    Default Rice and bacillus cereus

    Hiya,

I used to love rice but avoid it now due to the bacillus cereus spore thing. I want to totally destroy it before I eat rice, Will a pressure cooker destroy the spore and bacteria? Will any pressure cooker do or does it have to be some special one. It would be great if anyone could provide some insight into this as this issue is really bugging me!

    Thanks,
    Dan

As far as I know it's only left over rice you have to worry about?

Yes, but being an emetophobe I'm extra paranoid! Do spices slow down the bacteria growth? What about dishes like rice pudding, does bacillus cereus still affect that? I'm too scared to eat rice at all, I'm concerned it may produce toxins in my stomach even if I eat it straight away after cooking as I have slow digestion and severe indigestion problems.

I have no idea about rice pudding but if its stores properly it should be fine. I think it's more in restaurants where they cook a huge batch and it sits for awhile. I make rice at home all the time and have never had a problem. I think if your making it your self your fine, and it's supposed to be easy on your digestion. It's one of the foods reccomened to eat after having an SV.

I get easily freaked out over rice too, but have done lots of research and freshly cooked rice eaten straight away poses no risk. The bacteria found in rice cant be killed by cooking but only becomes harmful if its left at room temp for more than an hour after cooking. Well two hours but I prefer to be extra careful! I rarely eat leftovers but if my hub wants to keep any spare rice after cooking we cool it immediately by rinsing then its covered and put in the fridge. This is the guidelines for rice safety. Hope that helps xxx

Thanks Lucy. Rice I usually eat is like curried rice with spices and stuff or rice pudding, unfortunately they cannot be cooled down quickly by rinsing. But yeah, I guess I need to eat them straight away when cooked.

I freaked out about this when I first found out about it and I still won't eat rice in restaurants (or even worse, at buffets!!!) but I do eat home cooked stuff and the microwaveable ones too and have never had any issues! I don't ever reheat it but I think it's all good really!
