I wouldnt have anything to calm me down. They should realise they have a problem instead of us having to witness it.

Theres another thing! People who forse theirselves to work because they say they cant afford to have a day off. They are sick all day and do nothing but complain how bad they are, isnt it amazing how they always pick you to sit near or talk to when they have a stomach v, even though they diddnt want to know you before!
