    Default This coming Thursday...

    Hey everyone,

So, I dropped my dad off at the airport on Sunday afternoon. Everything seemed fine. Apparently he started feeling sick on his flight, pretty nauseated. He didn't throw up (never has in his life!) and from what I understand, the nausea is gone but he's been achy yesterday and today. He gets home on Thursday and I'll be picking him up.

The question is, what does this sound like to everyone? It doesn't quite sound like the flu, but it doesn't sound like noro either. It's closer to the flu, but I don't recall the flu starting with nausea. Either way, I don't want to catch what he has, and I'll be stuck in a car with him for 40 minutes!

    Any help is greatly appreciated!

    It could be anything really.
Lately I've had odd days where i've felt achy/tired/other flu like symptoms, but they usually are just where I've been under a lot of stress/have been run down.
It definitely doesn't sound like noro or sv* as he likely would have v* or d*, so I wouldn't worry about that. And anyway even if he did have that, as long as he didn't v* near you and you washed your hands after seeing him/didn't touch your face then you'd unlikely catch anything anyway.

So please don't worry about anything. If he does have a little cold or the flu just mention politely you really don't want to catch anything so if he feels like sneezing/coughing, could he please make sure he does it discreetly such as into a tissue or whatever. That way it'll minimise you picking up on his germs.

But don't worry it really doesn't sound serious, I'm sure you won't catch anything

I agree, it doesn't sound like a sv that you could get. Maybe he has a cold or a regular old virus or maybe food just didn't agree with him. He isn't contagious so I think you are totally fine.

It could be anything. Regardless, you'll be fine. Being in the car with someone isn't dangerous nor can you catch anything simply from sitting next to them for 40 minutes. My mother was actively vomiting hours before we arrived to see her last weekend. I was a nervous wreck about my boys and husband. Nobody caught anything. If we can do it, you can do it! Besides, Sunday to Thursday is a long time. An adult is contagious on average for 72 hours following a bug (kids are longer), so there's truly nothing to fear.

I guess part of the problem is that he's STILL not feeling well...still very achy and overall lousy. I'm starting to realize the phobia has turned into more than just fear of vomiting...it's become a general fear of getting sick, with emphasis on fear of vomiting.

But, are you guys saying that 72 hours after my dad was showing symptoms, he's not contagious anymore?

No, it really depends on what he has. But honestly, I think it's VERY unlikely that he has ANYTHING that you could catch just sitting next to him in a vehicle. There are tons of random little viruses going around. If he doesn't cough or sneeze in your face it's unlikely that you'll come down with anything. You'll be ok!

Beyond that, with a lot of viruses, like the flu, you're actually MORE contagious beforehand than after. That's not the case with Norovirus, but with many. So, it's very likely that he was actually MOST contagious when you took him to the airport, and you're FINE! I honestly don't believe you have anything to fear.

Thanks for all the support, everyone. I really appreciate it. Talked with pops tonight, he suspects he had some kind of food poisoning from eating the buffet style snacks in the airport crown room (he travels. A LOT. As such, he gets these "privileges" haha)

that sounds like the cause. I'm sure you will be fine, really. I would honestly tell you if I thought there was a real risk.

Achy always makes me think flu... also being on a plane doesn't help nausea. I don't think you're at risk at all! Stay positive if you can

Thank you! Just picked him up, he seems well enough and was eating beef jerky so I figure at least his stomach is feeling fine. Thanks again everyone!
