Default Off topic! Looking for someone in uk to see where's best holiday towns in England lol

Ok so totally off topic but we're looking to spend a week in England coming down from Scotland but clueless as where would be a good holiday atmosphere town. There will be 3 kids with us and we were hoping to stay away from Pontins this year and book a hotel. We've been to Liverpool, London, and southport I'm really trying to find somewhere that's like southport I loved this town but we've been 2 years in a row and looking for a change.

    Hi Dxxr,

I live in England but lived in Edinburgh for 5 years. I think it depends on the kind of holiday you're looking for e.g. beach based, country-based, sight-seeing? I haven't actually been to Southport so I'm not sure if I know of anywhere similar.

    County-wise
Cornwall is perfect for sandy beaches and ice creams! (particularly towns like Port Isaac, St.Ives, Padstow, Tintagel etc.- if you've seen Poldark- it's based in Cornwall) and Devon also has pretty countryside (more rolling hills than the rocky landscape in Cornwall).

Shropshire and Herefordshire have stunning countryside and lots of market towns (think 'The Shire' in 'Lord of the Rings').

I think there are some pretty nice seaside towns in Lincolnshire (I've only been to Skegness, which is ok but not the best!). Lincoln itself is worth a visit.

'Oxford' has nice architecture, lots of museums and plenty to do, Henley-on-Thames (which is close in Oxfordshire) is a beautiful town based around the Thames with lots of cafes.

York, Bath, Cambridge are all historically interesting and perfect places to shop.

I hope you find somewhere that suits your family. Maybe look at Visit England. This article discusses some of the main areas that tourists visit: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/de...n-England.html

You can't beat the West Country particularly Devon, Dartmouth has got to be one of the best places ever, you have 5 miles of sandy beach, a bustling town full of independent shops, fantastic restaurants (fancy and traditional fish and chip shops) a beautiful harbour where you can travel up the river Dart, beautiful cliff walks, a steam railway and good pubs. Along the coastline are lots of private quiet beaches, the sea is clean and clear. If you travel outside Dartmouth you can visit Paignton zoo, Torquay, which is a huge traditional seaside town (lots of amusement arcades, souvenir shops and the pier) Dartmoor National Park (it's a zoo but without cages) and many pretty little towns like Salcombe, Kingsbridge, Totnes and Brixham. All have the seaside vibe but Salcome is classy, Totnes is very arty and a little hippyish, Kingsbridge is traditional and Brixham has a beautiful harbour, there are so many walks. If you decide to come to Devon have a look at Coast and Country self catering holiday homes. Also our Devon climate is a little warmer than anywhere else in the Uk!

Thanks for your replies that's loads of info.. Anytime I try google stuff everything that looks really good seems to come up around Devon but unfortunately for us that would mean over 8 hours driving time to get there right now I'm googling the distances of all the other names you's have given me lol I'm hoping to get somewhere under 5 hours away I'm in ayr so im pretty sure it's anything as far as Manchester .. I really loved southport but was really hoping to get another town similar just not the same place. Liverpool was a disaster for us we nearly ended up in Wales trying to find the town centre lol I'm just looking for a nice sea side resort kind of place nice beaches and amusement places etc for the kids

So you want somewhere more northern then? What about north Wales? Some towns in north Wales are not that great (sorry, no offence) but Llandudno is lovely. It's not posh or fancy but it's a big town (lots to do) with a beautiful sea front and very long pier.

Manchester would be a city break , not relaxing but lots going on, great shops, cafes, museums. You're also close to the peak district there if you like the countryside. What about the Lake District? Beautiful countryside and lots to do for kids in Ambleside etc, Beatrix potter world and so on. Also, maybe try merseyside again, you could incorporate a beach break to Formby (up the Coast from Liverpool, lovely beaches there ) and you could base yourself there and do a day trip to Liverpool?
