Default Wisdom teeth coming out soon - I need advice please!

So my bottom two wisdom teeth have to come out ASAP. I'm always scared of v*ing, but the absolute LAST time I'd want to v* would be right after having surgery in my mouth! That sounds like the worst/scariest thing ever.

I'm 20 now, but when I was 8 (I wasn't emet yet) I had general anesthesia to have my tonsils taken out. After the surgery, I woke up and v*d. I don't know if it's from swallowing too much blood or the anesthesia, but either way I don't want to risk it again.

What kind of sedation is the least likely to make me v*? Local anesthesia? General anesthesia with an anti-emetic? Laughing gas?
Also, does swallowing too much blood make you v*? I read on a forum somewhere that a girl v*'d blood for 24 hours after the surgery! Is this common?!

Swallowing blood can definitely make you sick. May people get an upset tummy from having general anestesia. I've had general anestesia 3 times in the last 18 montha and never threw up. I did get pretty nauseated once though but I'm pretty sure that had to be from having my gallbladder removed. Haha. You can always ask them for IV antiemetics during surgery and a prescription afterwards. They also put a scopalomine patch on me in recovery which does amazing things for nausea!

Thanks so much for responding! I haven't heard of a scopalomine patch, I'll have to ask about it.

Another thing I'm nervous about is the antibiotics :/ I'm on them right now for an infection, and I hate the idea of being on them again soon. Its so bad for the stomach!

Okay, I'll give you the lowdown on getting wisdom teeth out, haha! I had 3 out quite a while ago and was just as scared about the exact things you are. First, I was up front with the dentist and told him. He "promised" me I wouldn't get sick. He also had a really nice office with rugs everywhere. He gave me an IV with valium, decadron for swelling, and I forget what else. He also said I wouldn't swallow any blood, because yes, that does make you sick. When I woke, I felt fine, but realllly tired and unable to get up for a while. Also, I didn't take the narcotic pain killers he prescribed, because those can also make you sick. I just took two ibuprofen and was fine. I didn't have antibiotics either. So definitely tell your dentist your fears, ask questions, and that way you all will be on the same page. You will be fine, I'm sure!! Keep us posted and good luck!!

I had my wisdom teeth out, and although they were impacted, I opted for just freezing. It really didn't hurt, there was some pressure, but I felt fine. I know if they do put you out, they will give you anti-emetics so you don't get sick. They don't want you to get sick after mouth surgery either, it's not good for the open cuts or the stitches. Really, you will be fine. The worst part is the tenderness and swelling after the fact, and that is totally not bad at all.

Hey there! I had my wisdom teeth out in October of 2011 when I was 16. I wasn't very emet at the time and I had general anesthesia at my oral surgeon as they had to cut into my gums to remove the teeth (I only had the top two out).
I have to say it was quite an easy experience! I was tired for about a half an hour and then felt totally normal. My mom only allowed me to eat soup at first because she thought I might v* but I was totally fine! I ate the soup and was even hungry at dinner. I took the pain meds prescribed by my surgeon and ate squishy foods for the rest of the week haha. I did get a stomach ache from my antibiotics but no n* v* or d*.
The most annoying part of the whole thing was the stitches as they sorta disintegrate in your mouth but mine started coming undone beforehand. I remember being bored in my physics class in school and batting the string back and forth with my tongue LOL
    Don't worry you'll be fine

i was 16 when i had my wisdom teeth out (4 yrs ago). i went to an oral surgeon and i had general anesthesia. i did not throw up or even feel nauseous afterward. i remember i was very out of it after waking up, and i went home right after. my mom drove me and i barely remember anything from the time i woke up to walking to the car. i was so out of it that even if i did throw up, i don't think i would have even cared.. haha. they will likely tell you to fast 8-12 hours before the procedure which will lessen the possibility of you having an upset stomach afterward. anesthesia affects everyone differently and there's a variety of reasons why people get sick. it only took them maybe 10-15 mins to get my wisdom teeth out, and it should probably be similar for you.. this is significant because it's a very short time, meaning they don't need to give you very much anesthesia at all, so less likely you will get sick. i didn't have any problems with it and i doubt you will either, but just relax and get it over with. it's a good idea to get your wisdom teeth out now and just get it over with.. the older you are the more serious it is.

I had mine taken out a few years ago. I asked them to give me an anti-emetic in my IV and they had no problem doing so. I told them my mom gets sick on anesthesia and I didn't want to risk it on top of the pain. They completely understood. I didn't feel nauseous at all afterward.

Hey k10! I got my wisdom teeth out in November of 2011. I have never had surgery before this let alone anesthesia. So I was pretty nervous, not as an emet, but more for surgery in general. So since this was my first time with anesthesia, I kinda had no idea what would happen to me. But luckily, I went under easily. Woke up afterwards totally loopy and emotional, but felt fine. Never felt n* once, not even after taking Vicodin. I know every person is different, but my first surgery experience was pretty smooth. You should be okay And with swallowing blood, I'm pretty sure I swallowed a good bit before I got home. Once I was home, I let it drain out of my mouth over the sink. Nothing too gross or terrifying. Never felt sick. So I'm thinking you'll be okay. And if you're only getting two teeth out, then that's better too! I got all 4 taken out at once. <3
