One of my worst food-fears has become imminent! I have been invited to a whole day worth of party-A SPIT-ROAST!!!!

I really want to go to this party but im so worried that im gonna get sick. To make matters worse its the peak of summer in Australia, it was 44 degrees where i live- another one of my worst fears is being sick when its hot .

Does anyone know how likely getting sick from a spit roast is? It just seems to me that the meat will sit there for so long just getting warm and develpoing bacteria. Am i freaking out needlessly?

Sorry I can't help on the spit roast info front as I don't eat meat. Just wanted to say you could always pretend you are vegetarian so get to eat some safer foods!

Is it possible to just avoid the meat and only eat the other stuff? Who really cares if you actually eat the meat. Next, is 44 degrees really warm? I think 44 is kinda cold and not that it would make a difference as to whether I would eat the meat or not, but I would not spend the day outside in 44 degree weather.

You mean 44 C, right? Holy hot! I agree with the pp's, just avoid the
meat and mayo-salad type things. If anyone asks just say that you had
a large plate of the meat and it was wonderful, and you're stuffed now.

i think he means 44C... thats about 108F. i would just try to avoid the spit roast at all costs... blonde question -- is it pork? if its beef or lamb you can actually eat them raw, but i guess its a pig. espeially if its hot... you could say you ate loads eirlier and dont want more? wil there be other food? good luk, try not to worry, im sure you'll be fine.

I alwyas forget that cc thing...oops.sorry. Avoid the meat and some side dishes that might be questionable. You can always say you just aren't that hungry. And by the way, 108 is way too hot to be out and with any food.

What is a spit roast? Is it like a BBQ? I would just say avoid the things with dairy in them and eat something before you go, therefore you won't be as hungry. You can always eat bread and salad with no dressing. Never underestimate the power of drinking too much punch (with booze) or lemonade too just to fill up the stomach and prevent dehydration.

You might also take advantage of this opportunity and bring extra bags of ice and big bowls so people can put their foods on ice to keep them cool for everyone else. Tell them you know it is hot outside and don't want to risk anyone getting sick, so you brought extra ice for that exact purpose. Big disposable baking tins work nicely to store ice in when placed under dishes and the the baking tins aren't expensive --- consider it an investment in the health of everyone.

Hmmm, could you say it's your New Year's resolution to eat less meat or if it's not a pig that's roasting say you are cutting out red meat from your diet. Or just say you don't have too much of an appetite so will skip the spit roast and nibble on snacks instead.

    From the wilkipedia:

"A spit is a long metal rod used to hold food while it is being cooked over a fire in a fireplaceor over a campfire, or roasted in an oven. Spits are generally used for cooking large joints of meat or entire animals like pigs, turkeys, goats or historically, entire cattle.

In Medieval and Early Modern kitchens, the spit was the prefered way of cooking meat in a large household. A servant, preferably a boy, sat near the spit turning the metal rod slowly and cooking the food (and himself to some extent); he was known as the Spit boy. More mechanical means were later invented, first moved by dog-powered treadmill then later mechanical clockwork mechanisms."

I was so pleased that i didnt have to have it, there was still meat there but i just mostly had salads and other non-dangerous foods.

Just FYI, I have been to many spit roasts and have never gotten ill. I usually get right in line as soon as it's ready and it's hot and fresh, so next time, if you grab some meat as soon as it's done, you should be fine. Get there early. That way you can still enjoy it without the worry!

Side note story - Thanksgiving 2004 my neighbor decided he was going to deep fry a turkey. I love deep fried turkey. However, he must have done it wrong, for it came out medium rare! Ugh! I avoided it and ate the other stuff (he was pretty understanding) but his teenage sons were picking the cooked meat off the bird right from around the raw parts! I never asked if anyone got sick after that, I don't thinkI wanted to know.
