I've taken diphenhydramine as a sleep aid before, it's not excellent. I found that it made me sleepy/dizzy but it disturbed my sleep enough that I wasn't rested upon waking up. It's used as an anti-emetic for motion sickness sometimes. I saw on wiki that the other version has promethazine, which is an antiemetic, so it would probably have the same effect. Don't overdo the dosage, or you'll feel bad. Also, they only work short term, your body will get used to it pretty quickly. You could try herbal remedies instead, with valerian and passionflower. I find them to be more effective.
Check out the active ingredient. In the UK it could be promethazine (phenegran-blue box) or diphenhydramine. In the US it would be doxyalamine succinate or maybe diphenhydramine. Most of these drugs would lead to drowsiness and if anything should have an antiemetic effect. They also can cause dry mouth and can tend to dehydrate you, so make extra sure to look after your dental hygiene and drink plenty of water or highly water containing beverages. Be very very careful that you don't mix it with anything else without checking with a doctor or pharmacist or at least using a drug interaction checker like this : http://drugs.com and if you have any doubts ask before you act.
I find melatonin helps me to sleep, no weird side effects or drowsy/groggy feeling. I have promethazane for n* and I would not reccomened anything with that in it for sleep, it makes me so groggy I can barley function.
