Default How quick did your emet come on?

Im just wondering for you was it a gradual thing or was it fast? For me, I started to have panic attacks for no reason and I didnt know what they were then they started to happen everyday at school, I would feel ill with them then panic, and then bam. Fear of v* HELLO! Or atleast thats the theory we have come up with, haha.
So really it took a few months but from being okay to being un able to go to school was about a week.
    How about you?

Your story sounds like mine. It came on gradual. It didn't happen until after I had kids. Than in 2006 I started having panic attacks after my youngest and husband got a SV really bad. I thought I was having a heart attack and went to the ER. They treated me like a heart attack out patient and ran tests. The Dr finally said it was a panic attack. I started counseling and he diagnosed me with emetophobia and gave me this website.

I got emet as a result of puking in my sleep at age 8. Most of us developed emet as a result of a traumatic episode of vomiting at age 6-10. If that moment was the first time I was emet, I was one within days. Doug

I developed a fear of vomiting when I was 11 but I wouldn't call it a phobia because I only thought about it when it was happening or near me. I wasn't careful where I ate, washing my hands other than after using the restroom, and even caught a couple bugs and I wasn't even scared, although I never vomited.

In 2010 I experienced a traumatic event and it gradually started worrying me that I would vomit and then in October 2011 a horrible bug spread like wildfire through my family. Thankfully I escaped with only diarrhea and mild nausea but the waiting and anticipation was enough for me to develop a full blown phobia. I'm doing better but I know it's a matter of time until the phobia rears in ugly head and I slide back.

When I was 9 I had a sv and after that I started fearing v* but after a little while it went away so I don't know if i did develop the phobia when I was 9 or I developed it properly when I was 21 when I had a sv. Since then I have struggled on and off with emet. I'm almost 23 now so it's been nearly 2 years. Right now my emet isn't too bad, it goes like that. When it's summer I deal with it much better but when it's winter that's when my phobia gets bad again

No idea actually. I've had this phobia as long as my memories go back and I don't know when my emet actually began. I cannot think of an episode specifically that caused my emet. I was just too young when it started to remember. My very earliest memories actually involve me concerned about puke. I do wish I knew sometimes what the trigger was, but I have resigned myself to the reality that I will never know why or what created the phobia. I have had ups and downs, times that were better with the phobia and times I never wanted to leave my basement corner away from everyone. Right now I actually think I'm doing a little better than I have ever been. Working on my exposure therapy a lot this summer so come next winter I will be able to handle cold and flu season better. I am determined to end this phobia. It's taken too many years of my life away from me already. It took my past, but it can't have my future.

I find it really interesting that some of you have had emet develop later in life. I have had it for as long as I can remember so I don't know what life is like without it! Good for you Dairyfreelife, I am trying to expose myself to see if I can desensitise a bit, let me know how you get on!

I was 21. I didn't know it at the time but I was having my first ever panic attack and I was so nauseous and gagging like crazy. I thought I had a stomach bug and WANTED to vomit because I knew I'd feel better if I did and that horrible nausea and retching would finally stop! But even though I had a full stomach my body just would not vomit; I just kept gagging. Weird. I believe it was in that moment when my brain connected feeling sick to my stomach to panic because it was after that incident that I developed both emetophobia and panic disorder which led to agoraphobia. IT WAS AWFUL!!! However, I was healed of it all very quickly too ― thanks to God. So it can leave almost as quickly as it came.

Are you a cured emetophobe? Interestingly, I had the same experience recently as you and it helped my emetophobia. I was panicking and gagging over and over with food in my stomach but no vomit. Then a few weeks later I caught a mild bug and handled it quite well. I realized it isn't the gagging or vomit that scared me but the nausea and helplessness.
