    UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGh.

I HATE WHEN PEOPLE SAY THIS.

My grandma was sick and my good friends (who I hung out with) mom was sick. And by sick I mean throwing up.

    I'm so scared.

Don't you just wish you could nix those words from the English language??? Don't be scared. You will be okay. Even if the worst thing happens, you will be okay. But, there is no reason to assume that even if something is "going around" you are going to get it. Take your vitamins, drink lots of water and wash your hands.

I don't know what to do. I work with so many people, I'm with my family/boyfriend 24/7. I can't avoid it.

I'm making such an effort to stay away and keep clean and healthy...but I hear of so many people getting sick andit makes me so scared.

Aughh, I was just talking to my sister yesterday about feeling ill and it apparently possibly being related to allergies and she said to me: "There are loads of things which cause sickness, it's probably something which is going around. There are a ton of stomach viruses going round at the moment."

That was oh so comforting! Haha. Anyway, I'd love to ban those words too. Don't worry about it too much, because from all you hear it seems that there are "things going round" quite a lot of thetime, but you hardly ever catch them. I mean people always have colds but you only ever really get one every month or so. Your immune system can handle it.

you know what?? it's always going around, so it seems really stupid when people talk about it like that. i mean, we don't say to one another "hey! look.. the sky.. it's blue" it's very annoying to me that people love to talk so much about it in public. (yes, i know we do too, but we are an exception! haha!)

I hate thpse words too. I post on a baby circles for babies that were born in may 2003 and I always read stuff like "Well the whole family has it." It scares the crap out of me. I can remember last week on Thursday I went to the gym and to take a spinning class. The instructor was late and she proceeded to tell everyone her "son caught that s/v thats going around." I wanted to walk right out of class. During class I was sweating so bad but I refused to use my towel to wipe my face off b/c I didn't want my hands touching my face. I haven't heard from, her since. Wonder if anyone else in her family got it. Ugh!

I want to go to the place where it is NEVER going around. Where is that and when is that? I am so tired of people talking about SV's everywhere I go. I was shopping yesterday and a girl I had not seen in ages came over to talk and we discussed that our kids get colds a lot and I said thankfully my son doesn't get them that often, and then she said IT.... "Well, I just got over V*ing for a few days and I kept my husband and daughter away the whole time." I quickly said, "Good to see you..i"m in a hurry." Why on earth did I need to know that? Anyway, lets all find the place where "IT" never goes around.

I agree. What you've said here is exactly why everyone could, if he/she wanted, never worry about that phrase again.

It's one of those phrases/sentences that lacks any real meaning. It's just filler, something to say. There are always germs, and people are always sick, so the sentence can't really mean a thing. It's not like the person who says it has identified the illness that’s going around and where it’s going around. I’ve heard people lump colds and sv together under the banner of “there’s something going around.”

So, to us, in our minds, the phrase means, “You are in imminent danger of catching a stomach virus. You are doomed.” Well, that’s not what the people who are saying it mean at all. They’re just saying the same thing as “Hi, how are you?” “Fine, thanks.” “Bye, Have a nice day.” Those are all just things to say. The cashier behind the counter doesn’t really care if we have a nice day or not. The person who said, “There’s something going around.” Or, “It’s going around” doesn’t really have a clue either as to who, what, where, when, and why anything is going around or not. They’re saying it because Aunt Matilda had a cold last week when they drove her to get her bunions looked at by the podiatrist, and it’s winter, spring, summer, or fall, so of course, “something’s going around.”

So, one thing that we could do is intervene in our process of attributing meaning to the empty words of this sentence. When we start to tell ourselves after hearing that sentence that we are doomed, we could counter with another thought that the sentence has no real meaning and that we are safe and fine. Or you could make up whatever positive thought would best counteract the doom thought.
