I am scheduled to have surgery early next month and I am already in sheer panic mode! I am terrified that the anesthesia will make me v*! There are drugs out there that can help prevent that after surgery and I will ask the doc to give me one - but I'm afraid they won't take me seriously and will forget or something... I know it's paranoid. My other fear is not v* myself, but being put into a hospital room with someone else who is v* from the anesthesia and not being able to get up and get out of there! I am having abdominal surgery and won't be able to get up for a couple of days.Has anyone out there had a similar situation and had no n* or v* from the anesthesia?!!!

Hate feeling this way all the time..... between the surgery and winter, I'm a mess.

First of all, you will not vomit from the anesthesia. There will be no
contents in your stomach. The worst that will happen is you will feel
queasy. Some people gets queasy and some simply do not. Try not
to start panicking already. My hubby did get queasy from anesthesia
after surgery and said he was going to v* and asked me to get the
pan. I started screaming for a nurse(ok, it's funny now, but it wasn't
funny then). She came running in and said "humph! he's not going
to vomit, he hasn't had any food!. She was right. He never did.

A little bit of comfort...I was under anesthesia when I had my wisdom teeth puller, no v*, no n* at all afterwards. That was what I was most terrified about and it turned out fine. Let the doctor know that you are fearful about v* after the proceedure and they should be able to give you something like phenegren to help. I have taken that before and it relieved n* 100%. Don't be afraid to ask for what you need, you are having surgery and deserve to be comfortable after the proceedure.

I've been under anesthetic twice, and I never v*ed. I was reallyn* for a few minutes then it passed. That's why they tell you to fast for 12 or morehours before the surgery. I know how you feel though. I get so scared before surgery. I cry my eyes out, and everyone laughs at me because the don't understand how scared I am to v*. Good luck to you, I think you will be just fine!!

Thanks to everyone for your responses! I feel much better hearing from fellow emets who have been there. Most people would be more concerned about the pain management after a surgery - but that doesn't really botherme. I'll take loads of pain any day over being n* or v*!

I haven't posted very frequently here, but am really greatful that I found this site - feel like I'm not an outcast - and know there are people who will understand me.

Thanks again all - have a great day!!

I was pretty nauseous after my gallbladder surgery and I dry heaved a few times and fainted when I tried to stand. I never vomited though.

You need to talk with your doctor about your concerns for possibly experiencing nausea and V* following surgery. Talk ahead of time about the pain medications you will be taking (those often make you sicker than anything else). Talk about any preparations you can make the days leading up to the surgery to calm your stomach and nerves.

I do agree with what others have said about V* after surgery - it is unlikely because your stomach will be empty. You might dry heave or have some acid, but talk with your doctor about some meds you can take post-surgery if you are afraid of feeling this way.

You will get through this, but strong and detailed communication with your doctor about this will probably be your best bet for a less stressful surgery.

    Thanks Purpleteacher.

Things always sound more rational and logical when someone else puts them on the table for you. I have just scheduled my pre-op appointment with the doctor and will be sure to talk with her in detail about it. A friend told me last night that she had Zofran put directly into the IV before the surgery specifically for n* and had no problems at all! Haven't 'shared' the fact that I am emet with many (hubby and mom), but I think/hope the doctor has dealt with this sort of thing in the past and will take it into consideration.

After I have the pre-op and talk to the doctor about this concern - I'll be able to start worrying about the surgery!!

    Thanks again to all!

    marby,

I also explained at my pre-opthat I was very anxious about the surgery and that I needed to be laying down when they gave me the i.v. The hospital provided me with a sedative before the surgery which helped a lot.

The reason I think I felt so sick was that they put Demerol (a narcotic for pain) in my i.v. before I came to. I had a couple of Gravol shots to calm the nausea, but it was only sheer time that made me come around. As soon as I had metabolized all of the narcotic, I went home.

Hey Marby, I had anasthetic last year. Itold the anethetist I had a phobia and she promised to give me extra anit emetics. As soon as I came round I asked for more although I didn't feel ill at all and they gave them me no problem. You can practically get anti emets on tap there so trynot to worry.

I have seen many references on this site to Gravol. I don't believe it can be purchased over the counter is the US (not that I've been able to find). Is it comparible to Emetrol? I usually just rely on the old Phenegran, but have wondered about Gravol since so many people have talked about it...
